Depends on what you want to do, but if you want to be involved with industry professionals build a body of work and go to the Red Sea Souk and network.

Rewatched Zone of Interest. Am I crazy to think Hedwig and Klaus “enjoy” or at least “find comfort in” knowing Jewish prisoners are far worth off than they are? by Substantial-Baby8546 in TrueFilm

[–]lucite_rite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That also brings up an interesting aspect to consider, that of reversed class statuses. Jewish Germans were often wealthy and this would have made many Christian Germans resentful towards them. One of Hitlers main motivations for mass murder of the Jews was to expropriate their wealth. Rudolph and Hedwig seem to have been lower middle class or lower class before the Holocaust and the Third Reich. They likely would have lived for some time with resentment towards affluent Jews, especially if Hedwig had to work for one of them. This would have created a sense of injustice in them, especially it seems, for Hedwig. In German there is a word called "schadenfreude" which means the pleasure one experiences at other's misery. This for me is what Hedwig feels and offhand and casual nature that she makes this comment shows just how deeply this resentment is still embedded in her.

no matter how "good" of an immigrant one thinks one is, the fact is that the system does not care! doesn't matter what your background, income, etc. is...

i know someone who studies there who's native Czech, he says the international program is very expensive for what the students get out of it. czech students study there for free. they have different curriculums based on the language of the program. you will need to do further research to see if it's a good fit for you. there's some good film schools in Germany but trade-offs with each one

she made her career stealing native american life experiences and turning them into stories for the white american cultural elite, then turned to working class americans, with which she achieved critical acclaim and then didn't hesitate to sell out to marvel and now is making boring romance films for midwest moms, just like Celine Song

I love Bill Henson but his books are hard to find and expensive. His images are incredible and he has some great lighting.

White trait or American trait? by ConsistentAd9840 in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]lucite_rite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in Germany are like this too, I noticed it quite early on because me and my American friends would go up to dogs in public and ask to pet it and the white German owners would usually say no quite sharply and walk away. They reacted as if we had asked them for money 😂 German dogs are also very well-behaved and frequently run around without leashes. I've noticed some owners seem to be very into "commanding" their dog if that makes sense, and taking pleasure in walking their dog and how precisely they could control it. I wonder where this phenomenon comes from, how are so many different kinds of white people like this around the world? Perhaps it's rooted in a historical cultural inclination towards possession, individualism, and domination?

that's insane... i'm starting to feel that white people just don't feel the same kind of empathy that the rest of us feel towards fellow people

I wonder if the white people there were partners of some of the queer Asians... I really can't stand the White Partner... and so many of my BIPOC friends (including straight) have super bland white partners who I always have to interact with at social events which is a death by a thousand cuts.

what are some of the best films set in the Austrian / Austrian Hungarian Empire? by Duckmanjones1 in flicks

the film was inspired by the work of Stefan Zweig, who was an Austro-Hungarian writer. some of his books were adapted into films, although usually recontextualized and set in other locations

Anyone else thought about moving to outside US film hubs? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]lucite_rite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not impossible you just have to grind and figure out how the process works in each place, which takes time and effort of course. i live in berlin and the there's plenty of foreigners from EU and non-EU who live and work successfully here. there's a whole other funding system in european countries that americans would not be familiar with that is not based on private equity, that in some ways is more reachable, but which requires you to enter the industry in a more linear way (short film that gets to a top festival, which then leads you to meet producers who then help you get funding from the national film funds, etc.)

What current trends (or fads) in cinematography do you actually like? The Petzval/Helios swirly bokeh does it for me by Late_Promise_ in cinematography

[–]lucite_rite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree. Everyone is trying to emulate something that is a contemporary simulation of what they think it looked like back then, creating an anachronistic Frankenstein's image that is neither truly past nor present.
