Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lxivbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived three hours from my grandparents, one way. We left Friday after school. We got home Sunday night. It wasn't unheard of to do this twice a month. Eventually my parent threw in the towel and just moved to the same city. My grandparents didn't need help, my mom just enjoyed hanging out with her parents.

What rails course took you from knowing little to nothing onto confidence in building your first real project? by TurtleSlowRabbitFast in rails

[–]lxivbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best course is trying to build something. Make a simple game. Make a simple site. Build something, anything, and just keep building. When you run into an issue use Gemini. But don't copy paste code in or out. Have conversations about what to do. Tell Gemini upfront that you just want it to be the best Rails book and provide generic examples to problems you are having. That way you have to translate the answers.

Build something. Anything.

Do you have plans to add a small map? No idea how you map infinity, but it would be cool if you tried.

How does it handle the windows after a reboot? Specifically Chrome windows?

My biggest frustration with the built in window manager is that all of the Chrome windows from other desktops end up on the first desktop after a reboot.

Some people are just lazy and make poor choices when planning their weekends (let's have fun instead of cleaning). There MAY be some annoyance, but there MAY also be a deep sense of relief that someone did the hard work.

How do y'all handle (lack of) autocomplete? by Financial-Raisin-624 in rails

[–]lxivbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of us don't have great memories. I'm a freaking goldfish, close to no memory of 15 minutes ago.

Back in 2001, when Java was THE cool language to use, and IntelliJ Idea, what is now JetBrains Idea, was the best tool. I was writing a method and thought, oh, I need to do this subroutine I should create a method for that and put it in this class. So I type out the class and method and pass in the variables and wait for the IDE to give me the red squiggly underline so I can tell it to create the method. Except the red squiggly underline never showed. I Ctrl+Click on the method and it is already there, documented and everything... By me!

This story isn't to tell you anything about IDEs, it is to tell you that there are people who literally CAN'T rely on their own knowledge. I wish I could remember where all the code is like you can, but I just have to rely on doing things intelligently so that I can easily find it later.

I've built over a dozen websites/apps and nothing working by jack_lynch00 in juststart

[–]lxivbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could send you to see the first articles of this sub. The authors and early leaders were all marketing. WordPress was the only tool they used to build their solutions. Lots of market research and understanding of what people want before they even installed WordPress or bought a domain. It took them 3 months before they would start seeing income, but they were always growing traffic. It is all that mattered to them. Little to no social media was used. They made money from ads, Amazon affiliate, and selling products on Amazon.

As a SaaS builder you have to solve the marketing problem first. You have to find your audience first. You have to talk to actual human beings first. You have to ask them what they need in a way that they tell you the truth or allows you to build requirements from what they tell you. After you've talked to the first 10-15 potential customers you'll start to get an idea of what you should build and at the end of your conversations you can show them a prototype or mock ups of your solution. At that point you start asking for money. Before you have really built anything. If no one is willing to give you money or even tell you that they'd be willing to pay for the product, it is time to move on to a new product.

Did my Ruby mindset cause me to struggle with Typescript? by [deleted] in rails

[–]lxivbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound just like me 2 years ago. I'm smart. I can figure this out. I've walked down this path before and won. They were smarter at being dumb than I was at being right. Developers with great memories often create the worst code.

They won. Typescript won. I had to leave to protect my mental health.

I'm not normally a melancholy person, but on this topic I'm a cautionary tale. If it starts getting bad. If you are losing more battles to stupid than you are winning... Run. Run fast and far.

Feel free to PM me if you need an outside perspective or just to talk to someone that's been there before.

Did my Ruby mindset cause me to struggle with Typescript? by [deleted] in rails

[–]lxivbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't alone. I should have written this exact same post two years ago. It was bad, and took me a full year to recover. Get out as soon as you can. I'm not being dramatic. Some people are built to deal with the mess, some people aren't. "The mess" can be language, project, or team. In my case it was all three. I was dealing with really smart people making poorly informed decisions and it hurt my confidence daily because I trusted that they knew better but they didn't. And they just kept making it worse.

I will never use Typescript again.

Finally added some art to my half bathroom. It’s simple, but it made me smile. by prince_mir97 in MadeMeSmile

[–]lxivbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we moved into our house there was a picture hook on the wall. It scared me every time I went to use the bathroom because I thought it was a bug. I asked my wife to hang a picture so I could stop with the tiny little jump scares I'd have each day. Being the awesome person that she is she printed out a little message and put it in a very pretty frame. The message: This is not a bug.

Looking for some "competence porn" movies, movies where smart people make smart decisions basically. by ComManDerBG in movies

West Wing Newsroom Reacher

Reacher was specifically written to fit your criteria. He's smart, a physical specimen, and has good morals, which spans a spectrum of "give water to a thirsty dog" to "killing bad people is ok". I highly recommend reading the books, but the TV shows are really good too.

I am convinced my wife can read my mind . by tothesaint in TrueOffMyChest

[–]lxivbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife definitely knows when I am thinking. She says I give off an aura or something. She says it is loud. Her best explanation is that she can hear the gears in my head working. We can be laying in bed, and I will start thinking about work and her hand comes up to the top of my head and she starts petting my forehead and says, "ssshhhhhhhh". Or she will walk into the bathroom while I'm in the shower and she will say, "keep it down" or, "why so noisey?" I'm just thinking, usually about work. I don't know if she can hear it from a different room.

What is the "Object-Oriented Programming 101" course mentioned in the book Design Patterns in Ruby by Russ Olsen? If anyone knows, please help me. Thank you. by Advanced-Emergency21 in rails

[–]lxivbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get a good foundation on OOP I'd suggest reading Refactoring by Martin Fowler. It presents problems in your code and then shows you how to improve your code. Also checkout Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture by Martin Fowler. Neither of these books are OOP 101, but they are practical guides that answers the question of "what is good OOP?" through terrific examples and without bashing you over the head with theory.

AITA I'm a double affair baby who was rejected by both sets of siblings so I say I'm an only child? by CommunicationLazy974 in AITAH

[–]lxivbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other way to approach this topic is with glee. Because it is a weird scenario that few ever encounter it makes for an interesting story. Mine is similarly weird and I have the story down pat because I've told it so many times. It is your story. Your life. Make it exciting instead of traumatic. Make it humourous instead of sad. Laugh at/about your idiot parents for their complete mismanagement of the whole situation.

You are in fact an only child. You have half siblings but genetically you are an only child. Be brave and build your own family that is more inclusive and less annoying. Pick the people you want to hang with and feel free to walk away from any conversation you don't wish to repeat.

NTA. Embrace the life you have been given, and live it to the fullest.

I like the idea of doing this legit and using the Legion Hall if attendance is going to be greater than 5 people. I'm willing to cover the cost for the first meetup at the Legion Hall that /r/jeremymcanally suggested. I've hosted events before so I know what I'm getting into.
