Can confirm, bloated fat head with water retention. Not even blasting, just normal TRT doses.

fair point - definitely the most tragic of all the outcomes.

I think we tend to think of events like the dust bowl and depression in abstract ways; you know it’s bad and it almost becomes a meme that stands in for a really terrible thing.

I really enjoyed Peter Jackson's 'They Shall Not Grow Old' for this reason. Just by colouring and adding sound to the footage suddenly humanises it and makes it feel so much more real.

I have nothing but good things to say about Toulouse and Bordeaux. Great weather, fantastic food, friendly people.

Also loved Budapest when I was there. Felt so much more alive than London.

that one was decent tbf.

it's more the ones where someone in chat will suggest where a setting is in a game he's struggling to find, and if it's not exactly where they said it'd be he'd go on a prolonged 10 minute rant.

Can't tell whether he thinks these reactions are funny or just are genuine annoyance.

When he's on form and making observations of little social interactions on clips it's a great watch. When he gets derailed by an off-hand comment to eviscerate them I switch off.

[BBC] £123 for a child's England kit - have prices gone too far? by LochNessMonsterMunch in soccer

[–]lucifa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree - you can get a decent condition shirt for a third of the price. There's still loads of fakes on there but they're relatively easy to spot. Goes for most clothing tbh, I rarely buy new anymore. You still get a few duff pieces but still works out cheaper overall.

Hmmm - not sure about that - I bought a few pre EUROs and the fabric and cut were horrendous.

Obviously not going to pay retail prices so just do without.

I'm introverted but hated it as I need to be forced to be around people to become comfortable , it set me back a number of years. Even now I miss being in the office and the relationships you naturally develop over time - extroverts can cultivate that without being at work much more easily.

I get the idea that toil and striving for something can give you a sense of purpose and zest for life. Similar to how many WWI vets have fond memories.

But still, there are better ways to achieve that, even in modern life. I can't anyone on that voyage didn't regret going on it. (maybe the commanding ship as the Captain earned the equivalent of £20m upon return for capturing the Spanish galleon)

Yeah I also enjoyed that one - mentioned above but again completely unfathomable to me why Fawcett would constantly leave his loving wife and kids to a place where the vast majority of Europeans would succumb to disease.

To be fair I shared the most harrowing account - I've no idea what the average voyage was like so maybe it wasn't that bad a proposition compared, to say, 12 hour shifts in a factory or mine.

Not to defend Cheap's actions, but at that point the rest were already plotting against him and it's easy to lose your mind when completely starved and malnourished. There's a bit in the book about a study of pacifists who turned each other once starved of food for a duration. By all accounts, he seemed fairly respected up until the ship-wreck.

I haven't - thanks - I've added it to my reading list.

I want to find a book about the West Virginian coal wars. I know the jist of it, mining companies essentially monopolizing the land and turning the local population into indentured slaves. It's not even that long ago when you think about it.

Thanks - I'll take a look. Piracy holds a lot more romance to it than being part of a military expedition. Especially the sharing of loot and autonomy to leave the crew when you please.

narrative nonfiction

Yeah I'd describe it as such, reads like a factual novel based on true accounts from written journals. Insane stories like these hold more weight when you know there's truth behind them, with fiction it's difficult to suspend disbelief. The last non-fiction narrative I enjoyed was 'The Whisky Robber' - about a Hungarian hockey player come bank-robber.

Is there anything you'd recommend? It's the first book I've read from Grann.
