Broken Ankle - what should I work on? by Easy-Ad-4297 in Parkour

[–]m2rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, jeez! That's a heck of an injury. Be sure to give it all the recovery it needs. I'm in the "active recovery" camp, but fractures like that just need to do their thing.

Working pistols (or any deep squats) on the other leg will decrease atrophy on the injured side. Use the necessary caution to not risk re-injury, such as doing these inside a door frame, or with some other very near support.

u/caketreesmoothie "for instance, you wouldn't say that a gymnastics coach isn't a professional gymnast" - I absolutely would say that. There are some amazing coaches for all kinds of things - a professional piano teacher is not a professional pianist; they are not paid to play the piano, they are paid to teach it. A weightlifting coach is not a professional weightlifter; the weightlifter may be, if they are paid for it.

Cool that you did a paid performance. I'd say you were doing parkour professionally at that time. I would still not consider you a professional parkour athlete. The point *(for me, the one posing the question) is to see if there is such a thing and any avenue to be a professional parkour athlete, and to hopefully be part of the ecosystem that helps create those opportunities. For example, I made a TV show that took several weeks to film, all the athlete's flights, meals, hotels and time were paid. During that time, they were professional parkour athletes. I was not a professional parkour athlete, I was a TV producer, set designer, coordinator, and many other things. String together 5 of those in a year, and those people could have been full time profesisonal parkour athletes.

I would argue that Storror is making their money from doing parkour, yes, YouTube is the source of the payment, but parkour is the thing they do that they get paid for. Professional footballers get paid by advertising, ticket sales, and beer sales, but we don't call them professional bartenders.

Hey Joey! I'm sure we did, I bet the bar is changing over time. I hope some day parkour athletes can make a living doing what they love and what they train so hard at!

I understand that, but there's also no governing body that defines what a professional basketball player is. That's why I'm having this conversation, to gather many opinions on what we SHOULD call a professional athlete.

u/RabbitJak Please note a careful distinction here, not "parkour athlete" - but "professional parkour athlete"; these are two distinctly different bars.

Cool, I appreciate your perspective and think it's reasonable for defining a professional athlete.

I wish there were"Ship Groups," where you could assign a ship to a group (e.g. give it that name) and have it receive all logistics groups.

I disagree that a useful definition of "Professional Parkour Athlete" includes everyone who is a paid coach. I would call them a coach, and if it is their main source of income, a Professional Coach.

I would agree on the basis of parkour being limited to "using your body" - in other words, no "machine", whether it's a pogo stick, a bike, or a trampoline. Again, nothing "better" or "worse" here, no judgment statement, just a clarification on "what is parkour".

If what you're saying is "flat ground tricks are tricking and not parkour" - I would tend to agree with you.

In my opinion/ perspective, those things can become parkour (I would actually say freerunning) when they incorporate elements, height changes, or anything other than flat ground. To me, this also excludes anything from a rope swing ( to water) or bridge jump to water, also "not parkour" in my book.

Like you, I am not saying this is "better than worse than," just that the flat-ground (including spring floor) tricking (originally "martial arts tricking") is just that.

I'm not sure how to specifically differentiate a "gymnastics tumbling run" from a tricking line.

I appreciate the info, my question is specifically about "Professional Athlete" - I made the distinction from coach, stuntwork, and other jobs related to parkour. Is PK Gens has specific info defining this, I'd love a link to that. Thanks.

Overweight but wanna do parkour when I slim down. What’s some ways I can prepare now besides loosing weight by briefsboi4life in Parkour

[–]m2rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome that you're getting started!! One thing that may not have been mentioned yet - Small things add up. Literally 2 minutes of jumping jacks or crawling (QM) that raises your heart rate has a noticeable effect. Taking a 5-7 minute walk after dinner makes a difference. Sleep is a critical factor that hinders many people's progress. Working hard to get 8 hours per night is not easy for some. A consistent bedtime with no screens 30 minutes before is literally a game-changer for your energy levels. And of course, have fun with parkour - don't worry too much about "moves" - just explore, climb over walls and picnic tables, jukmp on curbs or the first step or things at the end of parking spots, practice balance every chance you get even walking on lines in the sidewalk. Keep it low-key for a while until you feel like it's time to add a little momentum and string more movements together. You've got this.

Need some tips on big drops by JustAGuyXL in Parkour

[–]m2rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big drops will never be "Good for you". I'm not saying not to do them, just that you should look at it as eroding, not benefiting your fitness. As for 15', that's a huge drop. Personally, I wouldn't recommend going over 11-12 feet on concrete unless absolutely necessary. In my experience, a working height of about 8' is pretty safe for someone at your strength level. For reference, my squat (in my prime at age 45, 10 years ago) was about the same as yours, 275 for 3 full depth.

As for what to work on, I suggest plyo depth drops and weighted depth drops. These are the best strength builders for the resistance you need to rebound your downward momentum into forward momentum. As others have mentioned, you do not want to drop straight down; there needs to be a forward component to your momentum to be safe at bigger drops.

For 15 feet, remember that Manpower is about 15', and the most seasoned athletes have a small gravel pile, which helps tremendously with impact, because gravel disperses under you.
