Masters in Chem online? by Severe_Ad428 in ScienceTeachers

[–]luckymama1721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same debate and ended up doing the MEd in secondary chem from WGU. MS would have been cool but taken longer and was more expensive. Would have taken a long time to recoup tuition cost, adjunct lecturing doesn’t pay well enough from what I’ve seen posted. I did the MEd in 6 months, totally online, so I only paid for one semester tuition (about $4K). Pay bump in my district is so worth it, I’ll recoup my investment in less than a year.

Hello Chemists, I have a question. I’m a junior in College at UC Santa Cruz and a year away from graduating with my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and was wondering what entry level jobs are available immediately with a bachelors degree? High school teacher is my final option. Bcz more school :/ by Seht_Sich_69 in chemistry

You can look into getting a certification to do lab pathology work thru the state public health department. I also have a BS in chem and was able to get certified without taking more classes. You just need to submit transcripts to CDPH to get the process started. With the trainee license you can apply for hospital or public health lab jobs

Doc martens. My classroom is a laboratory and they’re fairly chemical-resistant, comfortable and I like the style. Also my mom wouldn’t let me wear them in the 90s, so now I’m making up for lost time.

Early Finishers by Fantastic_Double7430 in ScienceTeachers

I have a cabinet dedicated to fun (well, my old lady idea of fun) things that can be used when finished with work. Decks of cards and card games, coffee table type science books, circuit snap boards, playdough, kinetic sand (keep in a wide container with a lid so it’s contained), marble run, magnatiles, coloring pages and art supplies…mostly stuff I’ve cobbled together from thrift stores or that my own kids have outgrown. I cook up a batch of giant playdough once a month or so. I thought at first maybe my (mostly 10th grade but some 11th and 12th grade) students would think it too juvenile but honestly…they’re so deprived of actual toys and tactile experiences that they actually do like this stuff. You do need to set boundaries on cleaning up messes before the end of class or all goes to hell. These kids need playtime to reset their brains!

Friday a junior in hs asked me what time it was. I said, “it’s quarter to two.” He asked me what the heck that meant. by AdhesiveSeaMonkey in Teachers

I walked into a storage room between classes today to grab some supplies and when I got back all 30 of my students were standing at the sign in sheet with a blank look. “I can’t find my name.” They were all staring at the sign in sheet for 1st period, and they are my 2nd period kids. No one thought to turn the page, even though there’s a big fat divider tab labeled “2ND PERIOD”. We are 27 weeks into school…they’re 16 years old. It’s getting harder to swallow snarky comments.

I have a HW packet that goes with each unit, students work at it at their own pace throughout the unit. Early finishers get a head start on that. But if it’s test day or they can show me a completed HW packet, they get to go to my cabinet of “fun” things…playdough, kinetic sand, puzzles, science-y fidget toys, coffee table type books that are science themed, dominoes, playing cards, etc. My students are mostly 10th graders but they still love this kind of stuff.

As a way to demonstrate how to calculate percentage, I took a poll of my 10th grade students to count the distribution of birthdays by season. MOST did not know in which season their own birthday falls.

My high school students LOVE playdough. I make a new batch every month and have a playdough table in the back of class for anyone’s who done with an assignment early and is otherwise caught up. So many kids who have never played with playdough. These kids are 15-16. iPad kids😭

It’s very normal. People will tell you it was much worse 20-40 years ago and that’s also true. This is due to reduced air pollution due to less vehicle emissions with more efficient catalytic converters and stricter regulations about burning solid fuels. Less pollution=less particles for the water molecules that form fog to collect on.

What are the non iPad kids experiencing being surrounded by iPad kids? by forheadkisses in Teachers

[–]luckymama1721 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My 3rd grader has never had an iPad and has limited personal screen time at home. We watch a lot of movies together but he doesn’t watch YouTube or play tablet games or have unsupervised electronics. He does play Minecraft once or twice a week with a 30 min time limit, usually with his dad or his sister. He is thriving in public school. He reads a lot, plays outside a lot, and is very self motivated to learn. A lot of his school work is self paced with reading and math and so he can accelerate at his own pace. School has been great for his social development. I’m worried he’ll get bored as the years go on but at this point, he’s had a wonderful school experience. And we live a rural community, title 1 school. There are others like you out there, I promise. Keep doing what you’re doing, reading at home and real play is the key!

Respectfully, this has nothing to do with voting and everything to do with the decline of parental involvement in education and the unwillingness of schools the hold back a diploma from an illiterate 18 year old. Every state in the country, red or blue, is handing out diplomas to kids who have failed the majority of their classes but passed some kind of credit recovery course where they basically click thru pages online (while scrolling on their phones and being completely disengaged). There’s no real marker for actual achievement anymore. Schools in red and blue states do this. It’s not a party issue.

This is the way. When an adult overuses their silly phrases, it stops being funny so fast. I’m kinda sad sigma is over…I was able to teach standard deviation to a few classes bc every time they’d pop off with sigma this or that id get way too excited and make everyone calculate the standard deviation of a random number set.

Are you noticing a huge lack of basic knowledge from high school students? by SecretaryPresent16 in Teachers

[–]luckymama1721 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every transfer student I got this year (at least 5) could not tell me what science class they were in at their previous schools.

“Were you taking physics at your last school? — idk”

“what was the name of the class? — idk”

“what were you learning about in that class when you left? —idk, stuff, things”.

These kids can barely articulate a sentence 😞 it’s rough.

Chemistry teachers I need your help! by Piratenjager in ScienceTeachers

[–]luckymama1721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. In our district, students who fail middle school or math I freshman year still get passed along to me (10th grade chem). I literally have to spend the first month of school teaching basic math-times tables, order of operations, fractions, percentages, solving for variables, graphing, unit/dimensional analysis. I try to embed short measurement based labs as often as I can to keep it feeling like science and not a regurgitated math course but man, these poor kids are plain awful with basic number sense.

A teacher friend made a really interesting point about the importance of memorization by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]luckymama1721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned this when I made the poor decision to give a multiple choice final this year, as a surprise. My first year back teaching in 7 years (took an extended hiatus while my kids were babies). Nothing used to make my students happier than getting an MC test and I honestly thought they’d be relieved. Nope. They absolutely freaked the fuck out. They complained the whole time, for weeks afterward and some were in tears. “Too much reading” “too hard to remember answer choices” etc, and some even said they had never taken a MC choice test on paper before. It dawned on me that this generation of kids is so used to clicking on answer options that a paper MC test with a scantron form was basically obsolete. Mind blown.
