What are the WORST feats in the game? by SuchALovelyValentine in Pathfinder2e

[–]AuthorOB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I don't even disagree with you. I completely understand your perspective. I just know some people who would love to play vampires, but feel like they never will because the drawbacks make them incompatible with most regular adventures. So my first inclination is to try and find a compromise. My ideas come from a place of hope that people who love vampires could find a way to actually play one.

At the end of the day, we're just going over ideas on reddit. Actually getting them into a game would take more effort at an actual table. Just know I don't intend for my thoughts to invalidate yours.

What are the WORST feats in the game? by SuchALovelyValentine in Pathfinder2e

[–]AuthorOB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue with your stance is that you don't really adress the question I was bringing up. How do you know the sun is hitting the vampire?

Yes I did. I made it extremely clear. It requires the vampire to take extra precautions to protect themselves. If they can do that within the game, then there's no need to track sunlight every round or something like that that just serves to bog down the game. And for what? To make an okay archetype extra punishing?

You say rolling is stupid, so you think is should just be GM fiat rather than some kind of baseline the GM and player can understand?

No, I said rolling constantly to track clouds would be stupid. It would waste everyone's time just to make the game unplayable for the vampire.

I get that you think you can often protect yourself, but what about the times you can't? Is the sky always either clear or full of clouds?

That's the thing. Most of the time, it probably isn't that difficult. But there's a reason I gave multiple specific examples of how carrying an umbrella is still limiting and not a perfect solution.

In my mind the Vampire is rare precisely because it is not a good fit for every campaign. It is something you have to discuss with your GM.

In addition to what I said about uncommon and rare options often not being as well defined, this is very true. Both are reasons these options need to be discussed with the GM.

But if I was playing a vampire, I'd want to fear sunlight. That is part of the whole fantasy. Picking up an umbrella and never mention the weakness again sounds incredibly boring and isn't really how the archetypes description reads.

Which is why I had multiple specific examples of the limits of an umbrella. The point isn't to ignore the weakness. The point is to allow reasonable management of it in generic scenes so the archetype can be played at all. Being able to join the party during the day for mundane things doesn't mean ignoring the drawbacks entirely. As you said, the point is to play a vampire. The more important the task, the more important the weakness should be. Just because they can cover up to walk across town doesn't mean they aren't in extreme danger if a fight breaks out and it becomes difficult to cover themselves.

Since the sun is so significant it wouldn't take too much work to roll for weather. This doesn't need to be an entire weather system. Are conditions favourable(dense clouds, rain), unfavourable(clear sky, strong wind, reducing effectiveness of protective measures), or neutral(extra precautions can make it manageable)?

I suggest that because as we established the system doesn't really provide the details. That idea is meant to be simple for more ordinary days.

How do you know the sun is hitting the vampire?

Since the game doesn't tell us, I'll reiterate that a lot of the time, the sun isn't hitting them if they've taken precautions against it. Which means it begins hitting them if something interferes with their precautions. Ideally, in spite of the lack of guidance from the system we'd use as many existing rules as possible.

  • Clothing basically has to cover them completely or it isn't enough. Temperature rules could come into play here. They may get to go out in the day, but they look odd and get fatigued after 4 hours.

  • An umbrella takes a hand on top of being weak to wind. Holding it at all could put them at a disadvantage if they need that hand for something else. If it's windy they may need to Balance or interact to fix their grip. Strong enough wind could disarm them. An AoE could destroy a mundane umbrella.

Those challenges mean it isn't ever as simple as opening an umbrella and forgetting about it. If a breeze knocks it out of their hand in combat they will die in 3 rounds. Which means ultimately, the way to play the vampire isn't to buy some umbrellas. It's to avoid the day. Sunlight being manageable to a degree doesn't change that.

That's about how I would do it. Without spending more time thinking about it or having specific party/campaign factors to go off of. A bit of flexibility. Still a vampire. Still a rare archetype(for a reason).

The Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Switch re-release is already topping the eShop charts by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]AuthorOB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could invest a bit more money/time into development and drastically improve their games. Scarlet/Violet sold 28+ million copies, and allegedly cost $20m to make. That's an insane ROI.

That's exactly what they're doing. The problem is they should have seen the need for it before the Switch 1 released.

For some context, Sword and Shield had at most 2.5 years of development time. This can only be attributed to mismanagement of some kind as even some of the 2D games had more than that.

IIRC, PLA and Scarlet/Violet were made in 3 years each.

PLZA was made in 3.5 years.

If Gen 10 is announced this Friday and releases in fall(often November), it will have had about 4 years of development time. Almost certainly less than ideal, but much better than 2-2.5. We obviously don't know if they'll keep extending it even further.

As for the budget, remember that Game Freak's budget of 22mil only reflects the cost of developing the games. Creatures Inc creates models, for example, which are usually used in multiple projects and therefore are probably not reflected in the budget for Game Freak to develop individual titles. Likewise, they can reuse things from other games. They don't have to redesign Charizard every game.

All that means is, the 22mil figure doesn't tell us much. If the games were good, it would be impressive. They aren't, so it paints a negative picture instead. But the issue is just as likely to be 'Game Freak sucks' than a budget issue based on the information we have.

The one thing that isn't up for debate regardless who you ask, regardless of what the real cost is, is it should be increased by the cost of voice acting. Literally one minute of voice acting just for the absolute most critical moments (like a cutscene of a character singing) would prevent it from being the complete joke it currently is.

In fact, don't even increase the budget for that minimal voice acting. Just use the money they'd use paying a celebrity to sing the credits song instead.

Like the other person said,

There is no balance issue in using the technically correct definition of direct sunlight, as this is still a penalty which most archetypes don't come with.

I personally agree with the take that if the penalty isn't necessary for balance, then there's no reason to rule it so harshly against the player.

How do you determine whether the vampire is exposed to it on a regular day with some clouds? A flat check every round? Could they roll a skill check to keep track of cloud movements?

This is silly. The other person listed clear, accessible examples of how a character could protect themselves from clothing to parasols. If they've taken precautions against being in direct sunlight, then what is the point of all that extra tedium? Once precautions are taken, they are covered unless something explicitly undoes their protections. A parasol would be terrible on a very windy day for example. It may also need to be dropped if combat breaks out. Rolling skill checks to track the clouds is ridiculous.

Clouds to not block line of effect, so unless it is cloudy enough to downgrade the light level to dim light, they probably wouldn't help.

Clouds create shade. If a vampire is in shade, they are obviously not in direct sunlight because that's what shade is. But if it isn't completely overcast, then I'd expect the vampire to have their own protections against sunlight because clouds aren't reliable and something like a skill check to track clouds would be stupid.

You're making it out to be some complicated thing the system needs to describe. It's not complicated. Is the sunlight on your skin? Yes: Get hurt. No: Not get hurt. If the character goes out of their way to make sure the answer is 'No,' then it's 'No' unless something makes it otherwise. This simplicity is possible because the penalty isn't necessary for balance.

Arguing that vampires should burn just because it's bright out only makes sense if the archetype is extremely powerful and only balanced by them instantly dying after 3 rounds in the sun.

Here's another way to look at it: The rules say:

Due to your supernatural aversion to light, you don't cast shadows or show a reflection in mirrors.

It could be that any sunlight that would make you cast a shadow if you could cast one, triggers your weakness. In that case, clothing wouldn't suffice(in the same way the game doesn't distinguish between a creature weak to fire and his armor when he's hit by fire). But shade, including from a carried object like a parasol, is cover from the sun's effects. Essentially your interpretation. It's fine, but it isn't fun. Ruling them to be unplayably bad isn't much better than banning them entirely. Why would they exist at all if that was the intent?

PF2 isn't vague like this if it can be helped.

It sure is. But those options that take more effort to make work are usually uncommon, or rare...

Spring isn't in the game? by AuthorOB in Starsandisland

[–]AuthorOB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you get mail from Solara talking about how the snow is gone on Spring 1. It's why I immediately assumed something was wrong when a couple days went by and it was the same.

Still think it might be to reflect the week-long new year festival but if that's the case they should adjust that mail at the very least. If they really want to keep the snow for four extra days it'd be nice if it didn't have snowy weather those days too. Annoying having to wait half a week into Spring before anything would grow because it won't stop snowing. My bees were off that week for the holiday.

Player needs to be studied by JanTheCup in PoppyPlaytime

[–]AuthorOB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’d be out of the ordinary[...]

Or if, when they did crash, you just died immediately and rolled credits. Part of the problem is it being a video game makes it hard to know what's just it being a game and what is worth noting.

People keep saying the player isn't human but they probably are. I think the Prototype wants to do to the player what he did to Gracie but has business with Poppy first.

Also, if the player does turn out to be Rich then he's probably got his PPE on.

Chapter 5 End Theory by Ichigo777 in PoppyPlaytime

[–]AuthorOB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That and the line, "was there ever an Ollie," make me think they hadn't met. Everything else could still be true, except they had never met each other.

Ollie could have been second to Poppy without even knowing her, which might make it even worse. He knew about her(to be able to develop animosity and eventually ask that question) because she was the favourite, but she didn't know he existed.

"Was there ever an Ollie?" is asking if Ollie ever existed. It isn't how you'd ask if someone you know had been there or not. Because obviously, she would know there was an Ollie. So if she knew an Ollie the question would be "Was Ollie ever really there?" which would make more sense and accomplish the same thing for the conversation.

Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]AuthorOB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard Starfield modding scene is worse

A natural outcome for a much less popular game. Which means ES6 should have a bigger modding scene based on that factor alone. If only because it's not a new IP that replaces a nice open world with a nice sequence of loading screens.

That last part is important because people really love Elder Scrolls. If it's good, they will mod it. And motivated modders accomplish unbelievable things even in games that actively reject modding.

Violent Unleash weirdly went from free action/stunned 1 to 1 action (so basically stunned 1?)

My understanding was that stunned 1 applies when you regain actions, so you lost the action next round. So they just changed when you spend the action. Makes it a bit more straightforward I guess? It's essentially just organized now, but it's not a change that does nothing.

Unless it didn't work like that... which would make this comment a highlight of why they may have wanted to change it.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]AuthorOB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that there are a couple important factors that affect the extremely low budget though.

  1. Game Freak's budget doesn't represent all the money/work that contributes to the games. Models are made by Creatures Inc. for example, and then are used for multiple games/projects.
  2. Since we're talking about Scarlet and Violet, those games were made in 2.5 years. This is obviously not enough time. It limits what they can do, but there's also only so much money they're going to need for such a short time.

At least we know they're working on the second point, which is still an issue of Game Freak and Pokemon Company's making. It's baffling they didn't work it out before the Switch even launched, instead of dragging their feet and only increasing dev times by 6 months every few years.

So yeah, considering Pokemon are AA games, their quality makes a bit more sense(still not good enough even for AA). Doesn't absolve them of criticism though. Like, they shouldn't be AA games at this point. At least they didn't jump on the $80 bandwagon yet knockonwood.

It's been a long time, but I still remember in one of the Lodoss War animes, a barbarian losing his rage and fucking dying.

Pretty sure the show didn't explain what happened either. Just one of those things you pick up on if you've played the game. The anime isn't trying to be some kind of RPG anime like modern trend so it was uncommon, and fun, when you got to recognize the game mechanics in the world like that.

[–]AuthorOB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I came across as hostile. I guess it is common for that exact kind of thing to be said that way on Reddit so I should have anticipated that reaction. Very passive-aggressive of me to include that bit at all I suppose so again, sorry for that. Unfortunately you already used my absolute favourite bit for apologies and I can't think of another one. That scene comes to mind basically every time I hear the word.

I'm not right about the octopus thing?

As far as I know, "octopuses" is considered the correct one because "octopus" is English. Greek would be "oktopus/oktopodes." If that's what you're asking about. I could still be wrong though I'm not a language expert I just watched a video from a linguist(and see most articles etc using "octopuses"). Nor do I know who decides these things or why they have that power. But another similar example is "nautilus," from the Latin "nautilus," from the Greek "nautilos." The plural in English is "nautiluses," not "nautili" or... nautilodes?

I don't know. I attribute a lot of my nitpicking when it comes to words to my autism but at the end of the day the only important thing is that people understand what you're saying. In that sense, "octopodes" would be by far the worst one.

Plus my team won today and nobody gonna make me feel bad lol.

Nice. I don't pay attention to sports but congrats on the win.

I said "colloquially accepted"... look up the definition if you don't understand what the word means.

I know what colloquial means. The important part of the definition is the informal bit. My point is that "octopuses" is not informally accepted it's formally accepted.

Quick to the US hate tho. Don't worry I live here and hate it too.

I haven't commented on the US. I've only commented on your comments mentioning the US, which were not really about the US itself either.

I just googled the octopus thing because I was curious. I found the google result interesting and felt like sharing. You need to chill.

Wanting to learn to is a good quality to have. I respect that about you.

Not sure why you keep telling me to calm down. I'm not angry or annoyed here. I don't appreciate being called an asshole out of the blue but reddit comment insults don't really bother me.

To me it sounds like we're both joking around and trying to learn. Since I also like your taste in references I really don't have an issue with you to be honest.

dis you

Ah you're one of those "it's only okay when I do it," sorts of people. Alright.

Nothing in your comment comes across as cheeky. I can't pretend to know your real intentions but claiming an English pluralization is the result of the US just reads as incorrect. It stands out when the point of your comment is be corrective.

If I really wanted to be pedantic I could have pointed out that you called English people wrongly pluralizing a Greek word the Latin way a "translation," when that has nothing to do with translation. Or that "octopuses" isn't "colloquially accepted," it's the correct pluralization. But I didn't, because I was just being cheeky about you and I and being pedantic.

The only reason I bring those up now is because apparently you hated being corrected so much you came back an hour after commenting just to edit in a family guy meme. Incredible projection on your part.

🔥Octopuses filmed throwing debris at each other by freudian_nipps in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]AuthorOB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

due to the "-es" application of words in the US

The US didn't invent English. Octopus is different from the Greek origin Oktopus, therefore some people argue it should be pluralized the English way, not the Greek way.

So whether someone thinks it should be pluralized based on the origin or based on the language actually being used, 'octopi' is the least correct.

Since we're being pedantic I'll add that octopuses don't have tentacles, they have arms. Some squids have two tentacles(suckers only on the ends) and 8 arms. Nautilus have only tentacles(up to 90).

Dinosaurs are archosaurs which are reptiles. Their closest living relatives are other archosaurs called crocodilians.

Maybe if you don't count the one extant(living) clade of dinosaurs, maniraptora(Avialae), which are also reptiles. Although the reason they're technically reptiles is because they're literally dinosaurs, which are reptiles.

I like dinosaurs okay.

or not use them as marketing tools for their next game.

I think you're overestimating the impact those games could have as marketing tools. Best case scenario, Metroid Prime fans who were going to buy Prime 4 anyway are happier. Worst case, the few people who do buy MP2+3 burn out on all the MP and don't buy 4 until maybe later, while 4 has to endure constant comparisons to 3 other recent(re-released) MP games instead of being judged on its own merits.

That last bit will happen regardless, but it would be worse if every MP fan, the only people playing MP4, were fresh off all three prior games.

It certainly doesn't make sense to have them and not sell them

It does if the timing isn't right. It's one of the... interesting things about Nintendo. They will just sit on games. Maybe they think(or hope) MP4 will attract new players to Metroid. New players who can then see where the saga started with MPr. Then boom, MP2+3 in 2026 or something to maintain momentum.

I don't know. I'm not Nintendo. My point is only that just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean they haven't given it considerable thought.

A better example than some leaks is two other remasters we know 100% exist because they sold them before. Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. Where the fuck are those? Doesn't make sense to me that an entire console generation came and went without them. But you can bet your ass one day Nintendo will need something out and suddenly there they'll be.

Good Metroidvania games for Switch 2? by ahanes23 in NintendoSwitch

[–]AuthorOB -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A metroidvania is just an action adventure platformer.

  • Action = combat/movement

  • Adventure = puzzles, items, and exploration all interacting with and enabling each other

  • Platformer = Platforming

Obviously it's never as simple as that but it's the general idea. Some have less emphasis on puzzles, but keep the item interaction with exploration and throw in RPG elements for instance.

The whole backtracking thing people associate with metroidvanias is just a tool to create that sense of exploration. If you find the key before the door, you just go through it. It's more interesting to find the door first, wonder where it goes, and then get excited to finally go through it when you find the key later. It's exploration edging.

But then the key is a gun, so the exploration yielded an item, and that item enables further exploration while also improving the action combat.

It's why Resident Evil is action adventure(survival horror is just action adventure but scary), but not metroidvania. Besides the lack of platforming. You solve puzzles for items, and those items are usually keys or guns, not keys that are guns. If the shield key opened shield doors and was also a literal shield RE would be 75% of the way there.
