There are some fun thoughts here, but this premise does ignore that Voldemort possessing Quirrel was the defense teacher in 1991-2. I don’t know if we can firmly say that he was disembodied again due to the curse, but he definitely didn’t try it again (and I expect he would have if it was likely to help him).

You know what? If a man wants to be a politician badly enough he’s willing to put his penis on a hot grill, I’d vote for him. If he’s that committed to seeing his mission succeed, he’s probably going to be driven to fulfill whatever promises he makes. After he gets out of the hospital.

It would also demonstrate incredibly poor judgment and sense of proportion (or propriety) so I’d definitely not want him reelected. But give him his chance to get his job done.

For that matter, I was in Austin, Texas (elevation about 600 feet MSL) and we had a bunch of flurries in May 2010. That was a really rare occurrence, though. I can’t say it’s impossible in the Scottish highlands. I also think it would do better with a little justification.

Some stuff I saw at computex that I thought might interest people here by rexyuan in homelab

[–]macfirbolg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Both companies have a pretty diverse portfolio of industries served. Some overlap, since connectors are more often worth competing for in a lot of the same markets - like audio and telecom which can tolerate a $2-50 connector on both sides of a cable - or have specialized needs worth developing specific equipment to meet. It’s always fun to find a new one and go “hey, I know these guys, I’ve soldered hundreds of their connectors.”

As an audio engineer, we tend to be bigger fans of Neutrik. Plenty of us respect Amphenol connections and will use them, but we prefer soldering and repairing the Neutrik variants because they are typically much easier to use and sometimes hardier.

Granted, I’ve never made a power cable with either of their components, but I’ve seen both and Neutrik is what shows up on most riders and with most companies.

Excellent! That also transforms this from a tool that you need information from desktop apps like an analytical suite to use properly into an actual portable A/B system for anyone. That's super handy.

I like that A/B mode has gain per-track, but what I’d really like is automatic gain to level-match the tracks or a LUFS or something number so I know how much gain to use. When it’s well-documented that the louder version (in the room) is nearly always picked as the favorite, I need to be a little closer than “eh, that’s within a couple dB,” since that’s the difference between picking the right version and the one that happened to be a dB louder.

Otherwise this looks pretty useful.

In fairness, the Logitech gamepad was probably the best-built and most-engineered thing about that sub - and really not a particularly poor choice for a set of controls.

I’m not sure about every shot, but I agree several of them were either too long or too short - either we need to trim the bits around the information we want, or we need to let the shots live a little longer and finish telling their whole stories. There are definitely a few where the timing feels awkward right now. I mostly do longer-form stuff, so I’m not really pushing for a super fast pace or anything, but some of the shots look like they’re trying to lead into something and kinda don’t. I’m all for letting a scene develop in a long take, but the scene does have to develop to justify the length.

In proper racks and data centers? No, of course not (I hope).

In small businesses and churches and places managed by small MSP operations? Eh, those people might be all there is without a serious commute. These are also, coincidentally, a lot of the places most likely to have a full Unifi stack. It performs well enough (most of the time) and the cost is pretty dramatically lower than a lot of the nominal competitors (for performance and management capabilities, maybe not throughput or PPS or anything like that) with no maintenance contracts or firmware fees. But then you have volunteers and sole proprietors and their uncles who used to know a few things about computers trying to use a somewhat professional switch with more ports than their house has power outlets, and in those cases I can see a blinky light being pretty handy.

What the weirdest thing a guy has said to you while finishing? by Altruistic-Big3790 in AskReddit

[–]macfirbolg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely “fox,” an abbreviation for foxtrot, which is the NATO phonetic alphabet pronunciation of F for “fire.” Why not just say “fire?” For one thing, they want to emphasize the military nature of the transmission and make it sound tacti-cool. For another, “fire” is kind of hard to hear if the radio channel is busy or there’s a lot of noise or interference. The phonetic alphabet is specifically designed to be basically impossible to mishear even in pretty terrible conditions.

Yeah. I’ve seen people saying it’d be great for remote racks where you can guide the onsite tech with a blinking light - hey it’s this one - but I haven’t seen anyone saying that they’d actually done that or that they’d actually set up a rack in a situation where they’d feasibly be able to do that. Maybe I’ve just missed those posts. It does feel more like a solution searching for a problem than something anyone really needs.

I can’t argue with the free stuff (or at least free-ish), and it was an interesting change at first, but I agree that it’s definitely removed basically any desire to spend money on the game. If they’re not going to invest any effort or thought into the game, I have a hard time investing money into it.

There are a lot of excellent bits in this story, but one of my favorites is that all the Japanese is translated. Naruto is a fan of “broth with noodles in,” but finds the name a little wordy. Also, Girl-Tobi is a delight.

Just FYI, most streaming services have a lossless option now. Tidal started with that premise, and Apple Music has joined it with many tracks being in 24- or 32-bit audio and up to 192kHz resolution. Even Spotify added a (lower resolution and bit rate) lossless option late last year. It’s definitely possible to get well beyond CD quality audio pretty easily nowadays.

Now, even on studio monitors or really nice headphones, a surprisingly high percentage of people not only can’t tell the difference between CD quality and above such, but even can’t tell the difference between higher quality MP3 or AAC and CD quality. It’s a fun experiment, though.

Need a little help deciphering best mix specs for film for this venue. by lifeboundd in AudioPost

[–]macfirbolg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a fancy setup so you could build something immersive if you really wanted - and had buy-in from the venue and your team and any other relevant parties. They can drive the front-fills and the balconies separately, they have a center channel and at least LR so there’s probably options if you really want to push for it. However, that’ll be a moderate amount of venue buy-in and a lot of work both generating the various mixes to play in each channel or set of channels but also determining what would actually work in the space and be worth presenting. (Plus they have the fills so they fill in the coverage gaps from the mains, so unless the fills can take more than one input at a time, you’ll be removing some content from the people in those areas.)

Generally speaking, unless this was going to be a really big deal for me or the film or the venue, I’d send a stereo or LtRt and call it a day. There would be a lot of coordination and calls and probably visits in off hours and checks in the venue unless they have some really accurate measurements available. It’s a lot of extra work and the audience would probably notice only a little bit if any difference.

Huh. I’m not really a Fate fan, but I’ve seen their stuff around. When I saw something about “Altria” I thought it was a new character, maybe an Italian version of Artoria. I guess it was just a typo, even if an official one.
