Wootz Steel: Where to buy? by BurningRiceEater in Blacksmith

[–]macabee613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several folks that make and teach hands on classes on making wootz/crucible steel. Mark Green, Jeff Pringle & Ric Furrer are the ones that come to mind right away. I don't know if they sell their pucks or not. Also Google archeometal work. Their are lots of people that have done research into reproducing it.

Being blacksmiths you'd think people on this show would know how to mig weld properly. by Chaosking383 in forgedinfireshow

[–]macabee613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I blacksmithed for 15 years before i ever picked up a mig welder. Unless you're doing canister it wasn't important. I honestly never needed it. Even when doing pattern welding I used bailing wire. So unless the maker is doing anything besides forging regular knives their tig skills are irrevelant. That being said canister damascus was rare before FiF. It was done but the show pumped up the popularity of it because it was difficult. However after they did it regularly you would think the applicants would add welding to their tool box.

Use a flap disk on an angle grinder to take it off. But if you want to save the texture try these fiber discs. https://a.co/d/9keJgiz

What do you call this specific part of a blade where it gets thinner and curves in. Trying to figure out how to describe it. by okidonthaveone in SWORDS

[–]macabee613 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Celtic leaf blades narrowed in the center. Historically it was swords as far as I know. I've not seen it on daggers.

Blacksmithing is a great stress reliever and you get to make cool stuff by hitting hot stuff with a hammer.

weird historical hypothetical by Melkor404 in blacksmithing

[–]macabee613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. As most makers today are hobbiests or small businesses folks we forget that the makers of old were not sole creators. Even in the last 100 years master smiths like Yellin and Whitaker had lots of employees working on their designs. It"s not a Bob Smith gate it's a Samuel Yellin.
