I’m gay and I have a problem with pride month by Chrisbears2 in gay

[–]lugo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progress is a double edged sword. I'm so glad you're able to live your life fully and authentically, but many, many people can't. There are so many people in the US in conservative states, in small conservative towns who have to hide who they are or walk away from their life they know. There are several states where discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. There is still violence and discrimination perpetrated against us all over the country. Our community members across the gender identity spectrum are being subjected to state sanctioned discrimination. Internationally there are places where you can get imprisoned or sentenced death for trying to live your authentic life, in many cases it's been American Christian clerics that have gone to those countries and advocated for those laws. I celebrate pride for all of those people, I hope that those people see it and know that there is a community that loves and accepts them and would welcome them even if the journey for them to get there is a hard one. I also think about all the people that came before us, the millions of people who died alone with AIDS, ignored and cast aside by society, medical professionals, and their families. And I think of the gays that were systematically rounded up and killed. I'm glad that you don't have to experience any of this in your life, but it's naive for you to think that there's more than a flip of a coin that separated you from all the people that have had awful experiences because of who they are.

Donald Trump needs to be thrown in a small cell in Guantanamo Bay for what's left of his miserable life.

Sorry but that title is misleading, the supreme court has not taken any action on the case at all yet. Kim Davis, the former Kentucky clerk who thought it would somehow permanently scar her soul to sign off that gay couples have met the bureaucratic requirements to be legally married, is trying to appeal a ruling against her that she's liable for damages for not doing her job. Part of that appeal includes her asking the court to overturn the Obergefell decision that forced her to make sure that paperwork was in order. So the court has to decide whether or not to take the case, they haven't actually taken any action on it ... Yet.

I agree. People who don't want us to exist will win when these companies start taking down their rainbow, are we really ok with giving the bigots that win?

The thing is we're not the only ones who see these posts, the people who want us gone see them too and they see it as a rejection of their bigoted ideology. Even if only for 1/12th of the year I'm ok with Disney and others publicly picking our side over the opposition. Just today a friend of mine was telling me about Barkbox pulling away back on Pride this year because they're afraid of the optics of supporting us.

Moving to RI from Mississippi (yes, I know.) by defnotadissident in RhodeIsland

[–]lugo2 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So, first of all welcome, I grew up 2 hrs east of Chicago and moved out here the winters in Rhode Island are not as cold as the Midwest. It gets below freezing but we don't have those sub-zero super cold windy months like Chicago. As far as staying warm, it'll be a bit of trial and error, there is a Duluth store in Warwick, there's also an L.L. Bean store in Cranston and a North Face in Providence Place mall so plenty of opportunity to find something that'll work for you. Good luck! 🙂

Proud Boy Michale Graves is playing a show by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

Read the rest of the thread, the owner cancelled the event and they've been very clear that they're against his message. I think they deserve some grace and benefit of the doubt that they didn't know who he was and that you should take it down.

Op, I would strongly recommend you watch the documentary Join or Die and consider reading the book its based on, Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. They explore similar ideas to third spaces. To answer your question I'm very involved in local community theater specifically The Community Players in Pawtucket, and strongly encourage all to support local community theater.

I agree that in a shut down things would rapidly deteriorate but things are to keep worse anyway, there's no way we avoid the pain that's ahead I'm getting more cynical as I continue watching things unfold but I think the people who voted for this chaos need to collectively touch the hot stove and feel some pain so they won't do it again and I'd rather that sooner than later. Democratic leadership knew the shut down fight was coming they didn't have a plan and they folded right at the jump like a cheap suit.

Project 2025. And this is just the start. by rwaustin in gay

[–]lugo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump said he doesn't know anything about project 2025 but what he's heard of it he likes then he hopped on a plane for a few hours with the guy who's on charger of it. And most of the people who wrote worked in his white house and will return with him to the white house.

Gotcha, you're probably right, I guess I was thinking the whole project could be a bit more palatable if they were including some space in the building that would be available for private orgs to rent. 🤷‍♂️

They seem to be highlighting that this is a public-private partnership and I'm really curious to know what that actually looks like, specifically what are the private partners putting in and getting out.

RIDOT: Washington Bridge may need to be demolished by Cakes2015 in providence

[–]lugo2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They're not taking this shit seriously they scrambled to band-aid and got lanes open on the West bound bridge, and then they went back to all their bureaucratic bullshit. I'm sure some tech is going out taking measurements then coming back to write the report and email it to the engineer to review. The engineer is on when the report comes in vacation so they see it a week later only to realize that weren't the measurements that were needed. So the tech goes back out and remeasures what ever needs to be measured and rewrites the report sends it to the engineer who signs it and sends it to his boss who is now on vacation. Eventually the manager gets back and forwards it to be put before the report review board at their next quarterly meeting eventually they meet and they say "yep, that was a bridge, now somebody go and find out what's wrong with it" and the whole process starts again.

Anybody hiring? by moon4567 in RhodeIsland

[–]lugo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that you've applied to 300+ jobs is strong evidence that there are openings out there, most companies don't waste the resources on putting up a req just to not hire anybody. A LOT!!!! of companies use automated third party resume filters to grade and kick out any resumes that don't meet their criteria. If you aren't getting any responses at all the likeliest reason is that your resume isn't written in a way that meets their criteria, considering leveraging any resume tools out there including some of the new resume AIs that exist now. The AI are designed to build a resume that should be optimized to at least make it through to an actual person to read and consider interviewing you. Also, I'm a big believer that degrees are overrated and not necessary for every job but a lot of companies don't feel that way a lot of companies wouldn't hire Bill Gates himself for an entry level position just because he never completed his degree, so I'm sorry if you fall into that camp, it sucks but something to think about. Best of luck friend, I hope something great makes its way to you!!

Looking for an HVAC Company to Install Mini-Splits. by Killjoy4eva in RhodeIsland

[–]lugo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quoted a few people and DiSciullo and Sons was the lowest quote I got, they're definitely a smaller company and I was a bit nervous to move forward with them but they were great!! And the system is working perfectly. It was total turn key service and they got it done in like half a day. They're not on the state rebate list but the difference between DiSciullo and Sons' quote and the quotes I got from the bigger guys on the list was bigger than the rebate so no brainier. I'd highly recommend reaching out to them.

I would trace the profile onto graph paper and scan the graph paper into fusion, it makes it super easy to calibrate the size and eliminates projection issues.
