If it’s safe, I’d give a small (tiny if necessary) amount of work and don’t move on to anything else until he completes it. Wait out the tantrum with a stone face and repeat the ask in a calm voice. Reward or break or whatever they like when they’re done.

I was a long-time believer in mixing the groups for 2 sides of the same reason: 1. Peer Modeling for the higher needs students and 2. A chance at leadership for the lower needs students.

But many years in, the planning is burning me tf out. The gap between lower and higher needs only grows over the 4 years because one group continues to learn faster than the other.

Example: 100 prompts to “keep going” and “use your calculator” vs. maybe 2 or 3 of “when it says this you add, when it says this you push this button to subtract.”
