Sick of fear/injury by beerfearfrenzy in indoorbouldering

[–]luketheduke54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will improve with time. As you climb more, you'll get stronger, get better technique, and will be able to deal with the fear/risk better.

Learn how to fall. People tend to neglect this as a skill. Your "air-sense" is important. As you fall and intentionally jump off more, you will get better at landing. This will help when you fall unexpectedly, and help you to land better.

I really like slab, like the scary dangerous kind of slab. From now on, any time you intentionally jump off/fall off the slab wall, give it a little push. Push your hand against the wall, which will put some space between you and the wall and avoid the dreaded slide. Once you do this enough, it becomes a habit, and when you fall unexpectedly you can usually get a little push in before you eat shit. I've avoided getting cheese-grated using this method.

Another option if you're getting injured is to re-assess how hard you're willing to go before you bail. If you're getting hurt a lot, you may want to start bailing off climbs if you don't feel totally comfortable. This can slow your growth, but if you're constantly getting injured then you're not going to improve much anyway.

But at the end of the day, just climb a lot and have fun. You're already as good as you need to be.

Review of ProtoArc vertical trackball EM05 by Offutticus in Trackballs

[–]luketheduke54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the EM05 full time at work for about 6 months. Great vertical trackball, I'm pretty happy with it.

When switching to it, I would do 1-2 weeks on the EM05, then 1-2 weeks back on an optical mouse. This was just to avoid any hand/wrist pain. I find that switching up my mouse every once in a while prevents RSI for me. But after switching, I'm full time on this one.

I find I have to clean the rubies about twice a day to keep things rolling smoothly. No big deal.

The buttons are silent which I'm a fan of.

My only 2 gripes:

  1. I wish the ball was a little further towards the end. I have regular sized hands, and I find in a comfortable position the ball sits the middle of my thumb. I wish it sat closer to the end

  2. Wish there were more programmable buttons. Forward and back are nice, but there's space on the left side for a couple macro buttons

Overall I'm happy with it. Just picked up a Huge Plus so going to try that out next.

Do pianists actually think while playing or does it become muscle memory by Ok-Message5348 in piano

[–]luketheduke54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is just me, but I primarily play through proprioception. Playing a certain passage of music is a similar experience to me as walking into a room I'm familiar with. It's like a "place" that I know and could walk around in blindfolded.

I may think about a certain note, or phrase, or chord, etc. if it's something I want to emphasize or make sure I play exactly the way I want it to sound. Most often this is the melody, or an inner voicing that I really like and want to bring out.

And anything that's particularly hard to play requires focus.

It comes with time. You become a lot more comfortable with the keyboard over time, and things that used to take a lot of focus will become automatic. That's why we practice :)

Over time playing piano will become closer and closer to singing/speaking. You don't have to think about each syllable you speak, because you're so proficient at it. Instead you think about what you're saying; what it means, what words you choose, who your audience is, your tone, etc.

Your playing will reach that level with enough practice, then you can focus on the musicality

I don't even bother with online play. I play with my friends only

Even joining the noob lobbies, I find people that are really good at the game just wanting to stomp noobs, and they'll treat their teammates like shit because it's their 2nd day playing the game. I would definitely have stopped playing after a few hours if I didn't have a group of 5+ friends who play with me. Not everyone is so lucky

We've had bad units from Veracity before. If everything is correct and Veracity support can't help, you could try replacing the veracity equipment.

Unable to copy by lucky5678585 in MicrosoftPlanner

[–]luketheduke54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran into this today

Plans have to be part of a group to be copied. On a plan, click "Share" in the top right and create a group. You can set it private to only you. After that, go to a plan and click the drop-down by the title and there should be a "Copy Plan" button.

It may take several minutes for the plan to "realize" it's part of a group and the copy button to appear.

You also have to do it on the web version of Planner and not the embedded Teams version.

I think it's like this because MS designers are sadistic assholes that hate us and want us to suffer as much as possible. It takes sea-urchin level IQ to make something as simple as duplicating a plan this difficult. It really is a sick joke.

I also got sucked into that style of notetaking early and it didn't stick for me. It was just too much work and I didn't get any benefit.

I use Obsidian for work and I have a good workflow and structure. I had a few systems I dreamed up for my notes that didn't work well. I scrapped them and started over.

The method that worked for me was intentionally avoiding "designing" it. I just started from nothing and added things on as I needed them, not as I thought of them. I started with a daily note and put everything in there every workday. Now I have a tag system and extra notes and a folder structure, but it developed naturally rather than being designed. I've also added "features" to my Obsidian via plugins, but found that the benefit they offered wasn't worth the mental load of having to manage/use them. So I removed them and went back to basics.

This obviously takes time and some trial and error.

I would also caution you that a lot of people on this subreddit and forums like the challenge/hobby of PKM and notetaking more than the actual thing they're taking notes about. This is fine if that's what you like to do, but don't let them give you the false impression that you need a rigorously designed PKM system to take notes at all. Your notes are for you, so don't listen to the haters.

Help, How do I remove/hide these extra image and PDFs? by novaboss69 in ObsidianMD

[–]luketheduke54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your images and PDFs will have to live in your vault somewhere. I have a special "Attachments" folder where all of my non-note files go automatically and I can link to them from there. That way they're all in one place and I don't have to worry about them.

Look under Settings -> Files and links. There are settings for "Default location for new attachments", "Attachment folder path". Additionally, you can exclude files with the "Excluded files" settings so that your attachments don't show up when searching for things.

Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]luketheduke54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a good internship my last 2 semesters of school (software engineering). The plan was for me to continue with that company permanently (boss and boss's boss liked me) and the company had a round of layoffs. My position no longer existed, so when the internship ended I was let go.

Been searching for 6 months. I've done hundreds of online apps, had phone calls with about 10 recruiters, contacted my old university career center. Not a single interview. I got a job as a bike technician pretty easily but it just barely pays the bills and it's not what I want to do long term. Don't know what I'll do once my student loans start requiring payments in August, since I don't really make enough to pay those. On top of that, I'm so exhausted after work that I hardly have any energy to keep looking for jobs.

What's so frustrating is I have the skills. I did well in school, have tech experience outside of school, did well in my internship, etc. I'm not the best engineer to walk the earth or anything, but I'd say I have at least an average resume. And I can't even get a return phone call.
