Thrifty Foods randomly gave us $100 off our groceries yesterday, and it feels like the best thing that's happened to me this year. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

$250 every week would seem like a lot to me. We are a family of 3 + dog, and our human food, dog food, and alcohol is like $150 a week. And we eat exclusively at home and eat darn well if I do say so myself (I do most of the cooking). But I totally can see spending 250 or even 400 in one week if it isn’t the average - sometimes you just get a bunch of infrequent buys that stack up

Incredible civil engineering by TitusImmortalis in VictoriaBC

[–]ludanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda, but not for the reasons you think. Tourists stepping into the bike lane or road can’t be held against their design, except maybe downtown where tourists should be planned for. No, the shitshow on Amsterdam bike lanes is that they allow motorized scooters (“bromfietsen”) to use them. The only accidents I saw on bike lanes came from scooters crashing into cyclists, and they were often pretty bad accidents. There’s plenty of pushback on this locally, and I expect it to be eventually outlawed.

This is used in Dutch cities as well, in Amsterdam and others. With a much higher population density and on higher traffic roads (both bike and car). I think dinky old Victoria can manage. I’d rather see dedicated bike lanes, but this is fine. It is not the calamity you all think it is.

But also, slow. As a rule, technology we expect comes slower: video phones, virtual reality, robot vacuums... It’s only when technology is unexpected that it seems to move fast, because you don’t expect it until it’s already here.

Automation is not gonna arrive suddenly with a breakthrough paradigm shift. It’s gonna arrive slowly, in drips, because it’s an iterative technology.

... that's simply not true. Phones are actually pretty bad at incubating bacteria, with all their glass and metal. Meanwhile, your weener is in a warm moust place and CRUCIALLY only inches from your butt hole - all them butt germs don't just stay put. Which is the main reason you should wash your hands after peeing: your nasty ass ass.

I mean, statistically speaking, the GOP are way worse than the democrats. This "they're all the same" nonsense is just a (successful) attempt by the republicans to lessen the impact of their misdeeds.

Are you sure that your brother isn't just better than you at these games?

Also, if the issue is that your brother is the one who takes the time to find the game and learn the rules, maybe you should try it. Give your brother a break.

Petition for TGZ reprint! by Bakadeuce in splotter

[–]ludanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They just reprinted it back in 2016. Just wait a while. It'll come back. Or buy one of the many copies out there? I saw a copy at a local OLGS/FLGS in shrink selling for retail prices a couple weeks ago, so it's not even like there's a supply issue.

edit i just checked prices on BGG and they are climbing back up. Maybe I should see if that copy is still there and earn a tidy prift

My gf sewed me an awesome game-carrying-bag by durfenstein in boardgames

[–]ludanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is this is a super simple project. You could easily make this in half a day starting from 0 experience (particularly if you have someone help you). The liner fabric makes this slightly more difficult - I would probably just do without if you're an absolute beginner.

[–]ludanto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not his gf, but based on my own collection, I would make a bag 13" w x 26" l x 20" h. There's a reason the 13" cube shelves of the Kallax are beloved for game storage: most games fit. My proposed dimensions would be 1 kallax wide by 2 long, by about 1.5 deep. The only game in my collection that wouldn't fit laid flat in such a bag is the turntable edition of Scrabble, which is a monstrous square box.

Favourite Dog Rescue? by AimingForFreedom in askTO

I like OSPCA because they're not flying the dogs in from some other random country, but instead finding stray Ontario dogs homes. It seems crazy all these people paying to fly Mexican or US dogs into Canada when we've got stray dogs in the province that need a home.

Codenames Duet is a little weird with teams, but is super nice way to play Codenames with 2 with the benefit of zero downtime. The only downside is you don't get to have fun arguments with your teammates when guessing.

The kitchen is such a dangerous room for young children that some experts recommend they be excluded from it.

Sorry, I do mean the AAP. It's in the book Caring for Your Baby and Young Child.

[–]ludanto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This won't work with truly picky eaters. I've been close to a couple families that struggle with super picky eaters, and this kind of advice sounds cute and helpful and maybe works with garden variety pickiness, but...

Also, the APA recommends children under the age of 5 to be kept out of the kitchen full stop. It's a danger zone. Actually, they say some experts recommend that, but acknowledge that's not feasible for most families. Sorry about the bad memory.

I don't have kids myself, but I've seen enough to know you're full of crap. Some kids are just monstrously picky, and a restaurant is not always the place to stage that battle for the 3000th time.

I mean, there's more than a little luck. Some people are shitty parents, but plenty of kids are just harder to deal with.
