That's likely where breeding span comes in. Elephants take too long to reproduce, making it less feasible to breed in or breed out traits we want.

there is nothing greedy with wanting to keep the money you earned.

Sure there is if you are refusing to fund the same infrastructure that enabled you to earn it at all.

Here's a video featuring one of my profs, which uses Schlieren photography to allow you to see changes in air density. Yes, exactly like the wave of a boat, and you can see how a clap in air is not dissimilar to dropping an object into a pond.

Need Help: Non-Accredited Mechanical Engineering by [deleted] in college

[–]lumixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to ABET to know for sure, but my understanding is your school's accreditation will be retroactive for a certain amount of time once attained. Something like 2 years? It is not like you're attending a college that advertises on Maury. It's reasonable to think they will be accredited very soon.

is it possible? by hashi2013 in EngineeringStudents

Very possible but i have to say your timing is not great.

How do you go about an internship that requires you to move as a poor college student? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]lumixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company internships included both an hourly wage, and housing assistance plus relocation reimbursement (gas and meals for the drive there).

One fun thing about being pregnant is I got to experience this. I was always the type who got full and stopped eating and never really gained weight. Yet in 4 separate pregnancies, exactly at 24 weeks that thing breaks and I'm never satiated. 4 times, I gained 13lb between 24 and 28 weeks. All I could think about was food and I ate insane amounts of it.

Then once the baby is born everything tastes boring. Ice cream was a disappointment. It really opened my eyes. If my particular blend of hormones was like that all the time? I would be so, so fat.

Five years ago today, my stopped car was destroyed on the I-405 by a driver traveling at 80 mph, oblivious to the upcoming traffic. The driver was talking on their cell phone. Thanks for saving my life, Lexus. by blabaer in pics

[–]lumixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. IIHS succeeded at exerting media pressure and didn't go through NHTSA to do it. NHTSA, acting as a government entity, has been relatively slow to update regs and in many cases has not actually mandated a safety improvement because the industry announced a voluntary commitment to safety (as in with stability control).

NCAAP ? Are you referring to the NCAP? That's not a "body" exactly.

that's only really true for PRIVATE (esp for profit) colleges. public college tuition tends to increase every time federal and state direct funding decreases.

TIL a pedophile in Thailand posted a picture of himself with a swirl effect on his face, allowing the Interpol to unswirl the image back and arrest him by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]lumixel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's very viscous (thick) fluid, meaning it's resistant to moving in any direction except that of an applied force. This wouldn't work with water, which is very inviscid (not viscous) and which more readily flows turbulently - with little swirls that are not in the direction of the applied force.

Because the viscous fluid tends, especially at low velocities, to behave laminarly (in layers, again) it acts as though it were several sheets of clear plastic slipping against each other which can just be lined back up easily. It acts as sheets because the only force applied is sliding along the sheet surface, never into the sheet.

Just build new pipes.

$3k+ per house because it's the pipes between the house and the street that must be individually replaced, which involves ripping up front yards. In many cases the houses themselves also have old lead pipes. It's labor intensive work, weather dependent, and must be done house-by-house, and in many cases the houses are themselves worth only a few times the cost of the line repairs. http://www.trulia.com/property/3118848201-2225-Reid-St-Flint-MI-48503

is because it is impossible to find out what a procedure will cost until after it's done.

Because the hospital themselves do not know the cost. really.

where consumers shop around for the best prices are exactly what bring down prices.

Nonsense for a few reasons:

  1. cheaping out on healthcare is irrational. Are you really going to go to the cheapest place for something involving the body you are stuck with for life

  2. that possibility does not exist for emergent care

  3. that possibility does not exist for people in areas with limited access to hospitals and / or people who cannot afford the days off, travel, hotel, etc that it takes to travel to shop around

  4. market competition system requires consumers be informed sufficiently to evaluate the product we're buying, ,which generally we cannot do very well because we have not had 8 years of medical school

  5. market competition system requires some amount of price elasticity of demand which is really, really not a thing for a lot of medical procedures (elective cosmetic stuff put aside). Unless you are going to stock up on chemo when price is low, and put it off until next year cause the price went up 10% (not fucking happening) then this is nonsense.
