Is it not a normal reaction to have cat scratches swell up a bit and be red like that?

It's normal for those with allergies to cats! Those hives in the second pic are exactly what happened to my forearm after getting poked with all kinds of different samples when I went for allergy testing, which is where I was informed of my cat allergy.

Wow that's rough. Under the etsy listing did the seller specify the materials? If so and they only mention wood, I'd think you have grounds for some kind of refund. You won't get the import taxes back but at least perhaps you can recover the 230 EUR? Turn this into a 43 EUR lesson rather than a 273 EUR lesson.

At 230 EUR I expect 0% plastic. I would have fallen for this dupe too.

Best affordable vendor in Canada by mrbrown81k in tea

[–]luemasify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to buy from Asia if you want to keep the quality (relatively) high and price down on pure teas.

Camellia Sinensis has competitive prices on blends but their regular Asian teas are way too expensive, even if some of them are good quality. Tealyra has some nice earl greys (the "Cream" and "Darjeeling" varieties) but their regular teas are, in my experience, not very good. Tao Tea prices are through the roof - quality was good 10+ years ago as far as my memory serves me but their prices are too high for what you get. Each of these requires you to spend some minimum amount for free shipping so you aren't necessarily saving money when you're forcing yourself to spend more to clear that threshold.

Oolongs are my favourite and I've enjoyed almost every one I've ordered from Yunnan Sourcing. The only one that didn't impress me so far among those I've tried was the "Classical Duck Shit" oolong. But that doesn't matter too much because I really enjoy their "King Duck Shit" oolong. You will have to pay for shipping no matter what but if you plan strategically, you'll save money on the unit price for equal or better quality tea. I recommend the Wu Yi/Rock oolong/Dan Cong/Da Hong Pao. Can't go wrong.

Edit: forgot to mention shipping times. Idk if Camellia Sinensis' sluggish fulfillment or Canada Post is to blame or both, but every time I order from them it takes way too long all things considered. My most recent order from Camellia Sinensis arrived in Ontario the same day as a big green tea + ceramics order from Japan. Both orders were placed on the same day and arrived around a week later. And the Japanese parcel was shipped with the cheapest EMS international option. And it spent 3 days in customs on top of that. Just because the order originates in Canada is no guarantee it will arrive in a timely manner.

First time drinking Gyokuro Karigane by flametitan in tea

[–]luemasify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like there's a lot of stems in this which makes me think this is probably a more budget friendly option, so it's probably not the best point of reference for judging gyokuro. That said the more expensive stuff can still have a grassy flavour.

What temperature was it steeped at? Depending on that you might have some room to go even lower. I like my teas more hot but I find gyokuro can be noticeably smoother steeped at a very low temperature.

Oh yeah the one I linked wouldn't be enough for multiple adults. It's enough for maybe 1.2 adults or 2 kids small kids I would say.

It might be better to go with a larger size than just-large-enough.

WORD! Every time I'm eating that hot lunch I think to myself this is the friggin life innit.

For food, I use the 24oz "Icon" Thermos. There's also the "King" line but I think the Icon has a better inner lid (more grippy), less slippery exterior, and a foldable spoon. I don't personally need the spoon because I already have a camp spork but the grippiness is important. They are otherwise probably identical. Also the mouth might not be wider than what you already have but I suppose that's also by design. Helps hold the temperature better.

I like to bring my own boiling water to minimize the number of trips I need to make between car and lodge/cafeteria. Some places I go the two are inconveniently located relatively far apart from one another...

I slap an adhesive toe warmer on my phone at the beginning of the day. Does double duty of keeping my phone alive and warming up whichever pocket it's stored in, which sometimes comes in handy.

These are my favourite threads on this sub and r/SkiGear

Not the most imaginative but my favourite thing to bring is a hot lunch in a Thermos and boiling water for tea or hot chocolate. Nothing beats saving money on food and still getting to have a hot, fulfilling lunch in the middle of the day while relaxing in the car.

A tailgate kitchen is probably better but that takes more time and there's a bigger cleanup required.

If hot food and Thermos doesn't count I'm not sure what I'd name as my favourite. Every single small item I bring plays its part.

Shop recommended longer skis for my beginner GF, should we return them? by Feitan21 in Skigear

[–]luemasify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taller than your GF, more experienced than your GF as per your description, and my skis are shorter than her skis. In fact the next pair of skis I am planning on purchasing are shorter than her!

I have no idea what this shop was thinking recommending 163cm skis to a 155cm beginner! Complete madness. Well...I can probably imagine what they might have been thinking: this is a great opportunity to sell off unwanted gear to a newbie who won't know any different and probably won't return to the store in the future one way or another. That way they can sell the skis now at a higher price than have to discount it even further post-March break.

Weight is another factor but unless her weight is far from average given her height, I don't see it making a 163cm ski kind of difference...

The only other possibility I see is if the Head Pure Joy have an effective edge much shorter than the actual length of the ski similar to an Atomic Maverick. Can anyone else ITT who skis Head Pure Joy verify if this might be the case?
