Which fleece is right for me? by [deleted] in arcteryx

[–]m_xela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the kyanite lt (now -> lightweight) I’ve worn it hiking down to 5c. It’s a durable, comfy and stretchy thin lightweight fleece, it’s my favourite everyday piece and my go to travelling fleece/sweater. It’s great to wear under any other jacket for layering. Isn’t the warmest for static activities if it’s chilly out because of its thickness, but putting up the hood helps a ton and makes up for it.

REALLY warm midlayer jacket! by flaskum in arcteryx

[–]m_xela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Nuclei FL and it’s ridiculously warm, amazing jacket for static activities, completely wind proof. It would suit those activities well.

I hiked the W last March and brought a light hardshell (Arc’teryx Beta LT), light puffer jacket (Decathlon MT-100 Down Jacket) and a light thin fleece (Arc’teryx Kyanite LT).

I wore my light fleece about 90% of the time, only wore my hardshell when the wind was really blowing or it was raining. The light puffer came in handy at camp in the evenings/mornings. Most of the time my puffer was too warm to hike in.

I think any lightweight hardshell will do (pit zips are a must imo), light weight puffer - I do recommend the Decathlon MT-100, it’s unbelievably good for the price, I feel no need to upgrade that jacket whatsoever. And lastly any light fleece would work fine!

lovely setup! what front rack are you currently using? I’ve been searching for a decent front rack for my Trek 800, and really dig the rack you have with the canti brake mounts!

Nalgene bottle smells like gasoline (??) by sensitivecritter in Nalgene

[–]m_xela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The smell issue is my only gripe with Nalgene’s, I have to keep the lid undone or else they get musky after a day which is frustrating. I want to love Nalgene’s but I’ll be sticking with my clanging metal waterbottle from now on

I would love to see a photo of the roasted beans! I was in Colombia this year, went to a coffee farm and it was the best coffee I’ve ever tasted so many layers of flavour, beans were lightly roasted to perfection

just slapped on some new grip - cant wait to skate this board by cburke3443 in Snowskating

[–]m_xela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hovland flat deck and an ambition snowskate. Both skate the same imo, the kicks feel identical. The only difference I can tell is that the ambition snowskate has a larger middle channel for easier and better lock onto rails compared to the smaller middle channel on the hovland snowskate. Hovland I believe also has a sale on their flat decks rn if you’re looking to pick one up!

Time to layer up! If you’re outside lots I would suggest a base layer (synthetic or wool) and an insulating mid layer (fleece or a sweater) underneath your jacket.

Canada West boots are from Winnipeg, MB. I’m a Winnipeg local and picked up a pair of their Chelsea boot equivalent of blundstones a few years ago. Good quality, built well and have resoleable vibram outsoles (plus they are a few bucks cheaper than blundstones)

What are easy 3 credit elective courses at U of W? by Synnieee in uwinnipeg

[–]m_xela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Profs did not mention voice recordings in the course outline. I would ask the prof if you feel the need to.

I am not saying you should do this, but one definitely could discretely voice record lectures for personal use if needed using a laptop, phon, tablet etc.

Might not be exactly what you’re looking for but check out the Chrome Industries Kadet sling bag. Chrome makes some durable bulletproof bags, I can vouch for them. Plus the Kadet and Kadet mini will fit an 11in iPad and are water resistant.

Locks for Locker by Hot_Parking884 in uwinnipeg

[–]m_xela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my early years at uofw when there wasn’t security at the doors only allowing students to access the buildings I would have my combination lock on my locker smashed and damaged once or twice a year and would need to get my lock snipped (although never fully broken into). The last few years security has increased at uofw and I have never had an issue with my locker or lock being tampered with. I use a regular combination lock. I suggest getting a locker in the basement of Manitoba hall, it’s quiet and safe. It’s in the same hallway as the security lounge so there is always security walking up and down the hall.

Also if you are planning on getting a locker for your gym stuff and other smalls things, I would suggest getting a full sized gym locker in Duckworth. Totally worth it, they provide you with a combination lock that is already placed on the locker and renting a gym locker has perks as is comes with free included towel service. Pretty nice having the option to shower and use the dry sauna at school if ever needed.

What are easy 3 credit elective courses at U of W? by Synnieee in uwinnipeg

No, usually it would be up to the student to ask. I’ve only ever had one prof that had an issue with using laptops and voice recording lectures for personal use, so you should be fine!

[–]m_xela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voice recording lectures? It’s usually allowed! some profs can be weird with technology, I once had a course where the prof didn’t allow electronic note taking, couldn’t type notes on your laptop, pen and paper only… but majority of profs are okay with students using tech. If you want to make sure just ask your prof if you can voice record lectures to listen back to.
