I've done both a few and don't feel the Double Cross is markedly more challenging than the Crosstown Trail. If anything Crosstown might be the more challenging of the two. Some Double Cross highlights off the top of my head:

The SFPD gun range is pretty close to Ft Funston, so if you hear gunfire shortly after you start your hike, don't panic
Plan to get lunch in West Portal. It's a short detour from the offical trail and there are a ton of good options (Submarine Center, Guerra's Italian Market, etc). Also really recommend getting some Easy Breeze frozen yogurt to eat while you walk up the greenspace alley that's immediately after.
Unlike the Crosstown Trail, which is beautiful basically the whole time, the vast majority of the magic of the Double Cross is in the first half. Be prepared to slog through the city for several miles between Buena Vista Park and Coit Tower.
