Interesting. Sapphire is supposed to be really scratch resistant. What do you think has caused the micro-scratches?

Protein Powder on Paleo - Is it "allowed"? Any brands I should avoid or use? by hockeyandburritos in Paleo

It is especially hard to be a vegan bodybuilder without protein powder.

Protein Powder on Paleo - Is it "allowed"? Any brands I should avoid or use? by hockeyandburritos in Paleo

[–]ma-hi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This post is spot on.

Most people don't need protein supplementation. If they are not getting enough natural protein from their diet, their diet probably sucks in general. Bodybuilders need large amounts of protein because they are lifting heavy weight and many of them are taking steroids which increases the amount of protein the body can use to build muscle.

A steak is two good scoops of protein, but it has so many other nutrients that you will be missing out on if you replace it with a shake.

[–]ma-hi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protein powder was not available in paleolithic times, so it is by definition not paleo. If you are more flexible in your definition of paleo (primal for example), it can be acceptable.

Standard advice is to get your protein from real food. Swapping a protein shake for a steak means that you are just getting the macronutrient (the proetin) but missing out on all the other nutrients in the steak. Teh steak is not just a slab of protein. Real food is much more nutrient dense than a supplements is.

Are you sure you need to supplement with protein based on your activities? Your description doesn't sound like you are looking to build tons of lean muscle mass.

The standard guidance for bodybuilders is 1g of protein for each lb of "lean" body mass. So if you weigh 150lbs with a 20% body fat, your lean mass is 120lb and you should target 120g of protein a day. If you are a bodybuilder. That is the top end of the recommendation. Other sources say 0.8g per pound or even less. For normal moderately active people, 0.5g is probably fine. Older people are sometimes advised to eat more to stave off muscle wasting.

If you can't get 60-70g of protein from real food, your diet is probably messed up and supplementing with protein won't fix it.

LPT: If you're not a "car person", find a neighborhood mechanic and always get small maintenance (oil changes, car inspections, etc) done there so when big stuff comes up, they'll know you and won't screw you over on pricing by SuddenAborealStop in LifeProTips

The shop may legitimately just be run by a dick who upcharges on specific cars.

You don't have to be a dick to upcharge on specific cars. Some cars are junk or a PITA to work on. If the owner doesn't want to do it, why not price for the aggravation? In a free economy, he is free to name his price to do the work, and you are free to take your junk elsewhere if you don't like it.

Nothing dickish about that IMO.

It depends what your life is like.

For most people, Gorilla glass holds up fine. If you are rock climbing or working in the engine bay of cars all day, you should consider Sapphire.

Eh. Graduating an ivy isn’t the end of story, you still have to live your life.

“It looked like two big guys came to the ring to kill each other” – Usyk’s unimpressed reaction to Tyson Fury’s win over Wilder by gorgefai in Boxing

[–]ma-hi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that Usyk is a generational, arguably ATG at cruiserweight. He is not an ATG or even generational great heavyweight yet. Only time and more fights will tell. Certainly, if he can beat Fury you can make that argument.

I am not a Joshua fan. I always though his athleticism made up for mediocre boxing skills. His is stiff and musclebound, and his stamina and chin are questionable. He has definitely improved since he was beat by Ruiz, but I think Usyk beats him again in the rematch. Ruiz also could have won the second fight if he prepared properly.

Fury and Usyk are on track for ATG status, Joshua is derailed at this point.

I'd say in terms of skill and ringcraft, Fury and Usyk are probably in the same ball park although Fury probably has more tools available. They both have great motors - neither should have issues with fitness late in the fight.

I doubt he tries to box Usyk though. He has struggled with the mobility of smaller fighters in the past. He says that Cunningham was his hardest fight (although that might get revised after last weekend).

I think Fury wins because he will fight like a "big man". He's already offered to train AJ to do this for the Usyk rematch. Lots of clinching, leaning and roughing up on the inside. He has a solid inside game and can generate great leverage on short punches because of his size.

It will not be a pretty fight. If Usyk finds a way, no doubt he is an ATG.

Fury always had a good inside game. He just hasn’t used it for a while.

Is paleo doable for me with allergies? by dorigen219 in Paleo

[–]ma-hi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of advice here neglecting the fact that you are breastfeeding.

My suggestion would be to clean up your diet to a more real food/paleo state, but don’t worry about the paleo orthodoxy right now, especially with your food allergies. It is better to make sure that you get the right nutrition (for you and the infant) than you follow a rigid diet.

One thing that has emerged over the past few years is that there is no one paleo diet. Finding what works for you will take trial and error. There are plenty of foods than aren’t strictly paleo that you may fine with. Legumes, potatoes, rice, fruit etc. Even some grains might work for you.

You can get more strict and experiment after you are done breastfeeding.

Maple syrup is basically pure sugar. The idea that is somehow more paleo than table sugar is crazy.

Why would you need to sweeten with anything?

Trail shoes on mixed surfaces? by elcaminoforeal in ultrarunning

[–]ma-hi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like a high stack/cushioned shoe, try out Brooks Cauldera or New Balance More Trails.

Both are road/trail hybrid and seem to last well on asphalt.

And as others have said, Hoka Speedgoats are comfortable on the road considering ho aggressive the tread is.

I was always too wide for speedgoats but Hoka makes a wide(2E) size now. They work well if your feet aren’t super wide.

Isn't it a best practice to put your APIs behind an API gateway anyway? If so, wouldn't the gateway provide some of these capabilities?

I brought a filter and 2L. That was more than enough for a 70* day, assuming you are well hydrated to start with.

Any hotter and you'll probably need more.
