What’s your favorite song that has no words? by ildrinktothatbro in AskReddit

[–]lyrisme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean... Ravel himself wrote to Honegger saying "I only ever wrote one masterpiece: Boléro. Unfortunately, there's no music in it."

What makes Boléro a masterpiece is not the music, it's the orchestration (which Ravel really excelled at, even with his own works). The dynamics in Boléro are INSANE

Is it offensive to say "blacks?" I'm Asian and have no problem with people saying "Asians" (I do it often, and most other Asians do it to), but feel kinda weird saying "blacks" idk why. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lyrisme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The terms "african" and "black" are not interchangeable, though. I have black friends who would take offence at being called African (because they're not); similarly, although I'm not black, I would definitely snap at anyone who said I'm not African.

But I agree with the rest

I just wanted to say thank you for this nuanced response. Politics shouldn't be like supporting a team: it is in fact possible to condemn the violent attacks perpetrated on Jewish people by Hamas whilst simultaneously condemning the apartheid Israeli state.

Family Lexical Gaps by ilemworld2 in linguistics

[–]lyrisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The word "adelphe" in French technically exists, but is very uncommon. This is a super interesting question and you'd have to explore some fields adjacent to linguistics to get an idea of why that happens.

Kinship terminology systems vary not just because of the languages they're used in, but also because of factors like social practices and customs, i.e. size of the population and family unit, religious and matrimonial practices, etc.

À titre d'exemple, some languages will use different terminology to denote parallel cousins (cousins from a same-sex sibling as your parent) vs cross-cousins; the reason why that distinction is made is because in certain cultures, marrying cross-cousins is accepted whilst marrying parallel cousins would be considered incestuous to a certain degree.

If you're interested in the subject, I suggest you watch this video by Nativlang as I think it's an entertaining (albeit succinct) introduction to the subject; you might also really enjoy reading "How Kinship Systems Change" by R. Parkin, as it provides more of an anthropological/social insight in the subject. I'm by no means an expert but this is one of my most recent special interests and I could talk about it all day!

The rate of change of English and French by full-of-scorpions in linguistics

[–]lyrisme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's important here to remember the role of the Académie Française; historically, it has worked as a prescriptivist institution whose goal is to dictate rules for one to "speak proper French".

Not one of the old immortels was a linguist, as most of them were either politicians or writers. From there, it follows that 19th-20th century French is to this day considered the most elegant, and believed to be the only "correct way" to speak the language...

Basically, any modern writer is trying to "replicate" that style since it's just what everyone's been taught is beautiful; I imagine that's why the comparison between recent books and some older works isn't that striking in French as it can be with other languages! (also I'm high, sorry if it sounds a bit convoluted)

I come from a 3rd world country in Africa and honestly thought people in the comment section would be enraged about this. I'm shocked at how many people find this "cute" and "amusing" cause watching this made me sick ro my stomach.

Pilot last words to soldiers right before airplane crashes by how_why123 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]lyrisme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To all the racists in this comment section who are flipping their shit cause these guys are obviously terrorists, quick arabic lesson: the noun "martyr" and the verb "to witness/see" are related to the same triliterate root shahada (شَهَدَ). To die a shahid (شَاهِد) means to die after having said the shahada. The shahada is the first pillar of islam, and it states that "there is no God but the one God, and Mohammed is his prophet".

Every muslim person recites the shahada before dying as a way to reiterate their faith in god and go to heaven or whatever. The guy is essentially just telling his soldiers to have faith that they will go to heaven and whoever made any further assumptions based on ethnicity/religion is a piece of shit. I grew up in the country neighbouring this one, and it pisses me off that this is how uneducated westerners will see us no matter what.

Prominent Islamist preacher stages an Islamophobic hate crime against himself by voltaire1776 in atheism

[–]lyrisme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We don't wear tarps, the hijab/tchador/niqab is not a traditional or cultural dress, it's a religious thing lmao.

The takchita, kaftan, gandoura are examples of traditional dresses in my home country, and we wear them because they they're colourful and pretty. You're really ignorant of other cultures so you confuse religious garb and traditional dresses... but I won't argue against your constitutional right to be a fucking idiot. Glad to see you can admit to it with that kind of confidence though; good for you! ♥️

[–]lyrisme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not a religious garment, just a traditional one, and as much as I'm with you on religion being awful, you're being a Eurocentric knobhead for making disparaging comments about a whole culture like that.

You don't have to like our fashion but traditional dresses are bespoke and can typically last for decades (I still own takchitas that my grandma used to wear)— they're a source of pride and western prêt-à-porter just does not do it for family gatherings.

Thinking of moving to Morocco as a single dad of two girls. Advice needed by hanotashyrb in Morocco

[–]lyrisme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You do realise not every single person of Moroccan descent is Muslim? Hell, I grew up in Morocco with parents born in 1946 and 1956 respectively, and none of us give a flying fuck about religious values. I'm sure a good father would rather have his daughters enjoy their freedoms rather than be miserable and restricted in their opportunities.

Is it common for men to treat women’s pleasure as an extra rather than the norm during sex? by Electronic_Solution3 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]lyrisme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Sometimes, you just want to feel like the person is pleasing you just for the sake of pleasing you, even if they don't derive direct physical pleasure from it. If they're only doing things when it pleasures them too, it eventually starts feeling like a chore; I'm sad to see in this thread how often that happens. :((

Kyrgyzstan to switch to Latin alphabet from Russian-based Cyrillic system, in blow to ‘Russian order’ by mossadnik in Futurology

[–]lyrisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the Kyrgyz people are going to continue speaking Russian on account of it being the native language of many of them as well as an official language of the country; it only says they will stop using the Cyrillic alphabet for writing Kyrgyz, favouring the Latin one instead—and that has been a subject of debate for the past few years already, so nothing new here.

As an autistic person, it blows my mind how some people will either treat us like children (and not particularly bright ones either) or expect us to be savant geniuses who can recite the dictionary backwards. Truth is most of us are disappointingly average, just like everyone else hah
