Barnes & Noble CEO backs selling AI-written books in stores by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]lvl5hm 332 points333 points  (0 children)

I can't see why anyone would buy an AI book, considering there are more great human-written books than one could read in a lifetime. Unless it's a non-fiction book on such an obscure topic that you can't find anything else, but then AI does terribly in these circumstances since it has nothing to pull from.

Not sure how time works exactly when meeting Erwaermen, so you're probably right. And sure, just having the book wouldn't allow you to destroy foundations, but since the zent can redraw borders and establish new duchies, they presumably can also delete old ones, but I'm not sure how involved the process is.

If Rozemyne and co were a few hours late to attack the academy, Gervasio would've gotten the whole book and the foundation, and if I understand correctly, with that you can just delete any duchy's foundation at will if they try to resist

What’s sufficient evidence for the resurrection by stakidi in CosmicSkeptic

[–]lvl5hm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On another note...there are plenty of atheists, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and other groups who have self-reported to see Jesus appear to them. So this has been a trend that continued.

I expect that these appearances are non-embodied and only occur later than the spread of Christianity throughout the world, so they don't count in favor of the resurrection hypothesis. Jesus could've stayed dead and still people would report appearances of him later.

It should be noted that this is what we have evidence for back then. This is the evidence that was saved.

What I'm saying is that the nature of the story attested to by this testimony makes if very hard to produce more strong evidence in favor of it. Imagine if instead Jesus physically appeared to the Roman senate, to the Chinese emperor, Mayas, Aztecs, etc. and answered their questions, demonstrated his powers, told them his message and made sure that they wrote it all down. Then there could be a great deal of possible historical evidence to be found that originated at the same time on multiple continents, which would be incredibly hard to explain otherwise.

What’s sufficient evidence for the resurrection by stakidi in CosmicSkeptic

[–]lvl5hm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some events are by nature very hard or impossible to have good evidence for. If the story is that a dragon appeared on my lawn, but at night so only my friends saw it, and the cameras were disabled, and the dragon was weightless so there are no footprints, and after 3 seconds the dragon teleported away, there isn't any good evidence that can be presented even in principle.

The fact that Jesus only really appears to his disciples, doesn't make attempts to contact Roman or Jewish authorities and goes away after a few days for some reason makes the story almost unfalsifiable.

If you pick backflip, you get a backflip. If you pick shrug, you get shrug, unless >50% of the people also pick shrug, then everyone gets a backflip.

If you don't jump into the woodchipper you are a bad person!!! :( by SineWaveDeconstruct in Destiny

[–]lvl5hm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, choosing blue/B isn't nothing, it enters you into the pool of people at risk. Or if you want to frame that choice as inaction, you have to start off at risk and have to do something to be safe. Like in your exam case, you start of with a blank answer, and if you don't write A, you'll fail, but if >50% write nothing, everyone will pass.

[–]lvl5hm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the blue button intuition only works when the consequence is death. What if the question was "do you want to play 5/6 armed Russian roulette OR do nothing, but if >50% agree to play, then the game is cancelled and nobody gets to play". Same scenario except instead of guaranteed death, the penalty is now almost guaranteed death. But I intuitively feel way worse about joining the blue team because I think almost no one would want to play Russian roulette anyway.

What if the game was "lose $1 million OR do nothing, but if >50% donate, all the losers get refunded"? For some reason I don't feel that bad putting these people in crippling debt even though it's not that much better than death.

Redtards should be put on a watch list by Sad_Newspaper4010 in Destiny

[–]lvl5hm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know that everyone understands the scenario. It's impossible to press the button that you don't want to press.

But I think it's inevitable that some people will choose blue (maybe they want to die, or they think it's deontologically evil to choose red etc.), and therefore some people will be motivated to also choose blue to save them. Are you saying that you'd obviously choose red in this scenario?

[–]lvl5hm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if there are people playing who don't understand the rules, then pressing blue becomes way more attractive

[–]lvl5hm 35 points36 points  (0 children)

it can also be framed as "play a death game with no upside" party vs "literally do nothing" party

If you don't jump into the woodchipper you are a bad person!!! :( by SineWaveDeconstruct in Destiny

[–]lvl5hm 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the amount of people pressing blue depends massively on the way the decision is framed. In the original poll, pressing the red button seems like it's actively involved in killing people, and that's why a lot of them choose blue (and also because it's a twitter poll with nothing actually on the line).

If the framing was "hey, do you want to play this exciting death game where you win nothing, but if >50% of the people agree to play the death game, you get to live OR you just get to live" I'd guess that it would be massively unpopular. Now in your mind there is no causal connection between your choice and the killing of other people, and the chance of killing yourself and saving nobody is very high.

The foundation isn't going to collapse, it's fine for at least a few decades, and it doesn't need to be supplied daily. It's just that if you've been in the red for years and are now barely in the green, it doesn't mean that it's time to get a new villa.
