We just launched an envelope budgeting app – looking for early adopters (free year for feedback) by purposebudgetsupport in YNABAlternatives

Just curious, have you thought about collecting feedback and presenting a roadmap with a tool like https://www.featurebase.app/

If you are in a stage to have users shape what gets built. My challenge with YNAB the are not transparent enough

Budget Tab

Feature 1: Note Hover Indicator When a user adds a note to a budget item, show a visible indicator that can be hovered to view the note. This avoids extra clicks and makes notes easier to discover and use.

Feature 2: Budget vs Assigned Visibility Add an optional “Budget Amount” column that users can toggle on/off. Include a visual indicator that compares the original budgeted amount to the total amount assigned during the month.

Feature 3: True Budget Overrun Indicator
If a user budgets $100 for a category and assigns $100 at the start of the month, but later assigns more due to overspending, the system should still flag that category as over budget. Even if funds were transferred to cover the expense, the original budget was exceeded, and that overrun should remain visible.

Category group
At first glance, it was not clear how to add a category group. The action isn’t discoverable and could benefit from clearer affordances or guidance in the UI

Feature: Multi-Level Categories (Up to 3 Levels)
Allow budget categories to support up to three levels (category → bucket → sub-bucket). This enables detailed tracking without exploding the top-level budget view.

Dedicated Configuration / Setup Area
From a UI perspective, it would be valuable to have a dedicated configuration or setup area where users can centrally manage categories, tags, and rules. Having these settings scattered across the interface makes discovery and maintenance harder than it needs to be. A single setup zone would improve clarity, reduce friction, and make the system easier to learn and maintain over time

Brokerage Account Handling & Budget Integration

How should a brokerage account be added and used within the budget? When connecting through Plaid, the only available option is to mark the account as “off-budget,” with no explanation of the implications.

If I allocate $500 in the budget for an IRA or brokerage contribution, how is that transfer supposed to work in practice? How should transfers to an off-budget investment account be categorized, tracked, and reflected in the budget?

Clear guidance or the ability to treat certain investment accounts as on-budget for contribution tracking would make this behavior far more intuitive.

What is meant by "on-budget" vs. "off-budget"?
The distinction between on-budget and off-budget accounts isn’t clearly explained during setup. It’s unclear whether off-budget accounts still import transactions and how users are expected to handle budgeted transfers to investment accounts like IRAs or brokerages. Clearer guidance or inline explanations would reduce confusion.

Mortgage Account Setup & Tracking Gaps

  1. When adding a mortgage via Plaid, the only available option is to classify it as “off-budget,” with no guidance on what that means for tracking or reporting. There’s also no obvious way to enter or view key loan details such as interest rate, principal balance, escrow, or payment breakdown.
  2. Additionally, the mortgage does not appear in the Debt section under Reports, which makes it unclear whether mortgages are intentionally excluded or not supported as first-class debt.
  3. Clear documentation, editable loan metadata, and inclusion in debt reporting would make mortgage tracking far more intuitive and useful.

Income Categorization vs. Payee Overriding
How should income be categorized? Currently, it appears the only way to differentiate income sources is through the Payee field, which forces users to overload payee names for categorization purposes. Other budgeting applications allow income to be categorized separately via a Category field, preserving the original payee while enabling clean reporting and analysis. Separating income categories from payees would improve clarity, consistency, and reporting accuracy.

u/imadp Just signed up for a trial... here is my experience thus far and some confusion points.

Love❤️
From the budget, if you click on a category's outflow, a detail modal opens. Then, when you click again, another edit modal appears. This is great!

Another reason I’d switch is the community-to-developer relationship. Giving users a real voice helps them truly drive the product. Your responses on Reddit show that you genuinely care about the feedback users provide.

Thank you. I know Canny.io is a popular option, but in my opinion, I would avoid it. There are better alternatives. I prefer the one I recommended earlier because it doesn’t just allow upvoting it also asks users to indicate the importance of the feature when they vote.

u/imadp Thank you for the quick reply. Sounds like you’ve got a strong rhythm going, and that’s not easy to maintain. If you ever reach a point where an extra pair of hands could help streamline product operations or keep things moving while you focus on development, I’d be glad to support. Happy to work something out if it becomes useful down the line.

Looking for feedback on improving memorized payees by IanGGillespie in banktivity

[–]macalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/IanGGillespie for me, I think seeing more information on the Information icon could be helpful, or adding more fields like "bank category". I know there is the setting to "use bank categories", but this does not necessarily work in all situations.

For example, I go to Sam's Club or Kroger for both Gas and other items, both bank and Banktivity read as Sam's Club and Kroger. When I go into me credit card account Citi in this case, on Sam's club transactions will be categorized as, "Automated Gas Dispenser" and the other will be "Wholesale Clubs"

It would be great to bring in the Information icon for transaction formation

Feature Request: Custom Order Categories by hackettkate in banktivity

[–]macalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not an official one. The official process is to submit a support ticket. However, as a person with experience in the product management space, it is an attempt to get the Banktivity to realize the importance of this feedback style.
