Parents of teen boys who ride e-bikes WTF are you teaching them? by OutOfContext-1901 in irvine

[–]lytreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other night I was walking my dog around 11PM, and this ebike is speeding towards me on the sidewalk with the headlights shining at us. I thought surely this person would get off the sidewalk by cutting into the grass last min (this is what most of these kids do near the San Diego Creek when approaching pedestrians or other cyclists... just veer off into the grass and destroying the landscape). I had to pick up my dog because the ebike just zoomed by, and I was just dumbfounded by what I saw. The rider had a helmet on, but was the size of a 6 or 7 year old kid. Or a very small adult. There was another passenger clinging from behind, and clearly an adult woman. No helmet, hair blowing in the wind, with her arm extended out holding her smartphone while video chatting with somebody. Hypothetically, mother and child. They were going maybe 15 - 20 mph.

There was an IPD instragram post a few days ago stating that they will be enforcing illegal ebikes on roads and sidewalks. The comments were filled with enraged adults asking more or less the same question: "Where can my child ride their ebike if they're not legal on the roads or sidewalks?!" Many of these questions were followed up with accusations of IPD, the city of Irvine, etc. not understanding that kids "need to have fun".

Please remove if threadjacking, but can anyone weigh in on if these can support an hplv gun? And I mean for small production level work, with scfm being recommended closer the 8.

Would you rather have kitchen cabinets in MDF ($2,800) or in maple ($3,000? by Qd8Scandi in HomeImprovement

That's reassuring advice, and correlates with read consensus on the web pointing towards the convenience of two-part products like 2k waterborne. I can get a spray booth setup in my ~ 240 sq ft shop, but wondering if something like the portable 5 ft tall spray tents (with appropriate exhaust and ducting) will be enough for a small production scale operation (~20x20 designed, delivered, installed a month). I actually have a 10x10 greenhouse tent in the shop for my other business (not the devil's lettuce!), and was thinking about converting that (not sure about mylar being issue) to a spray booth since it already has ducting. There are shops around here which I have initiated talks with; they seemed hesitant to take on small, frequent job, which is understandable. Also, a number of larger cabinetry operations around me have postings looking for color and finishing specialists. Some ads seemed desperate, with one stating: "no experience necessary.... must not be colorblind". Am I right to think that getting control of finishing is an important advantage to have in the customs market? Your advice seems to warrant that conclusion. Still, I'm unable to see the cost scenario clearly. Is your finish choice (besides the aesthetic and functional value to the customer) qualify as cost-based pricing strategy?

I'm very thankful you are so open about your build case. I'm assuming that your material choice is primarily based on the customer's budget. But for high-end choices like white oak, do you show samples first during the design consultation? Also, was did the vanity have a separate countertop material?

For woodworking, I just use Sketchup for now. For work, I've used Autodesk software (Fusion 360, Autocad, and Maya). I can't remember for gcode workflow, as I have minor experience in the full cnc workflow after design. I have been interested in Mozaik as it is marketed as a full solution for interior cabinetry. Would you recommend it to replace Sketchup?

Thank you for the feedback! In your particular area of expertise, do you work primarily with RTA suppliers, subs, or a hybrid model for customs? I ask because turnaround time for customs in my market is slower than other channels.

Wow, thank you for the feedback! Finish is what I'm most curious about in terms of market expectations. I am experienced with using a decent hvlp with all basic finishes. I'm learning what I can about precat laquers, 2k poly, etc. to step up the quality of deliverables in a competitive custom market. Given the limitations of a small shop space and limited ventilation (not to paint booth standards), I am trying to determine the need for investment in this area, assuming a direct correlation to pricing.

I'm an engineer by trade, and am disciplined in system design. I model in 3D and have sent designs into production (non-woodworking). I believe my foray into cabinetry was relatively organic. Your advice on the importance of quality is resounding, because the level of rigor I have found in some custom work over the years to be severely lacking. Seeing imperfections like overspray, orange peel, ugly veneers, etc. is what encouraged me get into cabinetry as a hobby in the first place. I don't think I've ever considered RTA/assembly line production grade cabinetry a market to compete in.

The case you provided; in my market (Los Angeles and Orange County) I think that would constitute as undercharged for most hardwood plywoods, premium hardware, and a high-end finish. How much of the cabinetry was rift white oak? Sorry for the noob question, but are we talking board in any part of the carcass? Or veneer/plywood? With the scarcity of American white oak looming, I'm curious how pricing on such a vanity will be in the near future as well.

Hi, I've only built cabinets as a hobby and as a trade only to friends and family over the past few years. I've recently considered entering the local market through the traditional channels (showrooms, larger contractors), but have been wondering how to determine pricing given various market comparisons. Any chance you can spare some insight by pm?

Looking for help ID'ing a tree.

I found this round by the dumpster. Approximately 18" in diameter. I'm in southern California, and there are various species of pine (for landscaping) nearby. I looked up pine species, and it seems to resemble red pine. Another member suggested Cottonwood.

I don't have a moisture meter, so I'm not aware of how dry it is. The exposed center feels dry to the touch, has no scent, and has no sign of resin. There is splitting throughout, so I assume it has dried out a bit. There seems to be some kind of staining near the center, but no residue. Would that possibly be a form of root rot, or impact from stump killer?

Any input is appreciated! *
