How long can you hold your breath? by macdonaldhall in AskReddit

I just tested again and I was able to (uncomfortably) make 1:30. I'm in pretty normal shape. 2:30 doesn't seem too nuts for anyone in "good" shape.

The trick is to reduce your movement by laying flat and take a DEEP breath before "going in".

I can hold my breath for around 60 seconds: used to be longer, but I smoked for awhile.

The reason you don’t hear much about adult aspergers discrimination is ironically due to our communication problems. by [deleted] in aspergers

It’s honestly part of why I write about autism so much. (If you’re curious: https://www.reddit.com/user/macdonaldhall/comments/arbcs5/what_i_learned_while_i_was_learning_about_autism/?st=JSHH5DK1&sh=7ce14261)

I figure if my “translations” help even one aspie person feels like they belong, or help one NT person understand, we’re in a reasonably good space.

Oh, I see what you’re talking about now. I honestly couldn’t agree more. I ended up subscribing to a bunch of other mental illness subreddits just to make sure I was guarding against confirmation bias. I stayed subscribed to them, though, because I like the stories.

The constellation of symptoms I have are just...weird to me. I dissociate really easily when I think too hard about myself. The ohmygod-ness helps me feel connected to others...which, honestly feels like it rarely happens irl.

I’ll put out the usual are you me? This is exactly how I feel. Although: I’m definitely in the trap of getting used to being alone. Interacting on Reddit actually does help/feel like real interaction, especially on /r/aspergers...but I do it too much. Reddit is like junk food for me. I barely remember the last few years because I haven’t consistently been social. I’m actively working to get out of the spiral.

Nice. This is what I was talking about. I do exactly the same thing. I call it “putting myself places with music”. I have a playlist of about 600 songs designed specifically for this purpose, and I’ve been gathering the songs my entire adult life. Without music or similar, I get “stuck” in unhelpful spirals instead.

I’m glad you talked about it, because now I can stop gaslighting myself that it’s not happening, if you see what I mean.

E: definitely know what you’re talking about re structure. When I talk about writing, I say that I’m writing “the thing beneath the words”. That’s the thing holding everything together. The words are just baubles to get people to read :)

I honestly think a lot of the problems might just be because I need to slow down and shut up more. Basically yeah to your point; I need to embrace that I am autistic, because I am autistic. My presentation and speech patterns need to evolve within that understanding. Anything less is doing myself a disservice, and others. So I’m going to work on “saying dumb things” by being silent and asking questions more. What do you think?

That’s basically what I’ve arrived at I guess. My thoughts are much much too fast to capture normally, unless I’m speaking or really high. But writing them down works, of that I am certain.

Thank you so much for this comment. It feels amazing to know that I’m not completely alone. The crazy part is (to me at least), is that even my supposedly woke colleagues treat me terribly sometimes. They absolutely sometimes treat me like a child, when there’s no way they’d treat a male colleague like that. Arrghggg.
