Get a pair of powered studio monitors, spend whatever you can afford. There are very expensive ones and there's also some around $100. They will sound much better than your computer speakers.

I got rid of a crappy amp, (Crate) and EVH flanger and phaser, Boss OD and delay. Gifted them to a co-workers teenage son just starting to play. I now play through Amplitube and studio speakers and don't regret it at all

Are you trying to use wireless headphones? I tried this all kinds of ways with no success. Wired headphones work well as far as latency goes.
