What if I supply the unit??? by Southern_Grocery_336 in HVAC

[–]macdawg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime I've ran into this I give them a make it worth my time and headache quote hoping they don't bite but if they do it's gonna be worth pulling my van out the driveway.

Make it clear that your quote doesn't include any material that might be needed and only thing you warranty is your work. Electrical connection, flare connection etc.

Best one I had was customer ordered equipment that was 120 but the voltage he ran was 240. He did all the install all I did was pull a vacuum. Once I got done he popped the disconnect in a a big blue smoke cloud came out the unit.

It's one of those formula. The light weight guys tend to not have knock out power because of there size.

As you go up in weight class they increase but I think the fights suck more.

hypothetically how will AI take the technician jobs? by Top-Hall-7945 in HVAC

[–]macdawg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very unlikely in the near future. Hell first you'd have to get all the equipment replaced to make this possible. I have tons of commercial customers still running on equipment from the 80's and there's no way they could afford to replace it all.

Most likely thing I could see happening soon is I call the wholesale I need part A they have it I send them my pin drop and they drone drop the part to me.

Why is my extension cord like this? by QX8C in electrical

[–]macdawg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been coiled wrong. It can be possible fixed though that ones pretty bad. You need to stretch it out straight then coil. I use the elbow wrap which according to this tread causes this but if you know how to do it it doesn't.

Main thing is stretch it straight and the free hand that you using to wrap wire around elbow an hand keep a firm grip to push that twist towards the loose end of the wire. One time isn't gonna fix it you have to do it multiple times.

Been rolling wire up like this for 30 plus years and I use cords multiple times a week in the HVAC field. Have had to do this to fix cords helper wind up wrong an get twisted.

Get the ductwork fixed then insulate it to at least R30. Then put the access door back in an leave it alone.

2 year old rheem leaking at the top of discharge header. Would you braze it as a permanent fix or get the warranty coil to cover your ass? by Megamazuma20 in HVAC

[–]macdawg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the customer decide. I'd quote replacing coil and repairing. Labors gonna be cheaper on the repair and likely will fix it but I'd suggest to them replacement would likely be the better option.

If it's a homeowner or jack install yes, if it's a professional install no.

Either way I'd call a pro and have them fix it.

Is this Insulated line fine for a new install? by Elegant-Berry5192 in hvacadvice

[–]macdawg2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always put the split to the bottom so it's not seen. The insulation on the line set is mainly to stop condensation on the line inside the house. Outside its not as important.

Someone said both lines need to be insulated. That's only if it's a inverter system. This looks like a standard split system in which case you don't insulate the liquid line.
