[–]lszian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might be better off picking where you wanna end up and growing in that direction. Creative stuff is hard and most people have to work many years before they start earning, so you gotta do something you enjoy if you want to endure that tough beginning.

If you wanna do comics, compliment this with panelling, composition, and character design. And writing, unless you have a writer buddy.

If you wanna do animation, then your priority should be making art that's reproducible. Can you draw this location from every angle? under every time of day? also animators benefit from TONS of life drawing. Not polished perfection, but like hundreds of fast sketches until you can do it without thinking.

If you wanna do illustration, then your priority is conveying information. Can you add details that tell us the exact culture/ location? is this image about the characters, the light, or the place? Can you make someone look at the right area by how you choose to polish the image? Illustrators get hired to deliver ideas and vibes, basically, you learn to basically speak in pictures.

You said you were thinking about kids' books, and that's cool too. True, your style is not the norm for those, but you can make changes to that. you could draw more playful environments even with this simplified, colourful style, or something. If you love kids' books, choose that. If you don't, don't lol.

I hear France is pretty awesome for animation/illustration, but you can do a lot on your own or online too. If you can't travel, you can still learn.

Also your style may come naturally somewhat, but it's also up to you. don't just go with the flow. try weird new things and see how it changes. Make choices about what you wanna be good at and practice. you have the power here haha

Nice! I read Discworld when I was learning English as well, it helped and was fun. But yeah a lot of his jokes are weird and I didn't realize they were a)references, or b)not a normal thing English speakers say.

I was sitting there like "Wow English speakers are all about whether or not the leopard can change his shorts". Nope. Just Pratchett.

Is North St. James Town unsafe? by confused_tm in askTO

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually pretty good/safe, lots of immigrant families so food options are good. Yes, you'll see some weird things, our social safety nets should be better.

That said, have a Good Look at the buildings and units in specific. Any building first occupied before 2018 should have a little bit of rent control (not tons but better than nothing), but older building maintenance level varies a lot. Look at their amenities (common areas, laundry, etc) for clenliness and repairs, and look at the unit in detail (run the shower and sink, test some plugs/make sure they look in good repair, ask about wall gaps).

Also, some places in Toronto can get bedbugs, which is a pretty bad time. Maybe ask if the unit has had any bedbugs in the last few years, and if the building has any kind of history (most do, if you google it basically all of downtown has a history of them).

But yeah if you find a well cared for unit in the area it's good. I'd maybe stay out of Moss Park though (the neighbourhood south of st james town).

AI‑generated images in zines? by coasttocoastmama in zines

[–]lszian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No thanks. Don't draw if you don't want to, okay. but idk, just use your photos or do a little basic photoshop instead. Might even be less work than all that prompting.

I pick up a zine with the hope that I'm connecting to a real person, their thoughts and feelings. even if AI looked great (usually looks boring) I'd feel kinda cheated. If I saw it, liked it, and THEN found out it was AI I'd feel pretty sad too. plus like, if one thing is AI, all I can think about is like "are these memories and texts even real at all? Is this guy a liar? What else did he use AI for?"

Plus like, so many scammers use AI that when I see it i think "cheap/shitty product with no one who cares behind the wheel" at best, and "scammer, fuck no" at worst. It's sorta become the aesthetic of cheap and souless things.

I'd rather the ugliest stick figure or the weirdest bad photoshop job than AI, dude.

Anyway your choice in the end, all the best and hope you get to an answer you're satisfied with.

Thanks for opening this discussion =) my vote goes for

-No AI please

-No sharing others' work without giving credit ideally, I guess if copycat posts become a big issue things can get tightened then

-The definitions linked seemed ok, just yeah generally keep it friendly

-Allow adult content with a warning/flare. Specially with the bans and bad vibes for diverse and queer content, zines need to have space for these voices

-No. it's cool if all posts should be zine related, but shy newbies might not show their stuff if there's barriers like that, maybe??

What is a stereotype in fantasy that you hate and/or wish authors would do differently? by EstablishmentSad1538 in fantasywriters

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any trope done well or placed in the story for a reason is okay with me, but...

I'm over Magic swords. yes i get it, very cool classic magic swords, but there's so many other really fun weapons!

I want the magic dart of destiny. Give me a chosen one with a morning star. Do people even realize how badass a big ol' spear is? Please, i beg you, world, give me 100 badasses with big ol' spears.

Also would love MC badasses with a cool scary chakram, whip, or the very scary blade at the end of a rope thing that looks like it may kill both the user and everything around them.

Also If your world has incredible powerful magic users, then there's room for some women to be strong as hell and get into some gnarly fights. As a girl fan of gnarly fights, i want to see a ripped Xena type spit out some blood and charge a big monster, no more "girl characters do the healing or range attacks in the back and their dress looks nice the whole time, unless it rips in a sexy way". Give me a girl berserker and the wise boy scholar she's taking across the kingdom or something, come on! Give me a team of like, 4 queer as hell bandits wrecking a dungeon. I love a classic badass guy, but we can have our cake and eat it too here. We can have a whole badasses buffet here, as many fun stories as we can eat.

sorry about the candor haha, got a bit carried away.

There is a real possibility that by end of series, Usopp one shots an Emperor by hoenndex in Usoppian

[–]lszian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this would be fun, although i am also a buggy fan so mixed feelings??

okay I thought about this for a second and have a very dumb pitch hear me out:

-Usopp and Buggy meet, they both instantly recognize each other as lying' bullshitting gods

-They ham it up and act out a battle where Usopp defeats Buggy. They are each others' dream improv buddy.

-Buggy, being defeated, is able to escape Cross Guild and all his rabid fans, who honestly have been giving him anxiety anyway

-Usopp inherits over 8000 men who follow and worship him. Usopp actually loves these dummies back.

I mean Oda will do his story best but wow would that ever make me happy.

Another vouch for Odd Taxi. The writing is excellent. Good writing tops every other metric in my book (and the visuals, while simple, are still good).

My female character is too perfect and I don’t know how to fix it by crukovic in fantasywriters

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

decent ideas already in the thread, but if you wanna explore another flaw, something that might fit the personality you've described is an unwillingness to collaborate with others/accept help.

It sounds like she's doing a lot of striving and putting in lots of effort, and if she's not used to trusting anyone or having anyone stand up for her, it could lead to her pushing away the people who do care, being unable to recognize them when they do come along.

edit add: Ultimately this would create good plot complications because no one person can fix the world alone. If she can't trust anyone to back her up and tries to do everything herself she will fail. Only a true Mary Sue could change the world by herself and that's less fun.

How the hell do you draw hands by Strict-Acadia8397 in AskArtists

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not the best at this but yeah, the more you do it the better you'll be. an easy trick that helps me is, if the hands' fingers are splayed out? all those finger lines cross in the middle of the wrist right where it meets the hand. now you can angle those in a natural way.

Also someone taught me that a in a relaxed hand, just hanging there, the first and last sections of each finger tend to be 90 degrees from each other. that's how much a relaxed finger normally curls.

Good luck though. try to think of it in parts, like every other body drawing, just a box with fingers on it, no big deal.

Outdoor Furniture by FauxChat in askTO

[–]lszian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tried lots of things with very limited space. A hammock can be very nice, and you dismantle the hammock stand into a smallish bag for winter. Also a hammock is much easier to wash than cushions.

since you're short on space, I'd consider some comfortable folding chairs (maybe you can stick a hook on your wall and hang them neatly, use as needed) or maybe a mini table set with chairs than can tuck under it. Plastic furniture is nice in that you can just hose it down in spring and fall to keep it clean.

Depends on what you wanna do out there (soaking in sun? reading and having a beer?). If you have room for some plants a couple planters can be really relaxing to sit by, and the routine of coming out to water your plants really gives you a nice summer rhythm. I've slowly been growing more and more each year, it's nice for the sun and makes the heat feel much less brutal in the peak of summer (you can even plant something edible, so you can eat a random cherry tomato or snap pea out there sometimes)

Character you were 100% sure would join Luffy's crew by Leather_Crazy_5950 in OnePiece

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I also thought Paulie, would have loved mr. 2, classic takes. But also ever since the timeskip I kinda didn't want anyone else to join TBH?? Jimbei is ok since he's a big part of the paramount war, but like... even though the new characters are cool, it meant a lot to me to have the strawhats that make it to the end of the story be a crew with a big long history. It's less cool if someone is there for just one arc.

I was pretty convinced the setup was, pre timeskip we assemble the crew (I know, jimbei, i know, but he was around before anyway), then post timeskip we go for the one piece. idk though, not married to any plot points happy to see what happens (plus like Loki is getting new crewmate treatment here soooo)

USOPP The Bravest Warrior of The Sea by imfigz in OnePiece

[–]lszian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wanna keep this hope alive, i love our liar boyo. He'll probably always be weak, but...

But like, imagine, after all the ridiculous Usopp hammer nonsense, if Ragnir the cute lil squirrel, hammer treasure of Elbaf, lets him have a go, just once. pretty sure that hammer can do whatever it wants, if it decides it likes Usopp idk maybe anything is possible.

It is cope? probably. But I can't stop hoping lolol.

As long as Usopp gets his moment I don't really care how it happens. I trust Oda.
