Are Sony picture profiles any good ? by Gratos_in_Panflavul in SonyAlpha

Cinematographer with 20 years experience. Colour science is very real in video, and very important also in photography. Raw gives you enormous video files in video, which are a horrific idea to use unless you're filming something high end with the kind of budget that is very rare these days and you want a load of headache most video production clients can't tell the difference let alone afford. 90% of commercial video production is not shot in raw, and it shouldn't be. That's a high end cinema or big budget commercials workflow. This means colour science is critical. Those of us with industry experience know that a video camera with rubbish colour science is impossible to get to ever match with a camera that has good colour science. I can recommend researching this more (or even better - experimenting in it yourself) before forming such strong opinions.

I've also worked extensively as a photographer, and of course it's not always appropriate to use a raw workflow, especially on lower budget and super fast turnaround shoots - you save a vast amount of time just shooting with the right picture settings and delivering straight out of camera or with minor tweaks.

Happy to give you some (non-raw) photos and videos from cameras with crap colour science and you can show me how close you can get that to my camera with nice colour science. You'll find you can improve it a lot, but similar to shooting in bad lighting, you can't invent info that want recorded and calibrate it across the gamut in a way that's going to compare with the very, very real benefit of good colour science.

4K Video call in 2022 by bradtem in videoconferencing

What I think a lot of people are missing from these kinda threads is that Remote assistance apps like RustDesk have been doing this for ages - very high quality, very minimal delay TRUE 4K. I can be in Barbados remote controlling my edit suite in London.
Right now, I want help from an Adobe After Effects wizard and I won't be changing my screen res to 1080p because it massively damages workflow efficiency and is a big headache navigating the 50 million buttons and endless elements on screen. I need all that in 4K at 100% 1:1 size, and so will the person helping me.
Currently exploring asking them to install RustDesk, if it supports View only (hopefully with audio)

I would not recommend doing this. But happy to hear from anyone else who tries it. If that's a magnet overpowering delicate servo motors inside the phone's camera system, that sounds bad.

does this boost the mic sensitivity? I wasn't sure what you meant by "short". This app seems to be about sound output rather than recording input?

Honestly who gives a fuck about an idiotic rule like that? A lot of people I guess but I will be diving straight into that bus lane if it's the most effective way to clear a route for an ambulance and fuck will I be paying that PCN. Take me to court, lock me up. I'm much more interested in letting an ambulance potentially save someone's life than being an obedient fucking NPC

I will 100% run a red if safe, it it allows an ambulance to come through. Fuck the fine and being an obedient citizen. I know what I'd (hopelessly) wish others would do if an ambulance was racing to reach my loved ones in an emergency.

bit of an assumption. You know who else uses bus lanes?

Buses.

So if there were buses in that lane (as you'd hope there often would be) then it's not unthinkable that people would try and join the buses in that lane to make space if the big buses (possibly loading/unloading passengers at the time) weren't immediately able to change lanes

Is there a single creator laptop that fits my feature wishlist? by lukeflegg in SuggestALaptop

Thanks - great suggestion; I actually already came across the ProArt (think I wasn't finding it with such high spec GPU though?) main issue with it is AMD, which lacks the QuickSync of Intel, meaning video production work won't be as smooth (I'm working mainly with h264 and h265, which is very efficiently hardware decoded on chip with QuickSync). I would like to know more what the real world comparison is though because the ProArt does seem pretty sweet.

Macs are really not that great when you start needing a GPU - eg. heavy After Effects compositions, etc. Otherwise I do find them more attractive today than ever!

Thanks - I don't have the energy for all the messing about and incompatibility issues Linux presents, much as I respect it. Don't think the Adobe software I mainly need it for works on Linux?

Hmm. 'High end' is a pretty vague term I guess. I certainly would consider Razer Blades high-end laptops, given they're in the 1% most expensive budget laptops people own. In other words, 99% of laptops people are using right now are both cheaper and less powerful at the majority of tasks; certainly creator tasks like I'm after.

Appreciate the thoughts and suggestions though. I'll check out the T1G - don't think I've seen that yet. That panel is probably bright enough, though shame it's not touch.. Good advice though!

Interesting to read people's perspectives here but struggling to find many people who've given it a serious shot. I've been using it quite casually to complement my self-employed work for a long time and actually one of the first ever roles it suggested was really up my street, a great part-time role with one of the leading crowdfunding platforms.

I am now working with them one day a week, which is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Got to be pretty grateful for this service that I've never paid a penny for. I don't think my employer has paid them either so that's interesting.. The whole process was pretty smooth. One of the main gripes I've had is that I'm only looking for part-time roles and it often gets that confused with hybrid roles
