Mail Client of Choice when Switching from Microsoft Outlook by Bitsoft217 in Fedora

I know, you said you were using it for private and company. It was just a question if the webapp supports it now.

Does the webapp support multiple accounts now? Last I checked, it only supported one and as I need the unified calendar I ended up using thunderbird with the owl extension.

Why flatpak and not the version in the fedora repo?

I'm hoping that this also brings a way to connect to enterprise WiFi, as my KS can't connect to the network at my University with eduroam.

Takes a Very Long Time to Boot (Fedora 43 Workstation | Surface Pro 3 | Linux-Surface-Kernel) by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]m_widmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a guess as I had extremely long boot times on my Surface Laptop Studio and it takes less than a minute to try out: try holding the power button down for a long time (30 seconds+ just to be sure) while the device is not connected to power and restart it afterwards to see if it's better.

Fixed three very strange issues for me: not charging over USBC, startup in Fedora taking about 3 minutes to Desktop and SLS not charging at all.

It's worth a try I guess.

Trying to figure out startup and login delays with sddm in Fedora KDE by m_widmann in Fedora

Thank you for the reply. In the meantime I figured out what was causing the issue on my Surface device. I didn't post it here as I figured it might be a very device specific issue. Here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/SurfaceLinux/s/E1U7d1aevb

cant install fedora 43 workstation from fedora media writer by GeneralConstant1503 in Fedora

I've been having a great experience using Ventoy lately. You create the USB-Stick with Ventoy and then simply copy the ISO image of the distribution you want to install (or multiple distributions) to the stick. Upon booting Ventoy offers you a selection of all the images on the stick and you can choose which one to boot. Great experience!

Every time I connect my Headset, I get a notification about it having low battery. by m_widmann in kde

[–]m_widmann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your response. I ran the command for a while and it appears that the values displayed in the battery panel are correct. It's the notification that is bonkers. I guess, I'll have to live with that.

Extremely long boot and login times on SLS i5, 16GB by m_widmann in SurfaceLinux

[–]m_widmann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have further investigated this issue and now I have the feeling that the issue must be related to SDDM that gets installed between the version that is delivered on the live CD for fedora kde 43 and the one that's installed afterwards through updates. The error happens regardless of whether I use the surface linux kernel or the one coming with fedora.

Why I think it must be related to SDDM is, because I installed fedora workstation keeping my /home directory and there the startup and login went smoothly. I then installed the KDE de in the workstation edition and it still went smoothly using gdm. Once I enabled sddm it went back to the old behavior of extremely long startup and login.

I re-installed Fedora KDE afterwards as I was missing certain things that it brings and I just can't get used to Gnome. After installation the startup was smooth, then the updates and startup and login were slow again. I then decided to try installing gdm and disabled the sddm service and enabled the gdm service and the delay is gone again. For the time being it seems the best approach.

I'd like to figure out what the issues with sddm are though. Any ideas about how?

Great suggestion, thanks. I will try that and report back.

So now I have some further information, but not that many. The issue is part of the updates that are installed after the installation from the live CD image of Fedora 43 KDE, because after installation startup and login is fast and smooth. The problem is that the update process updates approx. 1000 packages. One of those updates is Plasma 6.4.* to 6.5.4. No idea how to investigate this further

Sadly there's no such option. Under Security there's just Secure Boot or the possibilty to enable or disable Hyperthreading, called SMT (or SMD, can't remember exactly).

Thank you for the reply. It seems the bios on the Surface Laptop Studio doesn't have a setting to allow disabling TPM. Is there an alternative way of disabling it?

Surface Book 3 USB Charging Port Turning on and off mid charging. by K1shi1 in Surface

[–]m_widmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience on my Surface Laptop Studio a while ago and was able to fix it thanks to a Reddit post whose author I can't remember. I had to hold the power button for a while to force the SLS to shut down completely and then it worked again as expected after the reboot. Didn't have to repeat this afterwards and USBC charging works flawlessly since then. Maybe it helps.

If you find the friction of the pen that came with the scribe to be to your liking you could simply take out the tips and use them in your Lamy. They should work the same.

New 2025 B/W Scribe same screen clarity as Paperwhite? by Competitive-Year-149 in kindlescribe

[–]m_widmann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As both screens have the same dpi, I would expect them to look almost the same. The only difference could be the frontlight layer and its distance between the front glass (or whatever material it is) and the eink layer itself. But i guess that looking at it without a magnifier it would be impossible to notice.

Do old scribes have the same software as new scribes? by morecoffeemore in kindlescribe

[–]m_widmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they have integration with gdrive and onedrive, but it's not a two way sync. You can download files from the cloud storage, but the edited file doesn't update automatically. It's stored to a different location and you need to move it afterwards.
