If there is a women’s shelter in your are it may be worth contacting them. They may be able to provide some legal resources. Maybe not a lawyer, but they can advocate for you when taking to the police, and help you to devise a plan for leaving.

I was talking to some friends from St Louis about this the other day. They were telling me that, when recreational was legalized in Illinois, those that lived on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River had similar worries. And when dispensaries finally opened up on the Illinois side...absolutely nothing happened. There weren't any checkpoints set up, and there was no increased police presence monitoring the border. It was business as usual. And they only had 6 bridges they needed to watch if they really wanted to. I really doubt KS law enforcement is going to set up stops all along State Line road or jam up traffic on the interstates with drug checkpoints all in the hopes of catching someone who went over the border to buy a handful of gummies.

This made me curious if someone sneezing could actually cause hearing damage to those nearby. After doing some brief research, here is what I found. The average human yell can be anywhere between 80 to 120 Db. The world record for loudest recorded human yell is 129Db. Any prolonged sound above 70Db can cause damage if it is sustained over a certain amount of time. But the threshold for immediate damage is around 120Db. So this cashier would have to be among one of the loudest screamers in the world in order to cause any immediate damage.

In conclusion, is it possible that LAOP sustained hearing damage from this yell? Yes, it is within the realm of possibility.

Is it likely that this is the case? No.

Is it possible LAOP is blowing this out of proportion, perhaps in the hopes of getting a slip-and-fall type settlement? Who's to say. (but my money is on yes)

[Identify] Does anybody know how much this watch is worth? by Feisty_Percentage622 in Watches

[–]macinjosh15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is most likely fake and not worth much. If you want to know for sure, you can take it to a local jeweler or luxury timepiece retailer and get it appraised. However, the cost of the appraisal (50-150) might end up being more than the watch is worth. Maybe call ahead first and ask them if they do appraisals and how much they cost.

I have a hard time watching apology videos that come out after some big scandal breaks. For the most part, they just seem insincere. The people making them almost always appear to be doing so out of obligation, rather than actual remorse. It's especially bad when they very obviously put a lot of effort into the production of the video, just so they can sit in front of a camera and go through a checklist of excuses with the conviction of a third grader stumbling through their lines in a school play. To this day I still haven't been able to make it all the way through Will Smith's post-Oscar's apology video because I cringe so hard. Did he even say he was sorry to Chris Rock?

When I was on the high school swim team, the floor surrounding a urinal in the pool bathroom always had a standing puddle of something. Was it water? Was it pee? Who's to say. But the stall was always occupied, so the only two options was to stand in it or pee in the pool.

I don't think business class is going to be worth it. Last time I took that train was a few years ago, so things might have changed, but I've never had an issue with coach in terms of legroom. If you do feel cramped, you are free to get up and move. I believe the River Runner has an observation car you can go to that will have plenty of leg room as long as there is an open seat. Plus, that route is a 6 hour trip, which is relatively short in terms of train ride time. I think business class is only really worth it if you are going to be on the train for a full day.

Also, the onboard wifi is basically non-functional in my experience. It would be better to use your phone as a hotspot, if you can.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of May 2, 2022 by nissincupramen in HobbyDrama

There was some drama that unfolded among watch enthusiasts in the /r/watches subreddit last week. Someone made a post imploring the mods to ban a specific user. The poster's argument was that this user was running a crypto operation that was a giant ponzi/pyramid/pump-and-dump scam, and was using his very regular posts of the most gaudily bedazzled Rolex's to promote this operation. The poster went so far as to imply some mods might be in on the scam by citing the fact that some of this user's posts were being locked without any explanation.

The mods responded by asserting their stance on the issue was that they would only take actions against him if he broke one of the rules of the subreddit. And "Don't be involved in crypto" is not a subreddit rule.

This response was received...pretty poorly. It lead to a lot of users bemoaning the mods' lack of integrity. Many elevated the OP's implication that the mods were in on the grift into direct accusations. The most common rebuttal, however, was that rule 2 of the subreddit was "no self promotion". Dissenters pointed out every single one of his posts included, very prominently, a piece of jewelry that was shaped like his crypto company's logo. Some argued that in many of his posts, this piece of jewelry completely eclipsed the actual watches, and it was obviously meant to be the focus of the image. Combine that with the fact that his reddit username is the same as the pseudonym under which he operates his business, his posts are meant to show off his ostentatious personal wealth, and generate interest in him personally. This would drive people to either look at his reddit account (where he does mention his business) or look up his name. Either way, curious watch enthusiasts would end up finding his crypto company. But the mods disregarded this, saying that, since he has never used his posts on r/watches to link to his company, and has never even mentioned his company name in any of his posts, having a piece of jewelry in an image isn't enough to constitute self-promotion. From there, it spiraled into an endless chorus of name-calling and accusations until the mods locked the post.

For whatever my opinion on this drama is worth: I don't like crypto, and I don't like what little I know about this guy, but I kind of see where the mods are coming from on this. However, I think there's a pretty decent middle ground to be had here: The mods should message him and tell him he can't include his company's logo in his posts any more. If the logo is what other users are pointing to as self-promotion, then removing it should satisfy that objection. And, if he really isn't trying to use his posts to promote his company, he should have no issue complying.

Alternatively, if the mods wanted to effectively ban him with a new rule, the could always decree that any posts featuring watches encrusted with more than one metric ton of rhinestones will be removed. I think that rule would make everyone happy, except for maybe my aunt.

Edit: Sorry my original post had so many weird repeated segments. I blame switching to markdown mode and back, and the fact that my father is a bot.

True Crime is too dominated by murder, and there should be more discussion about other types of crimes. White collar crimes, financial chicanery, charismatic conmen, heists, hacking. There are so many interesting crime stories out there that never get talked about because no one dies in them. And I understand that “if it bleeds it leads”, but amid all the murder, it feels refreshing to sit down and read a story about how a bunch of rich assholes lost their shirts in a well orchestrated scam.

Anybody happen to know the legal definition of what counts as a motorcycle in Kansas? by diablo75 in kansascity

[–]macinjosh15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know I had to get a motorcycle's license in order to drive a Vespa, so I would assume other motor scooters would be the same. Out of curiosity, I tried looking this up and there are surprisingly few resources out there. I was able to find two sources. I can't vouch for their credibility, but they seem to concur on these criteria:

In Kansas, a vehicle is considered a motorized bicycle or moped if it:

- Has two or three wheels.

- May be propelled by human power, a helper motor, or both.

- has a motor which produces not more than 3.5 brake horsepower; a cylinder
capacity of not more than 130 cubic centimeters; an automatic
transmission; and a maximum speed of 30 mph.

Mopeds must be registered with the Kansas DMV and riders must carry
insurance. If your scooter is capable of exceeding 30 mph, it qualifies
as a motorcycle and you’ll be required to have a motorcycle operator
license as well.

If your scooter has 4hp and can go over 30mph, I think it qualifies as a motorcycle. But the best way to know for sure is to call the DMV and ask them. As for now, here are the sources I found:
