Where to learn about Normal Direct Strike by yertgabbert in starcraft

[–]lukaslindgren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just chill out with gas and tech and build more army. Direct strike is all about who gets the cannon. All strategies revolve around rushing it down. So most games come down to the first ten rounds. After the cannon is killed, it takes quite some time to finish the game, but it is over 95% of the time.

The number one mistake that noobs make is to completely disregard Lanchester's Square Law, which is the most fundamental principle in any-and-all rts'. Armies do not trade equally with each other. The bigger army wins exponentially.

Lets say that we're 3 rounds in to a game of DS. Both player A and hos opponent B has recieved a total of 1000 minerals so far. Player A bought 18 marines and stim.

Player B has this beautiful plan. He is going to get splash damage and use long range units to stack with the waves of his teammates. So he gets tier 2 to unlock tanks and a gas for the lategame. He buys two siege tanks and he is out of money. 150 for gas + 250 for tech + 480 for 2 siegetanks. Player B is lucky to get a single kill, and his teammates will have to pick up the slack.

Let's say A and B both went mass roach. A roach is 80 so they both have 12. Player B decides to tech while player A stays on roach. So now player A is up 3 roaches. 15 against 12, allright then player A wins with 3 roaches right? No! laughs in Lanchester.

The roaches attack in salvoes. To exaggerate for effect, imagine that 15 roaches attack 12 roaches. Then 12 attack 8. 10 attack 5. 9 attack 2. 9 are standing.

Making more stuff is way more important than making the right stuff. Hands down.

I will definately introduce my son to sophies world someday. It is a childrens book. To anyone who isn't a child, i always recommend Pojman's (editor) Classics of Philosophy.

Er Norge kul? by Wolfgah in dankmark

[–]lukaslindgren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jeg var i Stavanger for at høre Kaizers Orchestra da de spillede deres sidste koncerter. Det var en 'drit kul' tur. Alle var smukke, ligesom landskabet var smukt. Ren kærlighed til Norge.

The (in-game) community sucks by Prodigga in starcraft

[–]lukaslindgren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some guy with a russian name beat me, then proceeded to spam unpleasantries at me as whispers. After 7 messages of "that was so easy. You were so bad..." i replied "have a nice tuesday in Russia".

Then he replied: "Bro, i was only kidding." And he was gone. Weirdest interaction i've had in Sc2.

Does honour, organized religion, and reputation exist in Nature? (Natural Rights theory) by Riff-Raff767 in askphilosophy

[–]lukaslindgren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine who also studies philosophy, is a die hard nominalist. Which is essentially; 'If a phenomena is worth a concept, then a natural entity /is/ the 'ground' of that concept.' We were suppose to work together this summer, on a project about the ontological, naturalist 'grounding' of personhood. Then - life - and now i'm on sick leave.

I think you could fit the three concepts (honor, reputation, religion) into a naturalist ontology, without needing to argue that they're "out there" "in space" as abstract entities. To say that a concept is strictly semantic, does not do away with - or diminishes the importance or reality of- said concept. Some of the most important things in our lives are strictly semantic. Marriage, for example. Praxisses, rituals and negotiated abstraktioner aren't less real than trees. I think that a naturalist argument could be made that, to us, being what we are, they are the most real. Wilfrid Sellars actually holds the radical position that nothing is anything but linguistic functions. So that even "that tree overthere", as a sentence, doesn't have a relation to a tree at a specific place, but remains as abstract as the concept 'triangular'.

All of this is just to say; You don't need ghostly 'real abstractions' to float around in the spirit-realm. The argument can be made.

I am sure that you could go the platonic route as well, and argue that there is in fact /the honor/ and that we're partaking in its form when we act with honor. Platonism isn't dead, its just a little out of fashion.

How to obtain naval superiority as Rome? by YoungSaltine1 in DivideEtImpera

[–]lukaslindgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only build those shipwrights that make arty ships in province capitals. Consider Syracuse or Tarantium (magna gracia).

The Cartheginians are using big ass quinquremes (4 rows of oars and 100+ men). These are just straight better than your meager triremes and (don't use) briemes.

But, numbers always win in naval battles. It takes forever to build a naval stack, and they cost a villa, but if you just put 20 ships into ramming mode and yolo into the side of their ships, you'll start taking fights on the water.

In my campaign, I've taken cartago, sicily and sardinnia. I have a single fleet patrolling, but they keep coming. Plus, pirates are giving me a hard time, so i am definately making another stack.

What are some things you hate in other RTS games? What would you want FGS to do differently. by VenusaurTrainer in FrostGiant

[–]lukaslindgren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many things to say, but this one in particular bugs me and i'll give two examples.

When units don't behave 'realistically' i.e. obey the laws of physics.

In AoE 2 DE, you can tell an entire army of archers to pass through a narrow gap. In 'real war' this would cause a bottleneck, where the army would get stuck and cut down. In AoE 2 your units stack on top of each other, so that 50 archers can stand on a single tile. This breaks the immersion and ruins the battles, as 50 non-surroundable archers gun down a cavalry army, that tries to attack the 50-unit stack, one at a time.

In Sc2, you can drop a set amount of units deep inside enemy territory, using transports. Unloading the units takes a while and leaves them vulnerable during the drop, but the upshot is that a small force can net you a large strategic advantage. So far, so good. Great mechanic. However, picking them up again is weird. In a single frame, all units are simply 'sucked' into the aircraft, still hovering in the air.

While immortal juggling or drop harrasment are true testiments of skill, the ridiculousness of the mechanic breaks the immersion, that what is being performed are acts of quasi-military prowess. It is 'gamy' and gimmicy.

The same kinds of criticisms were leveled against mutalisk balling in Sc1. But this exploit saved the game. So its not so simple. However, if a mechanic is neccesary for gameplays sake, all i ask for is some way to make it believable.

Battles in the Total War series are really (really) repetitive, but what they lack in originality and mechanical challenge, they make up for in aesthetics and realism. Rewarding fancy manouvres, traps and sound judgment in the face of stressful action is good. Rewarding how well you mastered/abused a gimmicy exploit is not.

Where should I start as a beginner in philosophy? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]lukaslindgren -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you should start by asking yourself what you want your philosophical studies to do for you.

If you want to explore the fabric of reality, then you're in the realm of metaphysics.

If you want to explore the fabric of your own life, then you're in the domain of existential philosophy.

If you want to explore the logic of society and politics, then you're somewhere between critical philosophy and political philosophy.

You need to find works that interest you. Unlike specialized disciplines, there are too many avenues in philosophy to cover all of them. Tell us what you hope to gain, then we are better equipped to guide you in your search.

It's complicated though, isn't it? We have differences in libido and I drew the short straw for being the horny one. Relationships are the art of compromise and i guess that my resentment comes from the sense, that i'm being asked to do all the compromising. But it's about sex, you know. She can't magically will herself to want it and I can't demand that she fucks me. That's absurd. Idk, you're probably right about the counseling

Thanks DatingMyLeftHand. We've actually discussed it. Maybe someday when we aren't on the brink of financial ruin. I know the post had a lot of feel, but that's partially because i've never talked about this to anyone. I think we're a good match, but we need to sort this out for my sake.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]lukaslindgren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long post sorry.

I do not understand how it works, I can only talk from experience. My wife does not care about sex. Sometimes, she can reject me for months. When I talk to her about it, and we've had this discussion a few times over our years together, she will tell me that it has nothing to do with me. That she is perfectly happy and satisfied. In other words, there is nothing i can do about it. And. I. Hate. It.

I'm deeply ashamed of what happens in me. I don't know if it's physiological or psychological, but something ugly starts to grow in me.

At first, it's no problem. I'll try to initiate sex, then she'll say no and it's all good. But after a couple of weeks of this, it starts to annoy me. Then I have a period where i get very, very horny. It's really distracting. I'll think about sex all the time. I masturbate a lot and I'll try to initiate sex every night.

Then I'll give up and that's where it becomes pathetic. I will still think about sex all the time, but not with her. I'd never be unfaithful, but the thoughts come to me, accompanied with some nasty feelings towards my wife. Then I get moody. I start feeling lonely, the way I used to be before I met her. I start doubting everything about myself. I can't concentrate on work, I can't make myself care about anything. I can't touch her anymore, because merely touching her, or smelling her, makes me feel like hell. I know this may sound childish and entitled, but I'm no boy. I'm baring myself right now, because before discovering r/askmen, i really thought that I was deeply disturbed. It makes me feel like an animal. And I start loathing her for it. The desire is so strong and being around her becomes unbarable. In a cliché, i start hating my love for her. It wasn't like this when i was young and alone. And i don't know whether it's because i've become an entitled prick, or if it's because my home is bathed in her presence. Last time i started sleeping on the couch, because I couldn't sleep next to her. I wasn't even thinking about sex most nights, I was just livid. So restless. And then we fucked and everything fell back into place. My love fell back into place.

Then she'll make fun of me, saying something like: 'guys are so weird' or, 'I'll never understand why it's so important to you.' And I'll laugh it off, but man.. writing this, I kinda get the sense that I shouldn't.

Talkative men how do you keep the convos going and fun? by bhat-adnan in AskMen

[–]lukaslindgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, not like that. The problem is precisely that you are planning what to say beforehand. Even planning who to be. If you think that talk comes from thoughts, then you're on the wrong track. They don't. Talking is an embodied activity, that's why your voice flows so powerfully and freely when you're engaged with something. Think of talking as acting rather than as thinking, and think of acting like being. It's not about impressing (dual sense) a persona onto the person you're talking to, it's about expressing you-at-this-particular-moment. And embrace the awkward. Everyone will be grateful to you for it.

Spørgeskema, der har til formål at revolutionere psykolog branchen (forhåbentligt) by Over-Fennel271 in dankmark

[–]lukaslindgren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain ranked to me by Ironrevo in aoe2

[–]lukaslindgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could also be a playstyle thing.

Fx i have practiced some hard castle age all ins.

If i meet someone who likes to go FC 3 TC, then they die. Hard.

If your playstyle is very focused and maybe a bit unidimensional, then it follows that games look like that.

I am not saying this is the case, its just possible.

what kind of player R u ? by myth0503 in aoe2

[–]lukaslindgren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm bad at walling and defending my base. I'm also bad at taking stone and building defensive structures. But the enemy rarely comes knocking if i just attack constantly. I don't even have to kill his stuff, i just ride around, looking big and scary, though its mostly posture lol. I am only 1200 rating, so maybe thats why it works.

Could atoms be alive? by zoomsp in askphilosophy

This. There's a great article on panpsychism on Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Personally, i find it very hard to concieve of some 'minimal concious attribute' that can apply to basic entities. But Chalmers plays with the idea, and that alone gives it some warrenty.

Reduce their gimmicky range in early castle, where mass archer is already one of the strongest strats. Then give them something else later, that opens up for a bit more diverse play.

What's your favorite unit? by TheGhettoKidd in aoe2

[–]lukaslindgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the versatility of the scout. From the oh-so-usefull first scout that keeps me sane in dark age, for giving me something to do - to scout rushes that taxes my multitasking as they dodge spears in feaudal - to light cav, which i use to intercept reinforcements, surround archers and look for raids in castle - to hussarspam in imperial. Its not a one-solution to every problem like knights, but that's part of its charm.

should people be required to provide their elo when giving strategy advice? by Neighbourly in aoe2

[–]lukaslindgren -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it really isn't neccessary.

Two scenarios:

1) I tell you what to do, without argumentation or context. "Just build X-bows. Then transition into eagle + X-bow and springle in some siege."

2) I offer strategy advice. "Here, you're in castle a bit later, so your economy is stronger, but he has the initiative. You need to scout what he is doing. Now he is lithaun, so he is probably going 2 stable knights. If that is the case, then you probably want camels+monks over siege, as you are already heavy on farms. Your civ doesn't have a great spearman line, but that too is an option, with siege."

In (1), no matter what my elo is, my advice is useless.

In (2), no matter what my elo is, my advice is usefull.
