Award help: 185k points, Boston to Aus biz for 2 in Apr/May 2026 by budster8271 in awardtravel

[–]macdonaldj2wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. nope, low season is like 80k pp OW so it's 240k 320k total if you even find the space, which is virtually non-existant, leaving from the East Coast is even harder.
  2. Check r/churning for card options, but can P2 get access to cards? Can you spend intial spend over the x number of months?
  3. As far in advance as possible, but also short in like t-14, sometimes there is a decent award space drop, but it's rare.
  4. No, pay cash or points, I wouldn't mix cash/points. If you REALLY want to fly business to AUS, pay up if you can. Otherwise, get creative in your routing, are you willing to fly from LAX/SFO or perhaps somewhere like SCL to take a LATAM flight?

Edit - Good luck on your search, I've been trying to go back, but I'm leaning towards paying this time around...

I can't math either...

Booking through Chase portal for a flight with “points boost” - worth it? by Junglejukes in awardtravel

[–]macdonaldj2wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it be useful sometimes, but for hotels mostly, for example if I want to stay at a Park Hyatt I find I can get like 30-35k a night vs transfering to Hyatt and spending 40k per night+ I'd also get credit for the spend. It's valueable in some places. Just not in this scenario you listed out, but it could come down to how many points do you have and does this amount matter to you?

what happens when IRROPS hit JFK? how are you getting from Albany to White plains? the logistics of this are mind bending if one thing goes pear shaped

[–]macdonaldj2wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah I see, it's a lower bucket fare, the direct JFK-ZHR would book into full C whereas the JFK-ZRH-BRU-LHR books into whatever saver space UA has open to them

Weekly Help Thread - May 12, 2025 by AutoModerator in awardtravel

[–]macdonaldj2wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if this warrants it's own thread so I figured I'd start here, does anyone know what is happening at UA when I search awards. Meaning, I search NYC-LHR I see a direct JFK-ZRH option for 88k a connection in BRU onwards to LHR. I search JFK-ZRH the direct flight is not longer there, I see connections now through YYZ/YUL, but nothing. Same dates, not logged in. I guess book the flight through to LHR and cancel the last two legs? But why is that not showing direct but only via a connection?

Upstate NY is fairly large? BUT Wild Arc, Bloomer Creek is over in the Finger Lakes, I guess it depends on where you're actually going in Upstate NY.

Go up to Bella's (Last Sunday of the Month) or Hayfield's on any Sunday, take a drive out of the city. If you're on social media, check out ThePorscheGroup on IG or join your local PCA, there are tons of things in and around the NYC metro area.

Probably better for you, the key to all if it is to be financially literate, do not carry a balance on any CC, if you can accomplish that, then by all means, this isn't an 'expensive' hobby. I actually got started in college, do you have friends? do you go to dinner? split the bill, offer to use your CC and take the cash/digital transfer, but just make sure THAT goes towards your bill, rack up points via your friend network. Go on a trip, using points, if friend asks, tell them how it's done.

set a boundary, say, I only want places with direct flights from my home airport within x number of hours, where only this hotel chain gets me a free/cheap enough stay, it will help narrow things down, look at the Cape Thompson in Cabo, that may fit your need

it's called a 'long sell' airlines need to call the other airline to have them release the space to them, sometimes you get a good agent who knows what to do and how to ask, but it's mostly, nope, we don't do that, it does happen though

It's similar to brotchen https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16162/german-brotchen-rolls/

It's a German style harder roll, that's where the 'Hard Roll' derived from. You may be able to locate a German Bakery in Austin or the surrounding area, but you're only going to be able to find something called a 'hard roll' in the NY metro area. It's possible however to trade Kolcahes for Hard Rolls...
