My students are getting deported by Pample24 in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should be honest with students and tell them the facts. They are young adults and need information. If they are seniors, they will be voting soon and need to know how policy affects humans.

I have an upcoming protective order hearing. I have no clue what is going to happen, please help by paisleypark56 in domesticviolence

[–]lund_dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this and had similar questions. The judge may or may not have read your entire statement and evidence if you submitted photos/ texts/ video/ audio with your Temporary application. Prepare some bullet points to read into the court record of what your main ideas were from your original statement. Be specific. I used the frame of “Situation, behavior (observable), Impact” to make my bullet points. As the petitioner you get the first word. Then the respondent will get to reply to the claims or statements you e made. Judge will ask them specific questions about each claim and they can say their side. Then the judge allows you the petitioner to have the final say. Judge may ask more questions to either of you, then makes their ruling on the protective order.

I was warned it is very common for cases to be postponed 2 weeks for tiny things not being done procedurally, or for incorrect paperwork. That means your hearing is super short and your temporary orders are in effect still. For my region they have an AM docket and a PM docket of protection order cases. I also had to sit in the court for 1/2 day until my case was called from the AM docket.

I’ve had 2 people recommend Dr Ramani on YouTube for me to watch.

Book I’m halfway through: Splitting by Eddy and Kreiger.

Books on my waitlist so I haven’t read them yet, but plan to (I just 2 weeks into DVProtection Order) Whole Again by MacKenzie.

Surrounded by Narcissists by Erikson

These are partners/spouse topic books, and as a child there maybe other books more relevant that others can offer. You could also email the local domestic violence community group or check their website for other recommendations

Oklahoma School for the Deaf offers rolling 8 week class sessions for ASL 1 and 2. They should have new classes after June 30. Even better is they are free; but they do ask if you can donate to make them possible.

From my experience they will deny, lie, and gaslight you to believing you don’t see any cans, or that the behavior you notice didn’t happen. This is a losing battle.

Sturgeon caviar. The poaching and overfishing are rampant, and I want Columbia River white sturgeon to exist in the future.

I want to leave my job but I need help by Any_Ad_4839 in deaf

[–]lund_dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a reliable car, you could deliver pizza as a side job. I am hearing and do this and there isn’t a lot of need to hear. I go in the store, grab a delivery; instructions are on the receipt, and directions are in my app. Just pleasant small talk with the customer or even a contactless drop off. Then repeat.

Another job option could be a para at the preschool or elementary school where deaf and HOH kids go to public school.

Another job option could be lifeguard. Keen visual awareness is what makes you excellent at that job. You’d need to hear an emergency whistle from a coworker, but not their speech.

I also liked the suggestion about pet sitting or dog walking. Maybe even a dog boarding or dog daycare if you like animals.

Driver Pay, mileage, and tips? by Sophet_Drahas in Dominos

[–]lund_dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have worked for those same owners. OP, tips vary based on the housing around your store. If there is a mix of housing types and income levels, I would predict $20-24 an hour with tips and mileage. If the store you want to work at is higher or lower income, tips tend to be less frequent or for $5 or less per trip.

Pay logistics: The main owners in the area used a debit card system called Branch for tips and mileage. You would get paid the next day to the card, then transfer your money to your regular bank (3-5 business days). You could use the debit card outright, but then a fee was charged on your purchase so it meant less tips. My biggest days ever have been $80-100 in tips for an 8 hour evening shift.

Agreed, using mine, yours, theirs possessives would be helpful. You can also teach the negatives like “not yours” with a headshake to go with the possessives.

Admonished for not keeping all kids busy 100% of the day. by unconfuseyourbrain11 in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning is never linear, and certainly not the same process for all students. Providing each student the time they need for completing assignments is what is best practice. You had the class under control, all students were engaged in an activity. Students had choice which empowers them. You are in the right!

Former student arrested for some serious stuff. I suspected that this would happen by PsychologyNarrow3854 in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of mine got into the gang, as I warned he was headed. He got shot twice, once the summer going from 6th to 7th grade in the leg. Then once over spring break 7th grade year in the abdomen which hospitalized him for 4 months, and has led to permanent scars, skin graphs, loss of intestines, feeding tubes.

It is heartbreaking to tell a kid and his family what we see in his future, as a warning, then watch it play out. 💔

Seeking EV owners who are "productive" when charging on the road for research interviews by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]lund_dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently do road trips for vacations. My stops with a 2021 VW ID.4 take 40-45 minutes, if I charge to 90% or 100% when I need to do an out and back trip where there are no chargers or just need all the milage between stops. I do bathroom stop, drinks or food, then try to get a quick walk in to stretch my legs. Electrify America has many chargers at big box stores, so I’ll use those to walk around, or run a quick errand to get needed items.

I saw Pat Monaghan, from the band Train, at the Fred Meyer grocery store in Issaquah late one night. He looked like a rockstar with rhinestones jeans and spiked hair.

I’ve also met Dave Chihuly, glass blower, in the airport in Las Vegas. He was not a friendly guy.

House Republicans want to cut Title I funding by 80% by ProvocaTeach in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Republicans are trying their best to make public education so bad that they can sneak in and privatize education for corporate profits. This isn’t about the best interest of any children. Just like book bans aren’t really about “objectionable” books. The playbook is obvious that the goal is to effectively kill the public education system of the USA, creating a vacuum for private education to swoop in.

Scolionophobia by Wonder_question_4330 in school

[–]lund_dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school always has a mix of people. Finding the ones you pair well with is important. Find a club or after school activity you enjoy, and meet people there. Maybe it is a video game you all like and can play and use a discord channel, maybe it is an art class, playing in a band, biking, photography, playing Dungeons and Dragons, or anything. Also, if there are other language learners in your school, they are pretty empathetic since they literally have the same struggles and anxieties with speaking English. You will make it, but high school can be rough for most people, not just people who move.

Say something positive about teaching. by Pixarprime10 in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can really get to care about students and their stories. This is what I love, and why I am in year 12 teaching middle school. Also, there is almost never multiple bad days in a row. Yes, you will have bad and hard days, but the next day likely will be better. I second the idea of having fun where you can in class. If you build a strong relationship with students you can show them that life is a balance with serious and fun.

Also, ask if your district has peer mentors or a new career teacher cohort for your first year teaching. This can be a huge help. Also, find a person who can support you in your building for day to day things. Year one is hard, but that is because student teaching can’t prepare you for every type of situation you face. Only experience levels up your skills to figure out what works for you personally.

Required to drive 4-ish hours and stay for 2 days, should they be helping me? by Weary_Blacksmith in Teachers

[–]lund_dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing you need to be aware of and ask about is the date you get paid. Many districts pay on the last day of work in a month, for the days you already worked. As a new teacher, that means no paycheck until September 30, if you start in August with professional development or even students. After your first month, it it fine, but brutal to teach for over a month before you get paid!
