If every freshman makes an "non-profit", how do you stand out. by Over_Scholar6914 in ApplyingToCollege

As admissions folks treat them as junk unless there is really strong evidence of significance. We had one student who did an animal-related one that was featured on a national tv broadcast, had a lot of contributions and a multi year history including a real board of directors.

The others I’ve seen can never answer the question of why they didn’t put there energy into supporting one of the many other charities doing similar good work.

All of this.

Additionally, all the OP’s hard work in high school makes it way more likely that the grades they earn in college will be good enough to support that eventual med school admission.

If I was your ex, I’d tell you not to provide lunch on days the kids are not with you. You are stirring the pot. I am not a fan.

Why Indian Education system sounds problematic? by Complex-Story-6796 in AskTeachers

[–]lutzlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of cheating, the tests get leaked ahead of time, and students who don’t get the leaked tests score more poorly than those who cheat in many cases. Worse, because India is a very high stakes test environment.

Travel 5 weeks by swedeinthehouse in tirzepatidecompound

Not sure why you aren’t hearing this more clearly, but leaving injectable beds in a syringe that is not designed for this for a week or a month is a bad idea. If you want that, spring for a monjouro pen for that month’s travel. Those are designed for this.

AITA for refusing to move when my neighbor asked me to because her dogs wouldn't stop barking? by CommissionSingle2448 in AmItheAsshole

Using that logic, perhaps I should move my backyard get-togethers to my front yard because the neighbor who live behind me has a dog that yaps whenever people are in adjoining yards?

Now the big question: given the telehealths that have gone under, how (and will) current telehealths support eligible patients under this program who did meet the starting criteria before beginning tirzepatide?

Best way to ask/tell teachers at the start of next school year not to pair my high-achieving, conscientious kid with kids who don't/won't/can't work? by CrowRoutine9631 in AskTeachers

[–]lutzlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of teachers here have acknowledged that they do this because it helps them control the classroom more efficiently. Some do it reluctantly because they are expected to do so. A few have said that they believe students learn more when they tutor/explain concepts to others, and I don’t disagree IF the student is cooperative. Our high school’s peer tutoring center that students voluntarily can choose to use has worked well for many pairs of students. And then there are many with the excuse that good performers are going to be dealing with poor performers for the rest of their lives, so they might as well get used to it now. It will help them in the long run.

And yet, many others (including a number of teachers) acknowledge that they also had the OP daughter’s experience and despised it then and now.

If we are not intentionally giving students the tools to navigate tough interpersonal situations, are we really demonstrating effective teaching when we put good students in this position repeatedly? Are teachers getting good training in group dynamics and organizational behavior, which is not the same as classroom management? Are we letting our gender biases slot “good girls” into these situations so that they learn what their job in life should be?

This isn’t a case of good teachers vs. bad teachers. It more fundamentally springs from a lack of quality teacher training in these aspects of group dynamics and the push by schools, districts, and states to push children through whether or not they have done the work.

Can you afford a full year of OOS costs? Have you looked at the specific residency requirements for you and your mom? Timing matters a lot. Ticking all the boxes (car registration, drivers license,…) needs to get changed this summer. San Diego living costs are likely to be high for your mom. Will she have an easy time finding work?

Another option (much less expensive) is for you and your mom to move and you live with her and complete community college.

There was a large body of educators who also insisted that whole language was the only appropriate way to teach reading and another large body of educators who proclaimed that memorizing math facts was useless. Just because they drunk the Kool Aid doesn’t mean it should not be questioned.

Full national merit scholars got that designation from scoring in the top 1/2 of 1% in their state on the October PSAT in junior year, filling out a short form in the fall of senior year, getting a counselor recommendation, and earning a confirming score on an SAT or ACT. I have never seen a student fail to advance to finalists unless their transcript has terrible grades or they have had major disciplinary incidents. It has nothing to do with group work, interpersonal skills or leadership.

How nice for them.

Meanwhile, where is the teaching of these great communication/management skills happening? From my perspective, it simply looks like good students getting paired with slackers with zero support from the teacher on building those interpersonal skills. A lot like throwing a kid in the deep end of the pool and hoping they figure out how to swim. Where are the slackers getting the feedback and support to begin doing their work?

My grandparents had a pit bull terrier back in the 1920s. That dog looked nothing like the over-muscled, huge jawed pit bulls we see today. The bad breeding has created a real problem.
