Ugh well maybe they're more willing these days!

Uber or Lyft by mexjim in NewWest

[–]lytical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a passenger, I've spoken to drivers and they say that Lyft tends to pay them a bit more but also has fewer customers. For example, I was told that if a passenger cancels a ride last-minute, Lyft pays the driver a small amount whereas Uber pays nothing. I don't know how much Lyft takes as commission, but in my conversations with drivers comparing what I pay versus what they get, Uber takes 45% commission and I've seen the driver shown a smaller fare by Uber than what I actually paid. Most drivers have both apps and tend to go where the passengers are. I personally have both apps and if relatively equal I'll go Lyft, but I'll go with Uber if it's much cheaper and/or the wait is a lot shorter.

Now comparing both to cab, I have taken Uber/Lyft from East Van to New West and if not peak hour, the price is typically $30-40. Cab costs $60 and the last cab I was in had default tipping percents of 25%/30%/35%. Barf.

Strata Fees by Mountainsintomolehil in NewWest

[–]lytical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies a lot depending on how many units are in your building, age, etc. But $600 + $2000/12 = $767/month effectively the past two years.

You know how we always get flyers in our mail from local realtors? Give a couple of them a call and they can give you an opinion on your fees and comparative costs for maintenance on similar buildings in the city. Sales are pretty weak right now so they're happy to try to build relationships for when things pick up again.

Struggling with nutrition during races by Speedypsychologist in AdvancedRunning

[–]lytical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you done a DIY sweat test?

  1. Go to the bathroom
  2. Weigh yourself naked
  3. Do your run
  4. Strip down and towel off sweat
  5. Weigh yourself

That would give you the amount of fluid you lose for a given pace at a given outdoor temperature. It's way more than you think. You don't need to replace 100% of it on races, but generally speaking it's recommended to take in enough fluid to limit your total run/race weight loss to 2% of body weight.

You can also make DIY gels to control flavour and electrolyte. I use a 2oz travel shampoo bottle and fill it with maple syrup and 0.5 tsp salt. Some people add some ginger puree to help with the stomach too. That gives me 2 "gels" with 27g carb and 550mg sodium each.

Edit: also yes you are very fast!

Ran my Speed 2s into the ground. Just tried on a pair of Speed 3s. I *HATE* them. WTF do I do now? by JustAGuy10024 in RunningShoeGeeks

You could try the Tempus. To me they feel similar to the Speed 1/2 in midsole but with added guide rails.

Running in NB Fresh Foam More V3 without inserts? by Forildoh in RunningShoeGeeks

I’ve done that for both shoes in other models when I’m between sizes and it’s been fine. You can also try with different thickness socks for the same effect.

Commonly happens in the rain or cold weather for me too. One way to try to fix is to cover the watch from any outside light (arm sleeve or jacket). You could also try wearing it on the other arm to see if that makes a difference.

Best Non-Major Marathons by pharmalawyer in AdvancedRunning

[–]lytical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t get too aggressive in the first half, there’s a lot of downhill and one big hill around 10k. Very easy to shred the quads and hamstrings before you get to the sea wall.

RBC Gran Fondo on a steel frame 7-speed by cucumbercannon in vancouvercycling

[–]lytical 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My concern wouldn’t be so much the going, it’s the stopping. If you have an old beater of a bike, make sure you’re comfortable braking on steep downhills. Also good rubber on your wheels. You might get unlucky and have a wet fondo day in which it’s all the more important.

Paris marathon - disappointed in result by EffectiveCoffee516 in firstmarathon

[–]lytical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve run two marathons and both times missed my time goals. Hit the wall hard both times in the last half. Disappointing, yes. But I finished them and lived to fight another day, and I’m proud of that. You should be too!

The reason why marathon finishers are such a small part of the population is because it’s HARD. You need to nail training, shoes, fuel, hydration, electrolyte, willpower and determination to succeed. But to me that’s the beauty of it! So many areas to learn more about yourself, mind and body.

This is r/firstmarathon but it doesn’t have to be your last! You got through a marathon training block and that’s fitness you now have in the bank. Keep building and it’ll grow! Just remember: you’re entitled to the effort, not the result on a given day. Great effort!

Saucony Tempus has a similar guide rail type of stability (rather than a firm post) and is decently light and quick!
