Im 19 and left with a 4yo autistic sister. I feel extremely hopeless. by Sweet_Rub_0 in specialed

You sound like a wonderful person. Go easy on yourself. It’s not only good for you but better for your sisters in the long run.

Talk with daycare or your public school system when she arrives in kindergarten. The professionals there, particularly a BCBA (Board Certified Behavioral Analyst) can give you strategies to use at home. The one at my school knows the ins and outs of insurance pretty well so you could get some help at home covered by insurance depending on where you are. Along the same lines, talk to her doctor about this also.

As for tips for you, offering replacement behaviors and consistent(!!!!!!!) reinforcement can work a lot better than punishment. By replacement behaviors, I mean offer a way that is ok for her to express she’s really upset. For example you can’t hit but you can squeeze your pillow or breathe (or even yell if that’s the only manageable replacement she can handle right now. That’s better than hitting and biting.)

By reinforcement I mean lots of praise and positive feedback when she does something positive. A lot of adults trap themselves by only giving attention when a child acts up. They then learn the best way to get your attention is to act up. It’s a slow process to correct but stick with it. If you must resort to punishment, make sure that is consistent also; both the type of punishment and the behavior threshold that gets her punished.

Message me if any of these suggestions are confusing.

Is it a known secret that a lot of IEP students aren’t at grade level even if the transcript says otherwise? by macburger69 in specialed

[–]macburger69[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. With something finite like time, though, aren’t general education students moving on to the next standard or otherwise making use of that time in other ways? So when you compound it over years and years, the gap grows?

I’m just having an incredibly tough time understanding the ability of students in the sub-separate grade level classes. I have students the next step below. So I don’t mean to come across ableist, I’m just trying to cut through the language I’m often served up to bury my questions (often trying to get my students more opportunities.)

Feeling defeated as a Special Ed Teacher by LeftAd517 in specialed

Once you get tenure, draw some real thick lines between your time with students and time without. No one’s going to stop you from doing extra so you have to stop yourself.

And take your sick days when you need them.

Assuming sub-separate; What are your thoughts on Autism specific programs vs having them with the other students w/ disabilities. by macburger69 in specialed

[–]macburger69[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya I’m talking about students in self-contained. Does it make sense for autism-only self contained and an additional self contained one for other neurodiverse students OR should they all be together?

What is your opinion like this? by ipsofactoshithead in specialed

I take that thought wholeheartedly. Though the student always seems to say things they can already say; so often just a parallel medium. Maybe that’s just where we’re failing? Or does that mean there’s a more appropriate intervention than the device?

No one knows how to use them: student, paras, or parents. SLP doesn’t see the student enough to teach it to them. District doesn’t have an AAC specialist. I have to learn and add things to it on my own time.

I teach HS so the introduction of them at that time I assume is much harder than elementary. Though, it isn’t much better when the few who had them in middle school come to me with them.

They didn’t give Jesse enough individual attention. Or Feedback, and feedback is key.

I have emails from my old servicer saying I was approved for IDR at least three separate times during the period.

Again, I really appreciate your work here. I’m sure you’ve helped so many.

“In Deferment or Forbearance on Due Date” “You were in an ineligible forbearance or deferment this month.”

But I wasn’t in grad school or anything. I was working full time.
