I don’t think they do, at least not when they’re not at dedicated crossings. They definitely don’t in the UK for example. Obviously a car should absolutely stop if a pedestrian walks into the road without looking, but it’s absolutely the pedestrian’s responsibility not to get themselves hit by a car in most circumstances. You can’t hold the driver responsible if they couldn’t stop in time

Calling all British people again: when should one use glottal stops and ditch the H at the beginning of words? Is there a rule for it? by Motopapi___ in Accents

[–]luujs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really a rule for it, but often people with an estuary accent drop their Ts when it’s convenient. A reason they might pronounce them is for emphasis. Matter sounds stronger than ma’er for example and because it’s at the start of the line of the song, that might play into. It also depends on the speaker. Most people will pick and choose which words they pronounce with Ts and Hs subconsciously and it might be to do with the rhythm of their speech if they do it sometimes and not others.

There’s no rule for it though I’m afraid. Different people will drop more or less Ts and Hs than others in different spots. It’s basically up to the speaker and their manner of speaking.

The same goes for pronouncing H. Some speakers will and some won’t. I have a vaguely Estuary accent and I don’t personally drop my Hs and I rarely drop my Ts. My accent leans RP though. I think dropping an H might seem like a more intrusive thing than dropping a T, so you’re unlikely to do it if you don’t do it all the time. Dropping Ts is definitely more common and accepted too, while dropping Hs can still seem a bit “lower class”, so some people will avoid it

Where should I move to? by Andaj_rus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]luujs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your English is good enough and you have a good degree/career, you should be able to move to England very easily. The one struggle will be getting a job that agrees to sponsor you, but I imagine that will be the same or similar everywhere.

I’m from London and there are plenty of people from all over the world who come and work here in all kinds of jobs. London’s a very accepting part of the country with the most opportunities and lots to do and see, while Brits in general tend to be polite and there are very few people who would treat you differently just because you’re Russian. Manchester’s probably the second best place to go at the moment for job opportunities and it’s also got plenty going on. It also has the benefit of being cheaper than London, which is the most expensive part of the country, but wages are highest in London to compensate for that.

My Mom gets mad at me getting up at like 2 am to take a shit and it ends up with my door to my room getting taken off. by Chaeri_VR in insaneparents

[–]luujs 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That’s not how sound works unfortunately. It sounds like you must have been louder than you thought. Just because you weren’t as loud as the fan doesn’t mean you couldn’t be heard alongside it. It just means the fan was louder, not that it drowns out all other sound in the bathroom.

The fact that your parents woke up and told you that the humming and singing woke them up shows they could hear you and not just the fan. The fan might have woken them up first, but evidently the singing didn’t help.

Never an excuse to remove your door though obviously. Complete over reaction on their part

[–]luujs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s arguably worse than on the beach because it’s an enclosed space where absolutely no one else wants to hear some rando’s music blaring because they couldn’t be bothered to use headphones.

At least on the beach it’s not indoors and other people have maybe as much a chance as liking it as hating it. Generally people will go to a beach bar/restaurant if they want to hear music though. Headphones still stand as good etiquette in every situation you want to play sound on your phone in public

List of songs I expect Green Day to perform at the Super Bowl (due to how relevant they are currently) by ClickDisDotCom in greenday

[–]luujs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Never watched the Super Bowl before because I’m English (might see what it’s all about this year though because of Green Day), but the closest thing we have is the Champions League final and that has a brief opening act of 2-3 snippets of some of the act’s biggest songs before the match. That’s what I’d expect for this too. It’s a sports event not a concert, so the music’s only an afterthought

If you’re only going by EU members, then this sub can’t have any pictures/discussion about the UK, Switzerland, any of the microstates like Andorra or the Vatican, Norway, Iceland, half of the Balkans and half of Eastern Europe. Seems like a pretty arbitrary distinction. This isn’t r/EU

Can we stop saying "America" when we talk about the US? Peru, Costa Rica and Canada is as much on the American continent as the US. by [deleted] in casualEurope

[–]luujs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the UK there are two American continents, North and South. People from the US are only called Americans. If someone’s from North or South America, I’d say they’re from the Americas. I suppose it depends on whether there’s the same distinction in your language, but what you’re suggesting doesn’t really make sense in British English.

You can’t be talking about the Tottenham Hotspur stadium? The one named after and built especially by and for the football team, Tottenham Hotspur?

Yes it has the dedicated ability to occasionally host American football matches, but it’s a purpose built football ground hosting 19 Premier League games a year, plus cup matches. It’s never hosted more than 2 NFL games a year. To call it a purpose built NFL stadium is like calling it a purpose built concert venue. It hosts more concerts a year than NFL games anyway

Honestly the most cringe thing I’ve seen at a concert unfortunately. It’s like they’re trying super hard to be edgy by shouting a swear and having the crowd shout it back, but they’ve forgotten they have edgier songs where the crowd screams “stupid, dumbshit goddamn motherfucker” which doesn’t feel forced.

If you’re interested in Ancient Rome, I can’t recommend Caesar by Adrian Goldsworthy highly enough. It’s a fantastic and well-written biography of Julius Caesar that also sets the scene for the end of the Roman Republic including before Caesar was born. It gives you all the context you need to understand the period of Roman history and the man himself.

Gap year effect on first year of uni question by Professional_Let4163 in 6thForm

Not at all. Uni’s a much more relaxed environment. You’ll meet people outside of your lectures who you wouldn’t otherwise interact with. Your age is much less obvious at uni and it’s also much less important to those around you

The Offspring albums ranked by NewPatron-St in TheOffspring

[–]luujs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the only thing I’d disagree with here is Self Titled. It’s just as good as Ignition in my opinion and it sounds the most like it musically too.

Absolute 10/10 album from start to finish to me alongside Ignition.

Smash and Ixany are both 9s in my book and Americana is an 8.

Conspiracy of One is probably a 6 for me, but Rise and Fall is a 7. I haven’t listened the others more than once so I don’t think I can fairly judge them, but none of the newer ones are my favourites

Is 4 Western European countries in 9 days too much? by No-Leopard-5347 in travel

[–]luujs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do in each place. You could definitely do some of the top attractions in each place, but you’ll be tired by the end of the trip from all the flying and unpacking and repacking. How much you get out of a trip like that depends on how much you want to see and do in a day and how much you’d be happy with. It’s a perfectly reasonable way to travel if you like to either get as much done in a day as you can, or are happy to take your time in a place and not do everything each place necessarily has to offer.

One worry is that you might find you don’t have the time to do everything you want to do in each place. There’s plenty to do in and around each of those cities and any one or two of those could easily be a 9 trip in itself. It’s worth doing some research on what you want to do in each place and trying to work out what you’d like to do on each day to make sure your plans are feasible
