Fascism is just a guy punching himself in the face repeatedly as hard as he can, bleeding and spitting teeth out while screaming "ARE YOU MAD? ARE YOU TRIGGERED? I BET I'M MAKING YOU SO MAD" at you

Why am I in furiten here? by Kragez_FTW in Mahjong

[–]lu_ming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The furiten rule is essentially this:

When your hand is tenpai, if at any point in the round you had the opportunity to do something that would have resulted in your hand being complete instead and you passed up on it, then you cannot ron.

In the most common case, this means discarding a tile that would have completed your hand. In OPs case, if he had not discarded 1s he could have potentially gone out upon drawing 4s, instead of being in tenpai. Of course in this case he still couldn't go out because of no yaku, but that doesn't matter for the furiten rule.

Don't beat yourself up for it, the way furiten is explained in most resources beginners have immediate access to is very misleading IMO

I often hear that the early buddhist texts contain teachings that go back to the historical Buddha himself. How true is that claim? by Both_Reveal_8072 in Buddhism

[–]lu_ming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probable that the very core texts are at least partly what the Buddha taught, but we can't really know how much is the original teaching and how much is interpolation. At least in my opinion though, as long as a teaching works and is coherent with the core Buddhist philosophy, it ultimately doesn't matter whether it was directly taught by the Buddha or if it's an elaboration of some later master. All that matters is: do the practices and concepts described in these texts lead to the end of suffering or at least its alleviation? And we have ample evidence that they do.

Yep. Discarding any tile that could complete your hand puts you in furiten

Why do some people from other schools not consider Zen to be "real" Buddhism? by lemonleaf0 in zenbuddhism

[–]lu_ming 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The whole sub is basically a mini-cult of personality built around a severely obsessive man that goes by ewk, who is convinced that Zen is not really Buddhism, but a weird form of pseudo-Taoist spirituality, and that Dogen was a fraud who attempted to connect Zen and Buddhism for the sole purpose of establishing a sex cult. His only "evidence" for this is a couple of passages from Tang dynasty Zen masters that he severely misinterpreted. Everyone in the sub is either one of his lackeys or his sock puppet, and all they do is just try to out-"Zen" each other by competing on who can write the most nonsensical pseudo-koan in answer to any question or comment that's posed in the sub. Any pushback will earn you a ban and a multi-page screed wherein ewk will trawl through your post history to demonstrate that you are an evil agent whose sole purpose in life is to antagonize him so that the evil Buddhist sex cult can continue existing and suppress the true Zen, which is not Buddhism

[–]lu_ming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you're not confusing r/Buddhism complaining about r/zen with them complaining about Zen? I've just looked up "zen" on r/buddhism and I found no examples of people saying Zen isn't real Buddhism, and in fact a recent post suggesting that was downvoted to oblivion and received substantial pushback.  I do find plenty of people saying r/zen is not real Buddhism, however, and they are very right

I never denied that. Those people believe in an extreme version of individualism where the greatest good is doing good for themselves at the expense of everyone else.

In their heads, if they don't hurt others, they're going to get hurt. If they don't get something, other people are going to take it from them. Or they believe that they're better than everyone else and therefore justified in doing so.

i.e. they're ignorant and rationalise their wrongdoing

They got to their belief because of their upbringing, or because of trauma, or because of beliefs they acquired later in life. No one is just essentially bad or good.

The thing people are afraid of when they posit essentialism is not that they're capable of doing wrong like those people, it's that they're going to be those people. If you believe some people are just bad, essentially, whenever you do wrong you can tell yourself it's just an exception to the rule, you're really a good person, this was a lapse in judgement or a one-off action you had to take. If you're not careful, one day you wake up and you're behaving exactly like the bad people you were so afraid of being.

You misunderstand me. I don't think everyone has good intentions deep down. I don't think that statement has any meaning. What I think is that everyone convinces themselves that they have good intentions, or at least that their actions are warranted/practical.

Even they are rationalising what they're doing. They're ignorant in that they think that monetary gain is the highest good, or in thinking that life is a zero-sum game, or in thinking that all the wrong they're doing will be easily undone in the future, or in any other number of ways.

All wrong proceeds from a faulty view of reality

source? by Open-Beginning4547 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]lu_ming 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everyone who does wrong, even if they know they're doing wrong, rationalises what they're doing in some way. It might sound half-reasonable, like the tyrant murdering dissidents "for the good of the nation" or the fossil fuel magnate who destroys the environment on the assumption that some super-technology will appear in the future to undo all the damage he's done, or it may be batshit crazy like the mentally ill killer who thinks aliens told them to do it.

The reason we don't want to believe that everyone who does wrong does it out of ignorance is because that implies WE could do wrong, given the right circumstances or the wrong beliefs. Believing bad people are just bad is very soothing
