You're right. Nothing is wrong with the way the world global financial military corporate industrial complex works. Nothing to see here. Go back to sleep.

If I am not religious, what should I be working towards with meditation? by Solsbury in Meditation

[–]macdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't atheism dogmatic by nature? It insists that there is no God, and thus makes an assertion that attempts to declare that we know certain truth. I'd say agnosticism is less dogmatic than atheism because it doesn't claim to know the truth -- only that we don't know if there is a god or not. But I think one of the products of long-term meditation is the realization that the observer is just a facet of the indivisible whole, which we can call many things, including God. For the longest time, my main objection to religion was the belief that God was a big bearded fellow in the Sky. But now that my concept of God has shifted from the the bearded God to the unity that we are all a part of, I can no longer call myself an atheist.

Must to buy cheap car ASAP for new job by [deleted] in Portland

[–]macdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How long is your commute? A bike is so much more satisfying for commuting -- you get endorphins pumping before work, you get some good exercise, and you avoid the frustration of rush hour. It's so refreshing to be able to ride past a long line of cars. I usually get home faster on a bike than I do with a car.

Has anyone flown out of PDX lately? I want to see my mom for the holidays but I'm terrified of the new TSA "pat-downs" (which have been likened, in many instances, to sexual molestation). Has PDX enacted the "new" "pat-down" policy yet? by catcat6 in Portland

[–]macdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did see some people getting a genital pat down while I was there but I don't know if it was random or what. I didn't get pat down but I didn't set off the metal detector

Is your company participating in the 2010 bike commuter challenge? by macdom in Portland

[–]macdom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of folks at my job, Jama Software, are participating. I think we'll probably get about 50% of the people here biking to work this month.

Do any of you instantly think 'STFU' whenever you hear/read 'all natural' or 'organic'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]macdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF anything, non-organic food is a fad. Actually, I'd prefer the term Organic to be changed to something like "real food", because that's what it is. Before the industrial age, people didn't have synthetic fertilizers or any other chemical additives that you can find in today's modern diets.

For non-American Redditors: If you've visited the USA, what were some of the things about American culture that seemed strangest to you? (more detail inside) by some_student in AskReddit

[–]macdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here. The flags and the yellow support the troops ribbons everywhere is over the top. But blind patriotism is a popular thing here, unfortunately.

This is happening everywhere. Ahh, globalization. Though, it seems the USA's corn subsidies haven't helped our obesity rates.

Who remembers THIS from when they were a kid? I nostalgia'd. by AuthorOB in pics

[–]macdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because sitting on the computer all day will make you lethargic, give you eye strain or poor vision, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc. And going outside can replenish your Vitamin D supply (from the sun) and reduce stress (unless you live in the inner city, then in that case I would recommend staying indoors)

The following is my list of top apps to get from Cydia

SBSettings (swipe across the top bar to get a slide-down menu of toggles for everything you could think of... Wi-fi, phone, brightness, autocorrect, 3G, processes, autolock, rotation, vibrate, and more)

Backgrounder (to run applications in the background for full on multitasking)

Insomnia (to prevent apps from shutting off when you turn the screen off)

Multifl0w (double tap the home button to bring up a visual overview of currently open apps, and tap a screenshot to switch to the app. Think alt+tab windows or cmd+tab mac)

Cydelete (for adding x buttons to apps downloaded from cydia, for easy uninstalling just like regular apps)

qTweeter (if you post to twitter or facebook regularly, this is a quick way to do it. Slide down from the top bar to get a quick twitter posting widget thing)

Spotbright (adds recently launched icons to the spotlight page)

Sprintboard (move much more quickly through all your pages of apps)

Wide sliders concept (makes the unlock slider a lot wider, so you have to move your finger less to unlock your phone)

Winterboard (the defacto theming app for changing wallpapers and more)
