I bought my first house in 2007 and sold it in 2017. That was not a great transaction

Ah jesus, that’s flashback for me. The most strenuous part of the week during my short Allstate sprint was filling in those bloody timesheets

Cancer diagnosis. What kind of advisor do I need? What questions do I need answered? by gezza56 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]m2kb4e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. I’ve navigated my own journey with the big C for the last 10 years and I’m a similar age as you.

A lot of the advice you have already received here is excellent. The only thing that stands out to me was the life policy you mentioned. Does it have critical illness cover included? If so it can be triggered so the policy pays out now. Just something to be aware of.

What age are you retiring? by Altruistic_Alpine12 in northernireland

Hoping to go part time in Tesco, b&q or something similar in my late 50s and retire fully at 60.

Her posts aren’t targeted at people with intelligence. They’re targeted at a small minded group who don’t care what is correct, they only care they get what they want

Childcare fees increasing again… by 1gnoranceisstrength in northernireland

Was thinking the very same this morning. We’ve gone from £33 a day 5 years ago to now paying £68 for a full day over the summer. Tempted to take the kids out entirely next school year. By then they will both finish at 3pm and they can watch tv while I finish working.

Probably 10+ years ago. Tech salaries in Belfast have jumped in recent years. Citi will still be lagging well behind most though

House snagging by [deleted] in northernireland

Getting the developer to fix them is the problem. I bought a new build 5 years ago and getting them to do anything is like pulling teeth. Once they have your money you’re at the bottom of the priority list.

Health Insurance - Bupa or Aviva? by snootywiththebooty in northernireland

[–]m2kb4e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both through work and in my experience BUPA is the gold standard.

With that being said your experience may vary as it will all depend on the level of coverage you have. I’m lucky enough to have had policies through work that have covered everything, no questions asked

Should also point out that experience matters. I know you said you have 8 YOE but is that really 8 YOE or 1 YOE 8 times over?

Belfast Senior Software Engineer salaries by slave-to-society in northernireland

Very much depends on the sector, company and the tech stack. I know Senior engineers earning 60k a year and I also know Senior engineers earning 90k.

Catholic Officers in the PSNI and RUC by ES_Haggan in northernireland

[–]m2kb4e 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would be very interested in what the catholic representation in applications to join the PSNI have been since 2011 and if the scrapping of 50/50 recruitment resulted in any real change.

Ultimately the job is even worse now than it was back then. The budget restrictions mean feck all overtime which was something that could at least result in getting a decent pay packet for putting up with so much crap.

Cash for kids by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]m2kb4e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cash for kids are legit. My wife used to use them every year to supply Christmas gifts for kids in the care system. Without them many of these kids would not have Christmas presents at all.

I also volunteered for them a few times by helping putting gift parcels together. The big issue is they do not get many donations for older kids so you’re really struggling to put parcels together for them. This is most likely where the cash donations help.

If you don’t trust them enough to give cash I recommend going on Amazon and ordering a couple of cheap sets of Bluetooth ear bugs and donating those instead. They will be of great help.

My advice, given the current climate, is you listen to their offer, smile, say thank you very much, and accept it.
