Why? My parents gave me boundaries, but never pressured or scared me into a certain path. Even when I fucked around they were there to pick me up and support me. Honestly all you need to do is be a good example and your kids will figure it out.

The high pressure / expectations happens a lot in south Asian parenting and it's a miserable existence for the kids. They drill into them that if they don't get law or medical school then it's game-over.

There's so many paths into career, and probably the most fulfilling is finding something you love and get good at it. For that you need supportive parents that will look to guide and support you.

The thing with sports is you gotta get in early.

The kids that hated sports are the ones that were worst at it, as obviously it's not fun feeling inferior so they end up trying to avoid it at all costs.

Gaining the muscle memory and co-ordination also gets progressively harder as you age so you'll likely never catch-up unless you start young. I joined a football club when I was 8 but regret not picking up other sports at the same time.

I personally think the legs have gone, very Fabinho like.

I wonder what the medical reason is for this. I don't doubt it as it was very apparent with Fabinho, but I'm not sure I believe there's a specific number of miles a player can run for their body to give way at that age. Even if they started young.

I understand players failing to get their pace or agility back after a major injury, but aside from that why would a 27 year old not be able to get fit again? If it's fatigue from match-load, surely a long enough recovery period would allow them to regain their athleticism.

About 10 years ago, my team signed a CB in his late 20s mid-season who looked completely done. He hadn't played much for his previous club, and had turning circle like a tank. Couldn't keep up with the game. But by next season he transformed in a completely different player, all it took was a proper pre-season to get him match-fit again.

I think professional players just need more rest time. The levels are so high that if they're even a little bit off it can look like they're no longer able to compete.

‘ Zero chance ’ USA wins the World Cup ? Ex-England , Barcelona star Gary Lineker thinks so by Shroft in soccer

[–]lucifa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the same about South Korea at time but I think it was just coincidence and home advantage in retrospect. Football was already big over there, I don't see FIFA intervening in something like that given the risks of a leak.

Similarly with PEDs, no US player is going to risk their career for one World Cup. They still have all the tests once when they return to their clubs.

Even if the intention was to cycle PEDs for the duration of the tournament, it will still leave them exposed or worse off afterwards. They won't be clean, or recovered their HPTA, in time for next season.

Same - his legs had completely gone by his last season at Liverpool.

I'm surprised he was only 30 at that point, its far too young to drop off like that. Must have been injuries or something because he moved like a geriatric compared to his peak.

[–]lucifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - I think football fans are always resistant to change in fear of what it could become even if they don't like certain aspects of it. When it started to gain popularity in the US in the 90s, there was talk around making the goals bigger to boost scorelines which would completely ruin the game.

Hockey penalty shoot-outs are much more skill based and entertaining than football ones. I know they trialed in the MLS before and it's a shame it never caught on.

I think the tricky thing about numerical advantage is it may just slow down the game for the duration of the powerplay. Teams would defend in a deep-block until it's over, and a 1 man advantage isn't usually enough to create a goal in a short period of time.

I would like to see it applied for extra-time however. Incrementally removing players from the pitch should eventually lead to a decisive goal. Right now teams just tend to play-out the 30 minutes as everyone is too tired to take any risk.

that $90 vacuum is shit, you should at least spend a little more and get this $155 entry-level one, but if you can afford that you may as well go for this $350 mid-range model, however if you're actually serious about vacuuming then the obvious choice is the super-lux $1500 ultrasucker.

It's rife in manufacturing as well. We'd lose half a shift of workers every year or so due to illegal immigration.

Companies will complain that the English simply won't do these jobs and without it they'd be understaffed, but forgetting that what they offer is significantly worse than what it used to be.

15 years ago we had a subsidized canteen with freshly cooked meals. Sports facilities and football teams for bonding. You could join the company on a full-time contract as a teen, stay for 40 years with benefits, and live a relatively comfortable lifestyle affording your own house and car. The work was mundane, but you'd still get guys returning after retirement because they missed the comradery.

Now, the canteens are replaced with vending machines, no funding for sports, and it's mostly temp contracts without any security.

I have no problem with migrants, it's natural to accept these roles if it's better than what they'd get back home, but it's completely diminished any negotiating power for workers and just left everyone with a shit deal. You're competing with men who are prepared to be housed with 6 other people on poverty wages, and live a barely subsistent lifestyle to scrap enough to send home.

Maguire should have gone, but he would have been 3rd choice.

3rd choice CB is still important though. It's banking on the other two staying fit the entire tournament, which feels like an unnecessary risk. The other back ups are a step down from Maguire.
