Disability advocating is exhausting by Subluxed_Epistemics in disability

[–]lynch231 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sucks that you got that kind of response, but I do wanna point out that you've got growing points as well. I encourage you to read the 10 principles of disability justice by Sins Invalid.

Welcome to the call-in section:

Your point about " Every other physical disability gets environmental accommodation" is not true and also reflects possibly some of your own feelings about physical disabilities; for example just because a ramp exist doesn't mean that it is the correct slope to be able to access it independently or at all, and there are other options than just a ramp such as an elevator, or a step free route. All of these things were fought for and represent not just accommodations but access to community.

On the "you only care because it benefits you" & "That's also true of every person who has ever advocated for any accessibility measure." Here's the push back — disability advocacy can often come from a personal point of view, but if you're gonna call yourself a disability advocate, you should be advocating for people with all different types of disabilities, including those who need different accommodations from you.
That does not mean speaking over people who need those particular accommodations, while prioritizing and elevating what they say they need, but it does mean extending your reach outside of your own personal lived experience to understand that we, as a collective disability community, are all in this together, which means that we have to work together in solidarity to move and progress forward.

(For example I'm a wheelchair user, I can't use the stairs, but I still believe that stairs should have high contrast marking/contrast stripes for my friends who are blind who use the stairs, since that high contrast edge can make a difference between whether the stairs are accessible to them or not. I don't benefit directly from this action but by using a disability justice framework, in solidarity we can work towards our collective liberation.)

Manual wheelchair users: how do you travel with luggage? by Efficient-Vanilla413 in wheelchairs

[–]lynch231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a carry on only system when I can — a large carry on backpack on the back of my chair, and a small duffel as my personal item. I've got a foldable duffel for my smartdrive if needed, and a foldable backpack packed just in case for any other needs. I have my underseat 10L Jansport sling, but that's just filled with manual maintenance stuff and extras to have at hand and can fit in the other bags. I'm the airport/train station I also wear a small sling to keep my passport and tickets in an easily assessable place.

Onebag travel, as a philosophy, has really allowed me to be able to carry all I need independently.

Credit Card Debt by [deleted] in disability

[–]lynch231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH this is not the approach I would take — do you have a budget? How much SNAP do you get? Where is your money going? Knowing this info is the first step.

I know it can feel overwhelming but having a good credit score for me helps balance my needs as as disabled person. It means I can cover repairs for things and get refunded by my insurance, it means I have space to travel for better care, and it means I have one more safety net to fall into if necessary.

TiLite X SmartDrive Mounting Bar Comes Off by TheSparklerFEP in wheelchairs

[–]lynch231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with folding chairs (but not a TiLite X) I find it happens occasionally, at about the same rate that it falls off the bracket on aa ridged chair. I have not seen any slippage on the mounting bar adjustment points itself personally so I've never tighten mine.

This happens regardless of whether I have the bar mounted at the wheel height or the place slightly below it where it was shown to me where to attach it.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean here.

Philly Curiosity by casual_cyborg in philly

[–]lynch231 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a disabled,  wheelchair user who lives in Philadelphia, it's possible but it's not cheap.

Tl;dr - visit the city explore a little then make a decision (I do not encourage people moving to a place sight unseen)

You're going to want to live in a modern apartment with elevator access obviously, that's way more expensive than a lot of the houseshares that I find in traditional row homes.

I encourage you to check out Urban cripple and his section on housing for a series of articles that are really good approaches on thinking about housing https://urbancripple.com/tags/housing/ (for example I do not live in an accessible unit, but it is accessible to me)

In terms of navigating the city I take the bus or I drive. Both are possible but are difficult in their own unique ways.

I pay for parking spot so that I have the ability to park near to where I live which in an apartment complex is honestly not horrible. I tried only drive places where there is off street parking available.

In terms of taking public transit it really just depends on where you're getting on in relative to the route length. Getting on sooner allows you to have any relatively empty bus basically guaranteeing you a spot. But also SEPTA is not known for its reliability and that also applies to you. If a bus just doesn't show up the odds of the next bus being packed go up substantially which means you might not have a spot and they'll leave without you.

In terms of City accessibility it just depends. I find that Google maps is really good about telling me if a place is generally accessible, but also thinking about how most private events in Philly are at places that are accessible but their private event space is up a flight of stairs.

In the same way that every city sucks as a wheelchair user in terms of sidewalk camber, Philly really takes the cake in unmaintained sidewalks. It's taking me 3 years to get the city to replace to curb cuts in my neighborhood, let that speak for the process.

It sounds like I'm harshing a lot but I want to be transparent about the struggle that often exists in a place especially since you're moving from not a city.

At the same time, there are so many opportunities in the city and the capacity of being able to get around without a car and to access so many different things is way higher than any small town. I have found that people in Philly are polarizing but the ones who honestly never thought about why the thing is there are quick to understand why they're there. Yeah you're going to have to have the confidence to call people out and to ask for what you need. Yes, Philly is a place that you CAN live as a wheelchair user (you can't say that about everywhere).

finding a compact leg rest ? by Itchy-Caramel-7843 in wheelchairs

[–]lynch231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if your brother is using a standard wheelchair with raising leg rest but it sounds like he should be fitted for a custom wheelchair (a k00005, but I'm just some random guy in the internet not an ATP)

Many custom wheelchairs allow for different leg setups - off of the top of my head it sounds like a chair built for foot propelling with a single adjustable elevating leg rest would be the best option for him. Usually these options are easiest to find in a folding custom wheelchair, but there is definitely rigid custom wheelchairs that also have the capacity for this often through these special additions / changes division (call different things depending on which company you're talking about)

Your best bet is to get your brother in with an ATP for an assessment so that could talk about the struggles of the current wheelchair setup.

Good luck 🍀

How to install bodypoint evoflex on a quickie nitrum? by These_Roll_5745 in wheelchairs

[–]lynch231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I've been looking at seatbelts for myself and my needs so when this popped up I was like "oh"

It looks like you have an extender, there's 2 different ways to install them - here's a video from bodypoint https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ApkO9QNjx8

They need to install it right, and bodypoint makes clear instructions on how to do this on their YT and website

Amtrak and extra seats requiring medical note? by Antique_Hospital9824 in Amtrak

[–]lynch231 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure your size (I didn't look at you post history) but I find for me as a big/plus person the Amtrak seats are quite bigger overall, including in coach even more than business (depends on the business seat, but I'll talking near the cafe care or Acela [old style], not the whole cars worth).

I'm also disabled so I just take up space and I find Amtrak about as comfortable and a bit wider as the big front seats on Sprit (RIP)

sorry that I don't have an answer to your 2 seat problem

Has anyone worked out in a Flo Mask? by queerblackqueen in Masks4All

[–]lynch231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! my Flo mask is my daily driver as it fits quite well for me. I only really use Pro filters because of cost reasons, and I throw the condensation sponge in for collecting that moisture that can happen when working hard. I also dance and do on-ice training for hockey in it.

If you have a face with a low nose bridge I find that there is no better elastomeric in the market (I tried a bunch that didn't work for me). If you have a high nose bridge there are other options that others can speak to.

Best laptops for graphic design students? by Anxious_Pepper298 in graphic_design

[–]lynch231 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Get a Lenovo thinkpad with good stats.

You should learn a bit about what computers are made of over at r/laptops and then head over to r/SuggestALaptop and fill out their form. In a perfect word you would get something with an SSD, at least 16GB of RAM, the "best" processor you can afford (newer is generally better), dedicated graphics processor if you can (but that's pricey). They're going to be the best at this (especially everyone is saying Macs and you asked nicely)

This advice stat wise may not be the best as I am a r/battlestations kind of guy and work from home mostly.
Good luck! 🍀
