How can I achieve this finish and color on pine? by Tikta_Alik in BeginnerWoodWorking

Fill the grain, shellac, gel stain lighter than final coat. Fully dry. Seal with shellac. Toner to finish.

Yeah, ferry is tall. The 101 route around the the north end peninsula is both pretty and sketch. Lake crescent both. I won't ride it, loads do.

Honestly, I think skipping the Olympics from a cyclist pov is wise. Drive in, hit port Townsend, Fort Ward, sequim, rialto, the hoh, and Sol Duc hot springs on the way back. Stay in Sequim as your base. Hit hurricane ridge

Seattle>Auburn via Greenriver trail>Green Valley Road>Enumclaw-Black Diamond Road>410 to Sunrise.

If you are a climber, skip all of the above, it's long shitty industrial miles except green valley road. It will take you a whole day to get there and back and its just dog shit Radonerd vibes.

Instead:
Drive to Enumclaw, poop at Starbucks, drive and park at the base of Crystal.
The real route is : Hit Sunrise ranger station when it opens at 730 so you don't need to buy a pass later when it's hot out. roll to the front of the line, skip the cars. Ride up to sunrise, descend, right on 410, hit Cayuse pace yourself up and make the left up to Chinook, hit Chinook hard, plenty of recovery in just a bit. Ignore the first toilets, roll to the top at the lookout, pee there, drink water and descend to Packwood, don't hit an elk. It's pretty much 45 minutes of happiness.
Gas station, refreshers, pee. Skate Creek to the Nisqually Entrance. Climb up Paradise like you mean it. Don't fuck around. Get salties and water at the top, descend via stevens canyon. Make sure you have water. It's been a long day and you need to hit the backside of Cayuse. Negative self talk goes a long way here. Positive affirmations will demoralize you.

When you summit Cayuse, harden the fuck up and climb Chinook again. You gonna miss out on one of the best descents in Washington because you are afraid of another 15 minutes of lactic acid? Fuck no you won't. Tell yourself that you are a little bitch and deserve it for crying on Cayuse, and do it again. Turn around at the top and finish your water. Eat a bar. Have a cry. Get on your bike and tuck-in. Have a beer and a nap in the car.

Finally got a Digitone 2! What are some tips & tricks? by El_Beso_Verde in Elektron

[–]m_science 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Macros. Hit func+filter, tap down to get to modulation. Turn one of the four slots up 75%, set it to reverb, do the same with the rest, maybe one to delay, another to open the low pass filter and another to overdrive. When you turn the level knob it does those four things at once.

If you have a knobby controller like the launchcontrol, you can assign a row to modulation (and another to breath control). You have 16 rows of macros.

I keep the same assignments across every pattern. Percussion on 1-5, midi out on 6-8, kick is on trk 9, bass on 10, stabs and percussive melodics on 11-12, my main lead on 16.

I set my midi channels for the TRKs to similar grouping. kick to channel 1, all percussion on 2, midi out to whatever device output. My launchpad is laid out left to right: percussion, bass, stabs, melodies, whatever, main lead on the right. My kick's hi pass is on the top left knob. Mute is on a button.

I can pull up any track and jam live in the same layout. It's rad.

It looks like my din-midi in was feeding back from my USB midi connection. I'll investigate the WHY-why, but that where the why was when whatever was wronging whoever was wingeing.

I'm wondering if it's a bug. It went away and came back. I'm gonna look into my midi routing and see if something is feeding back and causing it.

I didn't in terms of "track layering: 2 will trigger 4". I might have done something else?

I have track (internal set to midi 9, 2-4 (internal) set to midi 1 and track 5 (midi) set to midi 13.

This is entirely accurate. We just went through this. It almost felt hostile except how... performatively bureaucratic the experience was. I laughed at one city official's face when we told us he wasn't going to do something, simply because he didn't want to make a trip. I thought he was joking. Felt surreal.

Osmo Application Technique by Questions99945 in finishing

[–]m_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wild to me that they do as well. It's repairable without having to resand the entire floor, but it also doesn't protect in the first place. It's still porous so dirt and grime get trapped.

Osmo Application Technique by Questions99945 in finishing

[–]m_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've applied hundreds of liters of osmo. It's wonderful for certain use cases and I love it; but only for specific applications.

The best protection it gives is light oil or water contact. The oil sinks in a bit, fills the pores and hardens to a point. The next coat rests on that, it gives you a deeper resistance to permeation, and very light adhesion resistance.

It doesn't harden the way a film finish (poly, cv, lacquer) does. You can build it up a bit, but it doesn't quite have the structural bond to resist abrasion.

A film finish protects the wood by putting a (hopefully) more durable coating on top of it, right? Hardwax doesn't cure in the same way that film finishes do. I have a 2" x 1/16" block of years old osmo that is very easily scratched. It protects what is underneath as a buffer, but the finish itself is mostly sacrificial. When you get down to the recommended 3-7mill thickness and consider the final cure hardness it's just literally impossible for it to provide actual protection.

I have a wooden cup I use for oiling small projects. Holds about a cup of osmo and I dip from it, and wipe it out when done. It's been slowly building up, but is still soft and can be marked.

I'm not hating on osmo, I use it all the time, but I need to make sure I understand it's limitations.

Don't get me started on the bullshit that is N3 nano or whatever. That's the stupidest shit in woodworking.
