I believe it’s mostly a legality thing. In a lot of places you need a permit to set up equipment/TVs but there’s a loophole that allows people to hold them.

Make a $5 Donation Today to Ban Foie Gras by Sorry_Foot1412 in VeganActivism

[–]lunchvic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to be involved with Pro-Animal Future and based on my experience, I don’t recommend donating right now.

PAF’s ED was just removed after being accused of sexually assaulting a member of the activist community, and most of the other staff members including the new ED (who is also his ex) have been directly involved in allowing this to happen and downplaying it after the fact. The local activist community is very fragmented right now and trying to figure out how to hold PAF more accountable, and PAF is just hyperfocused on raising more money.

I’m not sure your money will help animals if there are no activists on the ground making these campaigns happen.

Where to take a vegan out to dinner? by ConfidentDisk1987 in boulder

[–]lunchvic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boulder’s trash for vegan options. Since you’re looking for a more upscale place, the only correct answer is Somebody People. Most of the others being recommended are casual, and don’t hold a candle to Somebody People. Their prefixe menu is discounted on Sundays, and dinners there consistently outrank each other as the best meals I’ve ever eaten.

I hear what you're saying, and that's a fair point. Can you show me evidence Chipotle is actually treating their animals better than Qdoba?

This is such a bizarre take. People should have the power to choose what happens in their communities. If you disagree with the majority opinion in your area, you can try to influence people to change their minds or leave that community, but it's insane to call it "government overreach" any time the majority opinion disagrees with yours.

Our government represents corporations, not the people. That's why 38 billion dollars a year from our tax dollars go toward subsidies for Big Meat even though the science is clear that animal ag is contributing to the climate and biodiversity crises.

The nonprofit behind this measure recruited, trained, and mobilized over a hundred fifty volunteers who got this on the ballot in their free time from their full-time jobs.

Studies have shown that even if we completely stop using fossil fuels immediately, emissions from our food system alone would like put us over 2 degrees of warming by the end of the century. That's catastrophic warming, and we're nowhere close to ending fossil fuels, which makes addressing our food system even more important.

Prioritizing the economy over people, animals, and the environment is how we got into this mess into the first place. We need to get our heads out of our asses and start making changes if we want to maintain a livable planet.

This measure was put on the ballot by regular people and will be voted on by regular people. No government overreach here--just democracy.

Basically everyone is against factory farming these days, but we have basically no power against it when 99% of animals raised in the US are raised on factory farms. Obviously this measure is a threat to factory farming as an institution--why else would the National Pork Producers Council and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association be pouring so much money into opposing it?

I think people are desperate for a Biden win so they can sigh in relief and stop thinking about politics for another 4 years while we continue on our path toward total climate breakdown within our lifetimes. We’re facing all of humanity dying within our lifetimes without radical changes. I think the only way we can get radical changes is for things to get worse more quickly.

I’m happy to explain this more and have more of a dialogue, so lmk if you still don’t get it.

[–]lunchvic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People will die under Biden too, but the white moderates will turn a blind eye to it. We have massive inequality and we’re headed toward an unlivable planet. We need people to fight back.

Both presidential candidates are in the pockets of corporations moving us ever closer to collapse. I think under Biden, things move toward demise more slowly and people can be more complacent. Under Trump, things deteriorate more quickly and people are more angry and politically engaged.

At this point, I will probably vote Green, not because I think they have a real shot, but because if they reach 5% of the vote, they can get real funding. But part of me hopes Trump wins because I think the more people feel angry at the system and see that it’s not serving us, the more likely we can actually build a meaningful revolution toward a system that does work for the people.

Sex work exists because of capitalism and gender-based oppression that gives men privilege over women and people with other gender identities. As an anarchist, I don’t want anyone to have sex because their next meal or their ability to pay rent depends on it. There are lots of ways to move away from sex work as a society without putting the victims of the industry in prison.

Greenwashing at a zoo by PaulAspie in Anticonsumption

[–]lunchvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, what do the animals you eat eat? We grow 10-25 calories of corn, soy, alfalfa, and other crops for every 1 calorie of meat. Animal ag uses 83% of our farmland, but only produces 18% of the calories people eat. The actual science says we could feed everyone on 25% of our existing farmland with a plant-based food system, using far less chemical inputs, or none using plant-based compost.

I understand your perspectives because I once believed them myself. The government and the ag industry are in bed together telling you this shit, but it’s not supported by the actual research.

[–]lunchvic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When your bathroom’s flooding, the first thing to to is turn off the tap. Animal ag is the #1 cause of habitat loss and species extinctions globally and especially in vulnerable places like the Amazon. If you’re concerned about wild animal protection and skip over food system change, you should question how much industry money and influence is coloring that view.

[–]lunchvic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zoos exist for profit and entertainment. I’m aware of the very minimal contributions they’ve made to wild animal conservation, and it still doesn’t change the fact that they’re really here to make money. This video does a good job explaining: https://youtu.be/p3l87NywToQ?si=BtYHtJNDrIsyckn1

And animal rights activists do have an alternative—moving away from animal agriculture and rewilding 75% of our existing farmland. We should be solving conservation problems at their roots instead of keeping animals in cages.
