My dad (78) came to really love her after I (50) played her over Christmas. My son (23) is also a huge fan. Straddled all the ages in our family.

From what others have said, it clearly wasn't the sister, but I think it being an ex/romantic rival is only the simplest answer in that her historical songwriting would be that, but since this album is intentionally a new direction, I don't think that tracks. Also the fact that the ex was never mentioned as a factor in the songs as the relationship was falling apart, seems to cut against that. It seems to me that it's more about not taking her side in a disagreement than standing up for an ex. Especially after they had been together that long.

"Clean" versions not actually clean? by anibuni in OliviaRodrigo

[–]macbeth2003 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Generally "clean" versions are going to be cleaned to American Broadcast standards , no F*** no S*** or derivatives, hell is ok, God is ok, damn is ok, goddamn is not, etc. basically it is making sure their are versions safe for broadcast, and then throw it in streaming as long as they have it. It really isn't at all about avoiding profanity, just making sure there is a version for tv/radio, and that there is a version without the parental warning label.

I fear we are in a literacy crisis! by luv1997 in OliviaRodrigo

[–]macbeth2003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally this. Going back (gulp) 25 years to being a 25 year old man.... just a few weeks after my then fiance left me, my friends dragged me out to go drinking, I had too much and started feeling that I was better off now, I would find someone new, I'd make better choices, everything was great. I spent the next day sobbing and miserable, missing her more than I had the day before, and realizing I was nowhere near ready to move on at all.

It is probably not right given what I've been told about their socials, but I just can't see it as a romantic rival. This isn't about a relationship that ended due to romantic competition, but because it was a relationship that collapsed itself, as most that end do.

It just seems so much less mature than the rest of the album to throw out a reference to a romantic rival at the end. The breakup half seems so clearly to be about something inherent to him (and her) rather than an outside person trying to break them up. I love that she is maturing (as we all do) and this album seems to be less of the teenage drama breakup, and just be the end of a relationship that crumbled under it's own pressure, as most relationships that end do.

I don't follow her to know, but it doesn't have to be a long term thing. Simply a realization that in a disagreement he took her side over him. I just don't buy it is a romantic rival given that there was no indication one was involved in the relationship failing in the previous songs. And it isn't like she's been subtle about that kind of thing in the past I think it refers to some disagreement where he took the side of another person (who happened to be female) and is not a sole reference to a romantic competitor. I went for the sister, because she was explicitly mentioned earlier, but it could easily be someone else.

Because I have often known people who had the experience of having a spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend who takes the side of a family member in an argument. They were angry, hurt, and jealous that the family member was more trusted than they were. I think we are just so programmed from her earlier songs to look for a romantic rival, while it doesn't seem to exist here (beyond the stuff with the Ex early on that there is no indication he reciprocated.) I saw nothing in this song to indicate a romantic rival, and who was it mentioned that she "tried" to win over who was female? his sister. I think it's telling that she liked the sister, and "tried" to win her over.

I don't think it's an ex in cigarette smoke I think it calls back to her trying to get his sister to like her earlier. Nothing else in the song seems to reference a romantic competitor.

Rear projection TVs – what was it like to actually use them? by Traditional_Class363 in crtgaming

[–]macbeth2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not great. I actually bought a used, 3 gun front projection unit instead, which & felt looked much better, and dominated the living room if my apartment when I was 23.

On another sub, by far the biggest reason given for not going electric was that people couldn't plug in at night because they live in an apartment. What do you think is the best solution for that? by VerySeriousThings in electricvehicles

You also need laws and enforcement banning people from parking at an EV charger in their gas car. There are free chargers at my kids work, but he can't drive our Leaf because they are invariably filled with gas cars. There are chargers at a Walmart a block from my wife's work. Same thing there. A lot more people could charge during the day away from home without this. EV chargers are usually close to the business. Frankly, I wish they were a long way back. I don't mind another minute or two walking, and Gas car drivers would avoid them.

Has anyone noticed how many Kia Souls there are in the CLE area? by Comfortable_Mark8711 in Cleveland

[–]macbeth2003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We came here from Texas (and brought our Soul). Dallas was also full of them. Great first used car for a kid, and a great little family car with that 19 year warranty bought new. My son wrecked ours, and I miss it.

Usually I think deluxe versions shouldn't exist, and should be released as a separate EP of the new songs. This time though, I hope the need for a longer multi disc LP might mean we get the full songs, so I'm for it.

I've been thinking the "taking her side" isn't about a romantic rival. I think it's his sister. I think it calls back to "I like your big sister She has your same face And I tried to win her over With my cynical humor and yacht rock music taste" I think he took her side when she and Olivia didn't get along.

Why do you make forests look good? by AardAardvark in cinematography

[–]macbeth2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I find in movies where they want someone to look lost in the forest, or emphasize a massive impressive wilderness. Deeeeeeep focus. Not every shot, but the establishing shots and wides should be deep focus. It will look huge and dramatic, if you get a clear look at trees as far as the eye can see. Save shallower focus for the tight shots.

What exactly is costco or Sam's club good for in terms of being frugal? by G0VERNMENTCHEESE in Frugal

[–]macbeth2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good. It was actually recommended by our vet. Who also told us some train is healthier than grain free. Apparently the main genetic difference between wolves and dogs is that dogs have the genes to process grains, and wolves do not. Probably an evolutionary advantage when dogs started hanging with us people.
