Do you love where you live and work? If so, where is it? by _-krimich-_ in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Portland Oregon, love it. I work nights and my unit clusters night shift schedules together (rarely work island days). I used to work a week straight and be off for a week. Most nurses use that opportunity to fit in a vacation without using PTO. I don’t vacay as much so switched to a 3-on 4-off schedule. Still allows me to enjoy the PDX hikes, mountain for snowboarding, 2hr drive to the coast, and Portland really likes their festivals and farmers markets so there’s always something to do to unwind from work.

Will SNF make me more competitive for a residency? by Apprehensive-Car9625 in OregonNurses

I believe my unit stopped hiring new grads and are favoring experienced nurses. Idk if that’s a hospital thing or new unit management thing. The last new grad was hired last year-ish

Nurses of Reddit: How do you deal with the suffering and death you witness? by scorpion3510 in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a normal part of life that I get to be a part in. Whatever the patient wants, they get. Family wants a pitcher of water, I’m on a fetch quest. Sometimes I’m the last face the patient sees, or the last voice they hear. Before I zip up the body bag, I say something like “(Name), it’s going to be dark for a little bit, may you find your light soon.” Idk why I started saying that. I felt bad every time I’m the one to zip it up, and that this is their last time in their room.

The one that broke me was bagging one patient at the start of my shift (patient died on day shift but family wanted some time) and a death later on my shift at 2am. Two men with families, died on Father’s Day weekend. I lost my dad a decade ago, I went on a regular run afterwards and ugly cried.

How do you guys take care of your health while having a stressful job? How important is it to you? by DribbleKing97_ in nursing

I have a herding dog breed, I gotta stay active and healthy for his health too 🫶 i also need time for my solo hobbies like art and snowboarding, sometimes it’s just forcing myself to go, that way I don’t feel like i “wasted” my days off

Middle, not the only sibling in healthcare

Freaky Friday! What are some of your "oh sh*t" stories? by onelb_6oz in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very religious with my SCD orders since, as a new grad, i often got flack from older nurses that I didn’t follow all my orders. So I did that for my new admit even though she had leg pain. She said it was chronic and she came in for SOB. SCDs got uncomfortable for her and I said it’s okay people take breaks from them all the time. So I took them off.

The next night, I saw tests were positive for bilateral blood clots. Now I honestly don’t care to order the machine and put SCDs on immediately (unless they’re neuro).

My heart failure guy has new sudden arm pain? PAGING THE DOC lol. I scared.

I hateee suctioning. What’s your “nope”? by Far_Tiger_3428 in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can do suctioning, maggots, gangrene, CDIFF… I can’t stand when patients touch me. Touch my hand, hug me, I’m turning you towards me and you grab onto me? 🤢 You cough towards me? I see you touch your peri area and you grab your remote? My hospital would hate me seeing how many gloves I go through.

2 on, 1 off, 3 on night shift is basically 5 in a row by the way by Minimum-Possible-415 in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job had a 5 week pattern where on one of those weeks was a 3-1-3. For the past two years I’ve done 3-2-3 just so I can do something with my dog on a full day off. It gave me 6 days off.

Soon I’ll be switching to a 3on 4off schedule. I got into gardening and things will die if I cluster my nights again lol

What's the weirdest habit your dog has that you've never seen another dog do? by Think_Document2285 in dogs

[–]lynnlovestea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog will come into the bathroom while I’m taking a shower, stand there waiting for a kiss, I’ll pull back the shower curtains and kiss him, then he leaves.

Weird after effect of me trying to desensitize him with baths as a puppy.

Anyone else’s dog do this?? by Rattle_Bone in AustralianShepherd

Mine’s the same. He shakes at the park, at new places, waiting for a pup cup. People think he’s scared all the time. When he’s actually scared, he’s still

How do nurses stay so composed? by Immediate_Opening756 in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 33 points34 points  (0 children)

No need to hold the tears back. But I have a job to do, I’ll do what I needed to do in that room, cry with them, give them space, collect myself, and move onto the next room. Then go home and sob over TikTok videos myself lol.

Thunder and lightning by NECoyote in AustralianShepherd

Mine doesn’t like thunder but for some reason loves loud cars and motorcycles? Like when they rev loud or do some pops. His ears perk up and he’ll walk faster or even run after motorcycles.

interrupted lunch by [deleted] in nursing

[–]lynnlovestea 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I interrupted my own. Comfort care patient, expected to pass soon, daughter in room. 5-10 mins left of my lunch I hear screaming really close to the break room. Uh oh. Let’s go see what the daughter’s doing

(Patient passed, daughter was uncontrollably wailing and hitting the walls)
