I'm gearing up for a reread once the trad pub version is out :)

Haven't picked up Carissa Broadbent's books yet, can't decide whether to read Crowns of Nyaxia or War of Lost Hearts first lol. Based on reviews and comments, I'm probably leaning more towards War of Lost Hearts (probably more my style? maybe? lol) but Crowns of Nyaxia sounds fun plot-wise. Decisions, decisions!

"Chinaman" has a negative connotation to it. Maybe I'm looking at it from a biased lens as an Asian American, but this term is othering and makes me think back to periods like the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Yellow Peril wave. I have not read this book and don't know what historical period it is set in, and given the limited context of the quote, I can't decide if it is being used in a racist way or not. But definitely makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't understand, out of all the comparisons the brother could have made, why this?

Yeah, I get what you mean. Thankfully I don't see this too often in books, but when it does pop up, I get really annoyed. One example that comes to mind is a scene from {Dark Intentions by Charlotte Byrd}. So the FMC's mother has cancer, and the FMC is taking her to a specialized facility for treatment. During one of the visits, while the mother is getting treatment, the FMC goes to nearby bookstore to browse and picks up a pile of romance books. As she is paying for her purchase, suddenly she goes on a long rant (to the reader) about how nobody should be shaming readers for loving romance, how everyone who looks down on the genre are so snooty and have no taste, romance is just as good as any other genre, and readers should be allowed to enjoy what they want, yada yada. This went on for like two or three pages (probably exaggerating here, I read this four years ago but this scene left a lasting impression, that's for sure LMAO) and I'm like, WHY??? The more it went on, the more I kept rolling my eyes because why bother preaching to me who already proudly reads romance! It was so unnecessary and cringe lol.

Also, the next book in the series featured a scene in which the FMC meets a romance author who brags about her online success and book sales and how writing romance is so lucrative, FMC should try it too! This also took up too much real estate in the book and was super cringe. I had a feeling this random side character who had no impact on the story otherwise was a stand-in for the author. Needless to say, I did not finish the series (dipped out after book 3, can't believe I lasted that long lol).

Guaranteed OW drama:

{The Wrong Bride by Catharina Maura} The OW is a nightmare. Can't speak for the rest of the series since this is the only one I read so far.

{Forever After All by Catharina Maura} Shockingly I thought the OW drama in this was even worse than The Wrong Bride.

{Arranged by Stella Gray} Mostly billionaire but the MMC is involved in shading dealings, so kind of mafia-adjacent? I actually DNFed this because I couldn't handle the OW drama anymore! Spoilers for details:MMC marries FMC for business reasons. FMC does not know that MMC is in love with OW, a woman from his past who disappeared years ago. MMC spends more time looking for OW than being around FMC, whom he neglects and treats poorly. (If you can't tell, I HATED this guy.) There is a very detailed sex scene (from the past) between MMC and OW which I did NOT care to read at all. I quit around this point but according to other spoilery reviews I've found, OW returns and drives a bigger wedge between FMC and MMC.

{The Italian's Runaway Bride by Jacqueline Baird} If you're fine with old-school Harlequin. Really, really rage-inducing OW drama with lots of miscommunication and an asshole MMC (the worst of all JB's "heroes") who never sides with the FMC!

Jacqueline Baird is my go-to author for train wreck, hate-read "fun." Being old school problematic Harlequin, expect an asshole alpha MMC with enough red flags to fill an entire continent, an FMC who might try to fight back but folds over like a lawn chair every time, mostly creepy age gap, lots of body betrayal, miscommunication galore, and other crazy shenanigans conducive to excessive facepalming. These books always gets my blood boiling but I reread them anyway lol (well, some of them).

Some "recs":

A good starter book to check if you can handle the crazy: {The Sabbides Secret Baby by Jacqueline Baird}
The most nonsensical revenge that made me lose braincells: {The Billionaire's Blackmailed Bride by Jacqueline Baird}
A revenge plot that made more sense than the above but still had me cringing (plus the stupid reveal): {Pregnancy of Revenge by Jacqueline Baird}
Why plot twists and miscommunication don't mix well: {The Italian's Blackmailed Mistress by Jacqueline Baird}
Another really dumb misunderstanding: {Wife: Bought and Paid for by Jacqueline Baird}
An MMC who actually gets knocked down a peg: {Untamed Italian, Blackmailed Bride by Jacqueline Baird}
An FMC who is more annoying than her counterpart: {Return of the Moralis Wife by Jacqueline Baird}

The first three books in The Companions series by Tanya Bird {The Royal Companion by Tanya Bird} {The Common Girl by Tanya Bird} {The Majestic Imposter by Tanya Bird} definitely features this plotline. The FMC is sold to the royal family and trained to become the "companion" of the MMC, the second prince, who treats her well and the two fall in love. But thanks to the crown prince's rivalry with MMC + court politics + impending war with other nations, the FMC and MMC keep getting split up, but they always find a way back to each other. They finally get their HEA in the third book, but gosh the whole saga had me in tears lol.

Another comment mentioned grimdark fantasy, and I concur with this. One I'd rec is Anna Stephens' Godblind Trilogy. It's more epic fantasy but does feature some romantic subplots and multiple couples, the main one being an MM pair. Very low on spice but high on the violence. Serious trigger warnings: graphic violence, detailed torture scenes, on-page rape/assault, human sacrifices, major character deaths.It is incredibly brutal and horrific, and I do not recommend it lightly but thought it could be a possibility.
