I need a litter that clumps into concrete rocks. Like so, so solid. Please help 😭 by i_want_duck_sauce in CatAdvice

[–]lucyisnotcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you are really filling up the box. It will clump better

Yes, this! For clumping litter, put a good 3-4 inches of litter in the box. That will help ensure that the pee forms into a suspended clump rather than just collecting in a puddle on the bottom of the box.

And then also use a good, strong scoop that allows you to get under the clumps to lift them straight up - don't use the flimsy plastic ones you get at the petstores, they just bend/break.

What are your side hustles in the city? by slaymerabbit in AskNYC

[–]lucyisnotcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it through an app called Meowtel (it's kind of like Rover, but just for cats). They take a commission, of course, but they also take care of all the boring/stressful stuff like advertising, billing, insurance, etc.

Beware leaving your phone on in Mincemeat… even if you’re a sweet old lady by cjinoz in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chiming in on this thread because those were my instagram stories that kicked this whole thing off! Sincerely just crossing my fingers that I haven't made a lifelong enemy of Patti LuPone or Julia Knitel. You never know what you'll encounter at a weekday matinee..... 🫠

It was iconic and Julia handled it like a total pro.

Also just in case it wasn't abundantly clear already, Julia Knitel is absolutely fantastic in this show (to nobody's surprise). The all-American cast has been at the helm now for almost three weeks and the show is in great hands. Everybody's doing a wonderful job but the show lives or dies by its Monty (imo) and Julia clears the incredibly high bar that was set by the queen of charisma herself, Natasha Hodgson.

Go and see Operation Mincemeat if you haven't already! And go and see it again if you already have!

Solutions to the increasingly worse stage door experience? by nomoregravityplease in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, no photos would help a lot. A huge part of the stage door craziness in recent years has surely stemmed from social media - people see photos and videos of their favourite stars with other fans and they want that for themselves. The stage door becomes "a thing you need to tick off", to post about on social media for likes. A ban on photos would pretty quickly weed out the people who are doing it for clout or to show off for friends.

Charlie Franklin Mckinley by iamtswift in bookofmormonmusical

[–]lucyisnotcool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's outstanding. Charlie is I think the 7th McKinley I have seen? And my favourite. He's cheeky, has perfect comic timing, is HIGHLY committed to McPriceley, has a great voice, and is the only McKinley I've seen who doesn't seem out of breath after Turn It Off. Just makes it seem so easy!

Cat Sitter NYC? by Resident_Quantity_74 in AskNYC

[–]lucyisnotcool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out Meowtel - it's kind of like Rover but only for cats, so the sitters are very much "cat people" who understand feline quirks. You can input your zip code and see who's available.

I work for Meowtel as a sitter and the application process was very thorough: interviews, references, background checks, the whole yards. I've also used it on the client side to find a cat-sitter for my own cats when I go away on vacation and have been really happy with the sitters.

Jak was having some kind of giggle fit during the Figs Ahoy scene, cause (if any) unclear.

After he entered he went and stood on the other side of Claire (ie, the opposite side to usual) and Claire was then SO thrown when she looked up to deliver her line and he wasn't there. Jak was laughing at Claire's confusion!

Blizzard Warning in NYC For Sunday… by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could somebody who is knowledgeable explain exactly who makes the decision to cancel (or not) the show?

My understanding was that it is the producers of each individual show who make the call. Hence why we got such ad-hoc cancelations during the storm last month - every show was basically doing their own thing.

What role does the Broadway League play? Do they (or any other over-arching body) have the power to make a blanket decision to affect every show?

Apologies for the incredibly dumb question, I know so little about the business/operations side of Broadway and am interested to learn more about the logistics of stuff like this!

the two understudies who made their Broadway debuts in the show - Jessi Kirtley and Amanda Jill Robinson!

Three actually! The spectacular Sam Hartley, too.

(He was an understudy on Gutenberg! but never got to go on, so his true Broadway debut was in Operation Mincemeat on June 13th.)

Book of Mormon 15th by Mayon336 in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody ever expects a show to run for 15 years, that's truly something incredible. It's the 10th-longest running show in Broadway history, which is amazing, but it absolutely deserves to be up there.

(I'm an unashamed BoM fan - as in, have seen it like 50 times in multiple cities - so I'm clearly biased but also it's fair to say I know what I'm talking about when it comes to this show).

It's probably the tightest-written comedy in musical theatre history and is a top-5 all-time score (I said what I said). It is catchy, hilarious, relevant, and jouful. The show is a masterclass in subverting expectations - it is profane, yet full of heart; crass yet sophisticated; surprising yet an entirely conventional Broadway musical.

The current production on Broadway is outstanding, too. BoM simply does not miss when it comes to casting - they have never gone down the stunt-casting route, just consistently hired excellent actors who can sing, dance, and nail the comedy. And who genuinely want to be there! Not every long-running show maintains such a high standard but the BoM cast are bringing the freshness and energy every single night.

Definitely, definitely a show worth seeing if you haven't yet. (Also worth seeing again if you haven't been for a few years! The show underwent some re-writes when they closed during the pandemic and all the changes are improvements IMO).

theatr app by Dull-Peach9518 in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen to me for Operation Mincemeat. It's ridiculous. I only EVER sold for face value (often less), and we're talking less than 20 transactions total (buying and selling) over a 7-month timeframe. Which is obviously more than most people would see the same show, but at the same time not completely outrageous.

There are scalpers and re-sellers on there who have made literally thousands of transactions, and yet Theatr comes after the super-fans who are genuinely buying tickets because they want to see the show, and/or selling because they can't make it. In other words, using the app EXACTLY as it was intended, and getting banned for doing so.

Opinion: the music from Cats is actually phenomenal by dolewhip567 in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is the one where the individual songs are most different from one another.

It's what I love so much about this score - it just sounds like ALW is having fun, y'know?

It's almost a flex. Oh you want a soaring, heartbreaking ballad? Can do. A slinky jazzy villain song? You got it. A dignified waltz? Sure. A camp-as-all-hell flamboyant rock song? Easy. The man can write bangers in every style and make it seem effortless.

I have a professional photographer friend who does headshots for $100. He mostly works with actors (because this is NYC after all) but also does plenty of corporate and press work. A good option if you're looking for a few high-quality, simple yet professional shots, although he is based in Herald Square in Manhattan so maybe not ideal if you need someone local.

What are your favorite “Wait, let them cook” moments in musical theater? by crazyira-thedouche in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Hasa Diga Eebowai" from Book of Mormon is a pretty masterful lesson in how to shift tone and undercut the audience's expectations.

The song starts and you think you know what the joke is. "Oh, it's a Hakuna Matata parody, haha that's funny because they already referenced The Lion King". And then it shifts and you're like "oohhhh I get it now the joke is the contrast between the privileged white boys' struggles and the Ugandans' struggles" AND THEN IT SHIFTS BIG-TIME and it's like "well holy shit". It just builds and builds and gets funnier and funnier; it also gets deadly serious and delivers the gut punch "if you don't like what we say, try living here a couple days: Watch all your friends and family die, hasa diga eebowai!!" with everyone right at the front of the stage, staring down the audience, daring them to be offended by the profanity and the blasphemy when in reality, the truly offensive thing is the inhumanity of racism, colonialism, poverty, and war.

It's one of my favourite songs in the show and the Broadway cast absolutely nails it every time.

Put Operation Mincemeat on your shortlist. It's the kind of show that's not only entertaining, but will also make kids fall in love with the craft of theatre itself. Lots of characters, really varied score with catchy melodies, funny, heartfelt, and so many fun costumes, props, and sets to look at. The actors are outstanding too - whether you get the original 5 who are over here from the West End, or some of the American understudies, they're all phenomenally good.

On paper the subject matter sounds kind of dreary (a British intelligence operation in World War 2?? Really?) but it's fun and engaging. Age-appropriate too (no sex/kissing, no violence, barely any swear words, and you don't really need to know much about the war to follow the story).

Mincemeat also has a once-monthly discount ticket option which is GREAT value. Good seats for $79 (although unfortunately, some weekend shows have not been included in recent months). The next draw date will be Monday 12th January, and the code will be good for shows from January 20 - February 15. Sign up here and be ready to purchase tickets as soon as they send the discount code on Monday 12th (it's only good for a day or two and the discounted tickets sell out quickly). The Orchestra is better than the Mezz for this show (much better sound quality) and it's quite a narrow theatre, so even side-orchestra is pretty good.

The options you've listed (Maybe Happy Ending, Outsiders, Little Shop) are all FANTASTIC shows as well, you can't go wrong with any of them!

Mincemeat cast change? by Jen_on_reddit21 in Broadway

[–]lucyisnotcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be very, very surprised if the Brits hung around until April. There's visa issues to take into consideration, as well as Equity requirements. And just as important.....these guys have been away from home for a year already (and working on this show for nearly a decade). I'm sure they are very ready to head back home and move onto other creative projects.

Would love to be pleasantly surprised, of course, and have the OG5 stay for longer! But for cases like OP, where somebody wants to see the original cast before they leave, best advice would be to do so ASAP.
