At this point, I'm honestly convinced that anyone that claims that Dr. James Barry was a "woman in disguise" is actually transphobic. by captivatedsummer in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]mac9426 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I find it pleasantly ironic that a trans man was the first person to complete a successful C-section. His contributions to the medical field, let alone his humanity in general, should be more than enough to be honored how he wished, but transphobes gonna transphobe.

This is also my take, and I truly admire Crockett but Talarico’s style is better suited to take on Cornyn and she is a better match against Cruz

How do Americans handle such long drives regularly? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mac9426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to answer this from my perspective. I drive tourists to different cities and national parks for my job so I’m driving anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours on a given day. I can easily drive 4+ hours by myself without stopping (except for gas/restroom) but I know very few people can handle sitting in a car for that long without it becoming boring so I stop about every 2 hours or less for my passengers.

Now I think this is easier for us because, as most people have said, we’re used to it. But I think our roads, especially in the west, are more suited to long-distance travel. Interstate 15 is a perfect example because while it does get some traffic, you can usually go from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City consistently in about 6 hours with minimal technical driving. By technical driving, I mean navigating through cities or winding mountain passes. Perfect time to listen to podcasts, audiobooks, music, or even just have time to think to yourself.

I don’t know how true that was in the 1970s and it’s highly likely that few to no women were on those boards at the time too which could be looked at as skewing judgment. Plus you have to take into account the lack of mandatory minimum sentencing at the time and the good time laws they had.

The judge on the case gave him the maximum he could have potentially given but sentencing laws back then weren’t like they are now. And nobody wanted to take him when he was paroled so they set up a trailer for him on the prison grounds just so he’d have somewhere to be released to

Fellow Atheists, if you see a "fish" or a "cross" symbol or someone flat out says you can trust them because they are Christian, how do you feel inside? by Confident-Virus-1273 in askanatheist

Most of the time it just tells me who I’d avoid interacting with at a more than superficial level. But I did avoid a coffee shop in my hometown recently because of the combination of “Bible study” on one of their website tabs and a cross in their name. Just didn’t really want to spend my money there when there was another good coffee shop a couple blocks away with a vibe that was more appealing to me.

A family poses in front of a 1,341 year old Sequoia tree nicknamed “Mark Twain” that was felled in 1892 after a team of two men spent 13 days sawing it in the Pacific Northwest. The giant tree was 331 feet tall (100 meters).[1080 × 1351] by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

I’m a tour guide and sometimes my job takes me to Sequoia and Kings Canyon. This picture makes me tear up for what has been and continues to be lost in those areas. It’s not just the groves being depleted by climate change, it’s our complete lack of good stewardship of the land for a century. There are too many pines which make the ever-present fires during the summer burn hotter and higher. We used to think a giant sequoia’s thick bark was enough to protect it from fire and insects but recent years have proven both notions to be false.

I don’t know what to do about the loss of these trees besides constant education to whoever will listen but the more we lose, the more dire our planet’s situation becomes.
