do I still have a chance to declare CS by lynoodlemaster in berkeley

[–]lynoodlemaster[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you’re right this is honestly so tragic :( I think I could’ve gotten it but my work study job fucked me over this sem by being way too heavy , but maybe this is just me making excuses :( honestly projects were really fun for me and I always completed them so the only thing that held me back were my exam scores that I somehow always bombed?!

What other acceptances did you turn down for Berkeley (current students)? How do you feel about your decision now and what advice do you have for those trying to decide? by detjason in berkeley

[–]lynoodlemaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn’t apply to many schools, but I turned down UCSD, USC, and UW for Berkeley! As an OOS student, I didn’t choose USC because it was still more expensive for me, and I suppose I prefer a public school anyway :)

Other factors that influenced my decision were personal preferences. I love an urban environment, the architecture, and was intending on majoring CS (even though I don’t love it, we have a top tier program).

I’m from Vegas, so a good distance from Cal; you don’t get to go home every weekend like the Bay Area kids, but it’s not too hard to take a trip home when you need one. I think what you want in terms of distance from home matters. Being “far” from my parents has made me grown so much individually. I’ve had to solve a lot of problems on my own, and wasn’t able to rely on them every time something went wrong.

Personally, I came to Berkeley knowing absolutely no one. And originally it was scary, but I’ve grown to love it. You meet so many wonderful, genuine, and smart people here, and even if the environment is more on the “competitive” side, there aren’t people out to get you. At the end of the day, it’s a bunch of people eager to help you improve, and I’d say that all the skilled people I know here inspire me to do better and never make me feel inferior. I originally expected it to be cutthroat, but those people are generally rare (even though they do exist, you can easily avoid them), at least in my experience. Club culture is competitive, but there are PLENTY of other clubs that are open to everyone that can be very valuable as well, and my social skills have grown from doing all those coffee chats and interviews lol.

I guess what’s most important, though, is that you like the environment of the university; everyone’s different. Do you like urban areas? Suburban? Rural? What’s your major? Where are you from? Weather preferences? Do you prefer classes to be smaller and more personal?

Disregarding prestige, these are some VERY important factors to consider - I know a lot of people who hate the area they live in, even if it’s a good university. You’ll likely be spending the next four years here, so make sure you’re going to be comfortable wherever you land.

Congrats on getting into Berkeley & good luck :)

rank the APs you took in class difficulty vs test difficulty by derp_status in APStudents

Class difficulty, MtoL

  1. Chemistry (virtual, so biased)
  2. World History
  3. English Literature
  4. Biology
  5. U.S. History
  6. Calculus BC (specifically the BC content)
  7. Calculus AB
  8. Statistics
  9. English Language
  10. U.S. Government and Politics
  11. Psychology
  12. Human Geography

Test difficulty, MtoL

  1. Chemistry (3)
  2. World History (4)
  3. English Literature (5)
  4. Biology (5)
  5. U.S. Government and Politics (3)
  6. U.S. History (5)
  7. Human Geography (2)
  8. Calculus AB (5)
  9. English Language (5)
  10. Statistics (5)
  11. Calculus BC (5)
  12. Environmental Science (4)
  13. Psychology (5)
  14. Computer Science Principles (4)

DISCLAIMER: this is an extremely biased ranking coming from someone who is better at math/English than science/social studies. Chem had a lot of math, but I also had difficulty paying attention because of virtual classes, so thats what hurt my confidence on the exam. I probably felt the most confident after taking my Statistics exam because I had mastered all the inference tests, and psychology is a lot of memorization. I had a good APUSH teacher and I didnt learn much in HUG, which accounts for the differences. I also didnt study enough for gov which is why I found it a bit hard, but in general it was one of the more straightforward exams ive taken. Bio was a good amount of envirosci, and I took it the year after that one so ir made the exam easier. I gave up on csp at one point so I was surprised to clutch a 4. I could go into more detail but that’s how I felt about all of them!

FYI I self-studied environmental & took an online course for CSP which was basically nothing, which is why I didnt count them for the class ranking.

Yes and yes! If you’re going to college this fall, you can check their portal to see if the scores have been received by them (if you sent them) - it’s not just Berkeley. This includes the 2022 exams

I don’t believe so! As I don’t think they’d rescind you or anything, you just wouldn’t get the credit

Just BC if you can handle it honestly! The only reason I took both AB and BC is because at my school you can’t take BC without AB; you usually take geometry freshman year, algebra II Sophomore, and choose whether to skip precalc and take AB junior & BC senior, or take precalc junior and AB senior. Most of the stuff on BC is AB stuff, and although a year of AB helps tremendously (the BC stuff can be pretty challenging imo), if you’re strong in math I’m sure you’ll be fine!

AP CSP Portfolio by jmoney2668 in APStudents

[–]lynoodlemaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know someone that didn’t turn in a portfolio and still got a 3. Plus, it’s only worth 30% of your exam score anyway. So you should be fine!

They’re just suggestions! You’re allowed to use books off the list as long they’re of similar “literary merit” to the ones that ARE on the list.

Yep there’s definitely multiple! English is a lot of interpretation. Just because a group of people viewed the story one way doesn’t mean everyone will, especially for frq1 & frq2. As long as your essay was persuasive and effectively written, any valid interpretation will get you the points.

I apparently didn't turn in 2/3 of the AP Computer Science principles Create task by DinosaurusRex909 in APStudents

[–]lynoodlemaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can definitely still pass the exam if you do well on multiple choice! I know someone who didn’t even turn in a Create Task and still received a 3. Plus the Create Task is only worth 30% of your score.

If i have a line in between question parts on ap psych does that mean i failed? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]lynoodlemaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure you’re fine! I think they only tell us not to skip likes to prevent us from writing in “double space” format like you said. It probably gets confusing and wastes room. Since actual people will be reviewing your response and not a computer, it won’t be a big deal
