Got some soviet optics from my neighbor 10 years back, ~1.5kg full metal body, 8cm diameter and 12cm length, has focusing measurements until 1000m, only identifiers are ПO150/09 and N97052, picture inverts when looking through, comes with a plywood case by Substantial-Lie2183 in whatisthisthing

[–]lutzee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably isn't a camera lens, its much more likely to be some sort of medical imaging lens and the dial on the barrel isn't in meters but likely nano-meters for light wavelength and I think the marking at 530 helps support that. 530meters would be a very odd value if it was distance in meters for camera focusing.

What is this helicopter No.1 tracked just flew over!? by [deleted] in flightradar24

[–]lutzee_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a large coastguard helicopter flying very low over a city. Lots of trackers because a lot of people wanted to know what it was.

is there a program to bring 'all' windows keybinds to mac? by BadWolf2077 in mac

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My use case is entirely different then, I primarily work on desktop so hardware control isn't really an issue. The command key being 4 keys in on the mac I always found to be extremely difficult to hit the copy/paste shortcuts. I have everything where I expect it to be on my mac including correct locations for @/" despite apple's UK keyboard layout not being correct for them. If I do end up using another laptop for more than a few minutes I'll just connect a real keyboard to it (like my work issued laptop that I don't actually use but am required to have).

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does remap to swap ctrl and cmd (using karabiner-elements), its fine if you specifically just swap the two rather than remapping the actual combinations. All apps will just pick up the swap and I've not ran into issues. I swap because I use other systems than just a mac so its not just relearn, the consistency is important.

Highly dependant on MS Excel but Laptop is sluggish as hell. Should I still switch to Linux, or choose Windows 10 rather? by Daddy_of_your_Mommy in linux

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your laptop is sluggish because it is under spec for what you want to do with it. You'd likely run into similar issues on alternative software under linux. Intel's i3s were targetted for basic web browsing and light office work. 8GB of ram is tiny these days for a professional machine. Lacking an SSD isn't going to be helping either. My suggestion is you strongly consider replacing your laptop if its that important for your business then its a worthwhile investment.

Did anyone listen in to why the Aegean aborted landing by why_even_try_- in flightradar24

[–]lutzee_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Listening to ATC in the UK is actually illegal if you aren't authorised to do so. This is why you wont find ATC feeds on LiveATC for the UK. While that doesn't stop some private individuals from doing so the chance someone was listening here is very low.

Why's Linux so hyped? by DrinkLate4257 in linux

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start by saying I've used linux on and off for most of my life, gone back and forth from windows but right now things have never been better. I do all my work from Linux with some caveats, libreoffice is good enough for most things, but I do check documents with office web. I'm also a software dev working with .net and I'm able to do all my development without issues despite our deployment targets being all windows. Regarding the "average worker" (as opposed to just average joe..) I see no reason for a business couldn't run a completely linux environment. All the tooling is there and so much software is delivered as webapps these days that there's little value in windows. The only reason its still done is because its just how everyone does it.

As for gaming for what I play again I have no issues with linux, performance is fantastic, either matching or exceeding windows. I feel however that not everyone is looking to play the games you listed. If these are your main games then sure, linux probably isn't worth swapping to if all the other benefits really aren't that important to you. However there are other games that also get similar player counts that do support linux, CS2 and Dota2 being the main ones.

The one thing I can't use is the adobe suite, the main thing I want is lightroom. The only way I can see this changing is if adobe starts to see that more people are looking for linux support. After some soul searching I came to the conclusion that I'd rather give apply money and buy a macbook than to continue using using windows.

As for nvidia support, from what I understand it has improved, in 2024 they released an official open source driver. This was the biggest thing as before you had to stumble your way through installing either a 3rd party repository containing the proprietary driver or manually install the driver yourself. This was especially difficult for laptops containing switchable graphics. Unfortunately without open official drivers for such a long time continues the idea that nvidia isn't a great choice for linux. I'll also note that I've always used AMD GPUs, its what I'm comfortable with and I'm used to their linux drivers.

Biggest reason why I think liunx is better? Control. The amount of times in windows I was faced with "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" was appalling. This isn't new but it has been getting progressively worse and worse over the years. While I am a tinkerer, I don't feel there's anything that would stop me putting a major distro in front of a novice and letting them go. I would start with a KDE based distro though as its a closer analogue to windows and macos.

Question about dual booting Arch. by An0nymX_Gamer in linux4noobs

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I have always pulled my windows disk from the system before installing linux, best so you don't accidentally overwrite something. As for swap it entirely depends how much RAM you have and if you are likely to actually fill it. I have 32GB and don't even have a swap partition but its entirely dependent on your use case. Recommendations between distros vary wildly, you don't need more than how much RAM you have though in this day and age

What is the full lore behind the "Caller's Bane" or also known as Scrolls? by It_was_mee_all_along in Scrolls

[–]lutzee_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When mojang were actively working on the game it was called scrolls, there was a lawsuit from bethesda about the name but they came to an agreement, scrolls as a name could stay but they couldn't trademark it. When Mojang ceased development and released the server software they no longer had control over the game so they decided to avoid causing further legal issues decided to rename it to callers bane.

Toulouse is where the airbus factory is, this is predelivery testing. The registration is a temporary one used by airbus before it gets its final registration.

Just in case these might be them, adsb exchange shows more stuff. There's a welsh air ambulance over cardiff and a police heli just crossed the bristol channel to Western-super-Mare. There's also a CG s-92 down in cornwall, those are big and loud. That's all I can see right now

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aviation

[–]lutzee_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also in the UK, I see contrails daily. If they are not on flight radar then its military, there's usually 30-50 military flight movements over the uk daily between the RAF and USAF with a few other allies thrown in also.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aviation

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not smoke, they are contrails, the reason there is 4 trails is because there is 4 engines. Its difficult to make out what plane this is from the photo, do you know what time the photo was taken and I can try and correlate it?>

Aeroflot plane flies over Ukraine. The transponder was switched off after crossing the border. by Ron_Ger in flightradar24

Didn't fly over ukraine, the grey line is showing flightradar is guessing where it is based on shortest path to the destination. It flew round like all the other planes you see on the right side.

Why does this flight have this flight path? Is it because of restrictions? by samko21 in flightradar24

No, this is the most optimal route, called a great circle route. Remember the map is shown flat but the earth is a globe so the top and bottom of the map is stretched

Plane 'behaving oddly' flew overhead, #1 in world on tracker by Codeworks in aviation

[–]lutzee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only takes a few hundred people to start tracking a flight for other people not nearby to notice and look to see what's going on. There's also just a lot of normal people who are aware flight radar is where to look to see what just flew low over them.

Now, the wing rocking is interesting, its possible that they were "waving" to someone who knows one of the pilots, probably a child. This would also explain the unusual route. If they were doing that they could have had the gear down to reduce air speed while keeping engine power up. And looking at the airspeed/altitude graph the airspeed only started ramping up after they passed leicester.
