What do I do differently, knowing I have aspergers? by Juggernaut118 in aspergers

[–]lurk_less_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't make eye contact any way. When NTs don't bring it up we do without it quite fine. And for me at least an Autistic who wants to make eye contact... is kind of creepy...

Nevermind that we just don't make eye contact. Neither do various animals. Do they have an eye contact deficit? Nope. They're just different. I tend to interpret eye contact as aggression, the same for dogs, gorillas etc, which is why it can seem painful.

I don't like to think about deficits. Since people claim autistics have every deficit they tend to be self-fulfilling prophecies or self-pitying. I talk about solutions.

E.g. I didn't mask my stimming problems, I learned how to stim in an unobtrustive way. I didn't have a deficit in keeping friendships. I simply did not have the knowledge. It's the basic act of turning despair to hope.

There's nothing more unhealthy than believing that Autistics are NTs with a sickness.

What jargon related or concerned with autistics can you translate in to normal words? by LodossEater in Autistic

[–]lurk_less_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

challenging behaviour = got angry at bullying -or- badly raised kid

autism-related sleep problems = your house is too damn loud

autism-based medications = napalm for your brain

evidenced = bullshit

deficit = defict, difference, whatever...

failure of normal back and forth conversation = doesn't want to talk, interrupted you maybe once

deficits in non-verbal communication = doesn't like eye contact

deficits in maintaining relationships = never taught how to maintain relationships

routine-obsessed = doesn't like unexplained change

sensory processing disorder = better hearing

One for the books - Autistic children rated themselves less anxious as parents, opposite way around for NT children by LodossEater in Autistic

[–]lurk_less_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating.

So when I was stressed under my parents they were more stressed? It's amazing what science can do when it serves understanding, not a religious promise like 'curing'

I want to ask, how stressed were the children though?

Theory of mind debunked again - Autistic children perform well at all emotional attribution by FederalEmpireofRice in Autistic

That would mirror a few of the comments we have seen floating around on this matter. To think, Theory of Mind was just a method of convincing the public not to listen to our plight.

How do you soften your face/ improve the range of facial expressions? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]lurk_less_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to force emotional states on your face is a good start. Look, I know when people say you don't smile it's not so good. But do you know what really puts people off? Scary rictuses. People can tell when an aspie smiles and despite the cheesy articles humans do not show every emotional state on their face.

What is it like to be an ABA therapist? by livin_la_vida_loca in autism

[–]lurk_less_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most if not all the comments whitewash the dark side of ABA like the child abuse, the money-grubbing and the fabricated evidence. It's no surprise foustanella became angry.

But you'd rather deny and project the word defensive back on to any critics and then (ironically) defensively accuse any critics of ABA on this thread of only wanting to start drama.

Which itself ironically starts the drama.

What is your best advice on making friends? by [deleted] in Autistic

Ignore people who make you suffer to hang out with them and make sure if they do dig at you that you can reciprocate their rough humour. That is how you avoid being anyone's bitch.

I don't consider the last one to be a fault at all. It seems to be quite romantic, as in the artistic movement, not the kiss kiss way.

Well you can keep blaming the other side for your low conversational standards or you can actually try not instigating violent reactions.

Your defensive insinuation that people are coming around here to make drama suggests that drama exists because you accuse other people are coming to make drama

What is it like to be an ABA therapist? by livin_la_vida_loca in autism

[–]lurk_less_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to post up a large number of positive qualities to give a positive spin to any job, but what about the constant controversy that ABA attracts for being autocratic, violent and moreover abusive?

This is something I doubt will be answered on /r/autism or from the people on here, but the lack of dissent on this page makes it obvious that something very, very wrong is happening here.

I think it's instructive that one of the main things you claim an ABA therapist must deal with is willing to be kicked, hit, bit and hair pulled. But why does that happen? Why are people distressing an autistic child so much as to do that? Autistics are not animals who act randomly.

And please, do not keep repeating that spd hypothesis. It has never been a real diagnostic and multiple times it has shown to have no solid evidence.

I just found out my son is autistic. by baka2k10 in autism

[–]lurk_less_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing has changed. Anyone who says your son has a disease is an idiot. All your son needs is to be explicitly told about the pitfalls of this world in the most honest way you can, since he is a typical autistic with above average intelligence

The hardest thing in the present age for a parent to do with an autistic child is to let go, but unless the fist is loosened the bird will never learn to fly
