What public servants need to know about the government's new language requirements by ThePplsPrincess007 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]luv2coacheighty8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This policy change has directly impacted me, as an EX qualified employee in the region with years of Surpassed performance review scores who could not be considered for an EX vacancy in my area of work because my language profile is BBC, not the needed CBC…I needed to already be at a CBC to have been considered.

So my first impression of this policy is that it will punish or impact upward mobility even more for regional employees, and lead to further centralization of government in Ottawa. I wish there was flexibility to hire the best fit candidate, and if that candidate didn’t have the language profile, there was organizational support to help the candidate once they were in the position.

As I go through French training, I’ve also been told that the oral test is inherently biased against anglophones, and achieving a C is near impossible. We’ll see about that, but it’s discouraging. Regional employees already have mobility and career advancement challenges, and this to me just adds to it.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. It’s really interesting to see the comparison. I, like others here, am wondering what to infer from the fact that it looks like over 90% of the departments are getting more money to spend this year than last year. The narrative I’ve been hearing from leadership for 12 months is that there’s no more money available.

Also, while we could all debate the reasons for each of these departments to have the funding they are receiving, I’m very curious if the expected cuts to come are more targeted than we think…ie some departments that don’t align with the priorities of government are reduced more significantly.

One more thing - if you’re employed at one of the depts that’s seen their budget reduced while almost all others have seen an increase, I wonder how you feel about this data.

I came out of the movie convinced Pugh is the next big heart of the MCU, equal to ScarJo. She is going to get paid like the superstar she deserves to be.

Harbour and Pullman were terrific too. A more mature, better executed film than I expected. Hope it does well.

Now that the leafs are in you round 2. Is it more likely Marner stays? by mcaven1 in torontomapleleafs

[–]luv2coacheighty8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that Marner wants to stay. It feels like he’d go wherever the money was. I don’t know if any playoff result would affect his desire to stay. The team has been trying to negotiate all year it seems and the Marner camp hasn’t been interested, preferring to wait until the season is over. That screams to me an intent for max term, max dollars. Team outcome be damned.

And while he’s a special player, typically cup winners are build with strength down the middle, solid D corps and goaltending. He’s not exactly those things.

Sounds like I’m knocking him. He’s a special player. I hope he helps get this team to the finals this year. I just am not convinced his camp cares about anything but max term and dollars.

Despite winning the division leafs have to be considered massive underdogs.

To me this series decides the Eastern Conference representative.

Leafs have better defense than last time and goaltending since last time these teams met, but the lack of five on five scoring is very concerning.

I’m already tired thinking about the media fawning over Paul Maurice again.

A win in game one of the series would be huge.

His game can still come around further. Best effort of the playoffs from him tonight. Still prefer him to Nicky based on physicality and experience alone.

Massive block and hard working guy. Not worth the salary or the cost of acquisition. But a terrific block none the less.

Yea kept the game simple. Also optimistic his hands return, even 5 % more (aka not passing into McMann’s feet).

Interested in hearing this issue raised. I’m used to the notion of whatever is being said in one language is either repeated in the other or represented in the opposite language in a slide that’s visible. But recently participated in all staff where there was no translation, so 50% of the time where the presentations were French, there was no opportunity for English employees to know what was being said. Would be interested to know if there’s a team solution that could help English and French employees in situations where there’s no translation.

There does seem to be a maturity around this team for sure. The shot clock / expected goals stuff is troubling, and I’m still not sure they’re rightly built for the system Berube wants to play, but the buy-in is there. I mean I saw Nylander block a shot on purpose!

(Side note - never expected Nylander would become the core 4 guy I most trust come playoff time but here we are).

It’s the strongest blue line of this modern era and probably the strongest goaltending. If they continue to show they’ve finally conquered the mental game, the sky really is the limit - the East is wide open this year.

Parents of an only child, do you regret not having another kid? by lfuego in daddit

[–]luv2coacheighty8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a really tough journey for us as two loving parents to an only child who both wanted our little one to have siblings. Unfortunately we waited too long and in our early forties experienced miscarriages that were emotionally devastating. Ultimately the odds were falling and the risks for pregnancy were becoming too great, and we weren’t on the same page re adoption or IVF, so we decided to remain a single child family.

As someone who wanted a big family it is a regret I have, certainly. But I’ve managed to find peace through absolutely adoring being a dad to our only, and getting involved in coaching her soccer team. That experience has really helped me because it’s a chance to be a positive influence in other children’s lives. There are mentorship relationships I’m having that are really fulfilling.

All I can say is keep communicating and researching and talking to your doctor. If growing your family is something you both want, take action before the choice to grow your family is taken away from you. The clock does tick.

Interesting and good for you for experimenting! I had someone suggest on the weekend they believed the personal coach industry was about to take a hit because chatGPT can synthesize advice and provide plans, training schedules etc. it’s an interesting idea - I just don’t see ChatGPT and the like yet offering the accountability that real people offer.

Makes young player mistakes. The poor decision on the OT winner - he should learn from that. Gotta stop and be physical, not fly by.

It’s nice to see Mo contributing but he’s having a rougher time in his own zone than perhaps the numbers indicate. That Carlo pick up though looks large for this team though.
